Full Version: Asians decry Adidas shoe as misstep

That's the delicate way the WaPo puts it. Why on earth in 2006 would Adidas think this was appropriate? Do they think that racist stereotypes and imagery are fine in the 21st century, even if a person of the race or ethnicity being caricatured creates them? Do they really want to turn off so many current and potential consumers? This may be dismissed as the usual PC, but images of this kind have a very bad history and don't exist in vacuums. And don't need to be on sneakers, T-shirts or anything else.

QUOTE
A new, limited-edition shoe from Adidas-Salomon AG, part of the \"Yellow Series\" and decorated with the face of a character who has buck teeth, a bowl haircut and slanted eyes, has provoked a heated debate about the lines dividing racism, art and commerce.

The character on the shoe is the creation of a San Francisco graffiti artist, Barry McGee, who is half Chinese. McGee, who calls the character Ray Fong after an uncle who died, said the image is based on how the artist looked as an 8-year-old.

\"You have to look at it as a piece of artwork,\" said McGee, 40, who used Ray Fong as a graffiti tag in the late 1990s and later in art installations and catalogue covers. \"The way we put it all together, it becomes a collectible as art.\"

The shoe was released April 1, with 1,000 pairs on sale at a dozen boutiques in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Tokyo, Hamburg and Denmark. It retails for $250 and comes with a graffiti art fanzine.

Since then, several blogs and message boards have been consumed with fervid debate over the shoe, and Asian American organizations have said it evokes damaging and long-standing stereotypes.

Yes, I'd call it at least the usual PC, which is becoming even more tiresome because it IS so usual. Apparently the delicate sensitivities of the WaPo - Arise, Sons of Italy! Avenge the Unintended Slur! - prevented the image from being shown on the shoe - this sounds even more ridiculous as I type this, like the image of the BVM on a freeway underpass - so others might judge for themelves instead of having a couple of academics tell them what to think, or worse, providing some sales and demographic info about who's buying how many of the shoes and where, so we might have some objective evidence of its acceptance or rejection. But since that's reality, that probably misses the point.

The remark that it is based on how the artist looked when he was eight sounds like BS to me. Pure Asians don't really look like stereotypical caricatures. Half Asians even less so. My nephews don't look Chinese at all.

I don't know what the artist looks like, so I don't know. It just seemed like a weird and desparate comment.

You know, if they actually would have done that, I think they would have realized this was a bad idea.

Yeah, why aren't we allowed to see the offensive image? Is a cartoon Asian akin to a cartoon Mohammed? Will Asians of the world riot in the streets over the offensive shoes?

To say "Asians decry Adidas shoe..." is a bit of an exaggeration. I certainly haven't heard of any of this and I live in a city (Toronto) with one of the largest Asian populations in North America. We need to pick our fights, and this one just isn't worth it.

canmark, I agree but in in all fairness they should have known better.

Well, I finally saw a pic of the "offensive" shoe (courtesy of a BBC article). To me, the image kinda looks like Ren (or is it Stimpy?). As a limited edition model, I think it's kind of cool. I'd buy it (but not at $250). Alas, apparently it is not available in Canada.

Wow, all that commmotion over that? I can't even tell what it is, let alone its ethnicity. Worry not, I will not be sporting these shoes any time soon. I'll wait until they end up in the clearance bin at Wal-Mart.

What a joke!

They're making an uproar over this... just plain silly.

Well, I think its pretty bad. Nothing to go all Danish cartoonist over, but seriously, if I were him, I'd be embarassed.
