Vancouver Sun: QUOTE
Searle confirmed the Surrey RCMP detachment issued the arrest warrant for Smith on a charge that between Nov. 23, 2003 and May 18, 2005 at or near Surrey and Richmond he committed aggravated sexual assault. The name of the alleged victim was withheld.
\"He was charged with one count of aggravated sexual assault,'' Searle said, noting aggravated assault \"is the highest level of assault just short of death. So for a sexual assault to be aggravated in nature it would have to be extremely serious.''
The charge stems from an investigation into a complaint the Surrey RCMP received a few months ago from a woman alleging she was the victim of a sexual assault.
Under the Criminal Code, everyone commits an aggravated sexual assault, who, in committing a sexual assault wounds, maims, disfigures or endangers the life of the complainant.
It's just as well the Saskatchewan Roughriders have a 'bye' in the CFL schedule this weekend, so as not to distract the team anymore than they already are. Regina is a small city and the Roughriders are its only pro sports team, so I'm sure they are under the microscope with the local media. I'll be watching the Calgary-Winnipeg game this afternoon, and will keep my ears open for any commentary on the case before the game or at half-time.
