Debate on Gun Rights In House Turns Racial
QUOTE
Yesterday's debate suddenly veered from guns to race when Rep. Barbara Cubin criticized a failed Democratic amendment that would have banned gun sales to drug addicts or people in drug treatment. After noting that her sons, ages 25 and 30, \"are blond-haired and blue-eyed,\" she said: \"One amendment today said we could not sell guns to anybody under drug treatment. So does that mean that if you go into a black community you can't sell any guns to any black person?\"
I don't think this wouldn't be such a big deal if it was just the opinion of one loony Congresswoman (see Cynthia McKinney). Many Democrats and a few Republicans called for Cubin to withdraw the remarks and apologize. But not only did Cubin refuse, but the House, along strict party lines, voted not to have her remarks "taken down" as offensive.Personally, I'm surprised this isn't getting more attention. And it further shows how ridiculous the GOP's claim of being "inclusive" really is.
