Bush Proposes Internet Monitoring SystemFrom the article, by John Markoff and John Schwartz:
"The Bush administration is planning to propose requiring Internet service providers to help build a centralized system to enable broad monitoring of the Internet and, potentially, surveillance of its users."
"The proposal is part of a final version of a report, "The National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace," set for release early next year, according to several people who have been briefed on the report. It is a component of the effort to increase national security after the Sept. 11 attacks."

Brought to you by the party of less government.
I wonder which washed up, recycled republican crook they can get to head up this project.

I agree. To the conservatives on this board, how do you all feel, either way, about the increasing encroachment by the administration--and particularly the Justice Department under John Ashcroft--on American's privacy rights and civil liberties? Or, to frame it another way, about the increasing reach of big government? Is opposition to this only to be left only to liberals and libertarians? I mean, all this wiretapping and monitoring and processing for the TIA is going to be sucking up tax dollars like a Black hole.

It is very interesting to watch the continuing stream of policies come out of the White House. There is definitely a bit of detachment here. Sooner or later, despite so many allowing themselves to be herded along like sheep, people are going to get sick of the whole "give an inch, take a mile" mentality. There will come a day when people have had enough and it is not going to be pretty for the current administration. Perhaps they could spend less time and effort justifying their oncoming dethronement of Saddam, and figure out what the people of this country really would like for them to do. Like address the economic issues, be more discriminating about reducing civil liberties and privacy, and try to be a little bipartisan. Of course, those principles may be a little too complex for those currently in the position to make decisions for the rest of us.

. . . wishful thinking.
