Somewhere between half a million and a million-and-a-half people protested Spain's imminent law allowing homosexuals to marry and adopt. Surprising that this law is passing in such a heavily Catholic country as this.
I love the comments by the people protesting. If only the anti-gay folks here were so...accomodating.
"Marriage can only be between man and a woman," said Agustin Cruz, 41. "It's a divine and natural law. Marriage of homosexuals is a lie. You have to call things by their name. The first lie begins when you start calling queers 'gays.' They're queers, it's not an insult, it's the definition of that race of people."
Cynthia Janak, line two. Apparently, the Spanish have a different dictionary than she does. And who here knew that we were our own "race"?
Fr. Jose Ramon Velasco said, "And they shouldn't have the right to adopt because if those children turn out to be homosexual, who will be to blame, the government?"
Hm, interesting. Who's to blame when the children of heterosexuals turn out the be homosexual?
Velasco compared the bill to the beginnings of Nazi Germany in the 1930s.
"Back then the majority of people also backed Hitler just like the majority back this law," he said. "I'm serious, give it time and it will destroy the moral fiber of Spain and the West."
Hey, looks like Rush Limbaugh was WAY ahead of the curve with that "Femi-Nazi" stuff. Happy Kristallnacht, everyone!

Actually, a better comparison, keeping within the same decade, would be to pre-Franco Spain of the mid-Thirties, when many Spaniards felt that the left was going way too far way too fast. That's why the Republicans during the Civil War were often labeled "reds." Of course, it didn't help that Stalin was at first supporting them - and then systematically executing them from afar.

What a disgustingly offensive thing to say! This is the same Spain that expelled the Jews and the Moslems in 1492, and launched a “Holy” Inquisition in the same year. How dare you speak of Spanish Catholicism as if it were so “moral!” The Spanish Church should be repenting, not throwing stones!

Tres Gai - so nice to see that you created a profile specifically to respond to the prior message. I particularly love your location - "USA". Well that really narrows it down.
And your profile seems to indicate that you have NO sports interests whatsoever. How amazing that you found Outsports!
I really suspect that you are either:
(a) Someone posting under a pseudonym
(

A European lurker of some sort, who has never posted before

Well, Tres Gai's profile was created
February 2, 2005. But interestingly, the only interest listed is SEX. Someone is either uncreative or extremely boring after about 5 minutes. I think you're probably right about him/her being a lurker...

Wow, I guess the stereotype has some basis in fact, then.
What would happen if you put three gay guys on a desert island?
Two would get together to talk about the other one.

I'm not so sure what the previous three posts have to do with the original title of the thread, but I suppose the diversion is due in part to the apparent use of irony in the thread title.
Actually Spain's rapidly evolving progressive attitude toward gays is probably directly related to the recentness of the experience with authoritarianism under Franco. A similar revolution in attitude and morals may hopefully appear here after the Bush regime goes.

what could your point possibly be--do you think that the post is offensive or untrue
or did you just want to stretch your claws into a new poster

Hey, wait, we have to DECLARE we like sex in our profiles? I thought that was a given. I'm off to update my profile, post haste! No wonder no one has never responded to my profile! And to think I was starting to develop a complex!
