QUOTE

When Carlson countered that conservatives, \"are always arguing against 'special rights' for gays,\" Falwell said that equal access to housing and employment are basic rights, not special rights.

\"Civil rights for all Americans, black, white, red, yellow, the rich, poor, young, old, gay, straight, et cetera, is not a liberal or conservative value,\" Falwell went on to say. \"It's an American value that I would think that we pretty much all agree on.\"

yes. hell has frozen over and if George Jefferson were here he'd be doing his "gravity test"

Is this for real? I really can't see him saying this.

It's true, I saw the show. The only reason he was saying this is because he's supporting Roberts's SCOTUS nomination, and now he's stuck with the fact that Roberts's did pro-bono work for the pro-gay side of a case.

This isn't the first time Falwell has changed positions where they have conflicted with the goals of the Bush administration. Although you would think it would deeply clash with his beliefs, he supported W's stem cell research plan.

I'm a bleeding heart lib, but it's news to me that the repubs are against me owning a house or renting an apartment or having a job. For example: my pops is a repub. But he'd much rather have me renting a place in Houston than living in his home in Fla.

Now I'm sure that if Carlson had asked the Reverend about gay marriage, he would have said that marriage isn't a civil right. But come on fellas. Not all Repubs hate us.

Call me when the Cubs win the World Series. Only THEN will Hell have frozen over.

Wow, Falwell defending civil rights, send out his ACLU card now.

You know, I don't see this man as much of a religous leader, but he is a politician. And good politicians know when they're going to lose a battle and seek to preserve their position in the on-going war. He has to be able to save himself from appearing completely entrenched in his prejudice when he knows the tide is changing. As ideas evolve, when you know you're beat, you have to be smart enough to back down. You have to save whatever credibility as a leader you have to be able to continue bringing in the money and having any voice. It's just positioning.

Hell frove over because he actually made the statement well over a month ago and nobody noticed until now.
