The latest Newsweek poll is out. Question: should Bush be re-elected? yes-45%, No-50%. Again I find this significant. This is about the 4th poll in a row now that shows Bush's approval rating either below 50%, and/or two Democrats, Kerry for one and Edwards for the other beating Bush. I am optimistic but far from overconfident about November.

The polls make the Democrats feel really good right now. But that is all they are worth. The Democrats are getting nonstop TV coverage right now and they are fresh in people's minds. It happens with every Presidential election. The only poll I am waiting for is the one that comes two weeks after the Republican convention. That will be a true measure of where the candidates stand. (The Democrats have their convention before the Republicans this year. The Democrats should feel REAL good after that; I guarantee whoever the Democratic nomineee is, he will have a double digit lead over Bush at that time.)

Well except for Bush's political maneuver the day after a primary (State of the Union the night after New Hampshire, NBC's Meet the Press the day after Washington and Michigan). God only know what will happen the Wednesday morning after Super Tuesday -- the unveiling of Osama, maybe? Oh, no, wait, that will be on Sept. 11, the week after the Republican Convention in NYC. smile.gif Keep your eyes open for Wednesday shockers between now and mid-March.

Whether it is today, next week, or 3 years from now, the capture of Bin Laden will be fantastic news for the United States and all the victims of 911. Why would the Democrats care when he was captured???? I, for one, will not degrade the memory of the 911 victims by politicizing his capture. The families of the victims deserve more than that.

I'm not entirely certain, but I think the point was that Osama has already been captured and is being kept under wraps so that it can be revealed with the most political impact in the US. If true, which I doubt, that would be the most crass politicization of the "war on terror."

You do have a point. And I have to agree that it would be the "most crass politicization of the 'war on terror'". At this point let me be the first to announce that John Kerry is an alien imposter planning the takeover of our planet by Martians. There is as much evidence to support my statement as their is that Bush is "hiding" Bin Laden someplace.

Was Dole leading Clinton in polls early in 1996? I didn't start following politics until 2000, so I'm still learning here...

Well, Fever, Dukakis was up by 17 points over Bush Sr. during the primary season.

BTW, is this the same puckman1 who was in here not too long ago quoting polls that showed Howard Dean leading big in several primary states? Must've been puckman's evil twin brother.
FeverDog
Yeah, but what about Dole? When somebody uses the word "every," I assume he means every. The last few elections, at the very least.

Actually, what the 9/11 families have demanded is some accountability about what allowed 9/11 to happen, from the poor intelligence to the failure to translate the transmitted threats the day before to the inability of the Air Force to scramble fighter jets and blow the planes out of the air, preventing the deaths of thousands of people.

The anger of the families and the threat of a huge backlash at the show at Ground Zero this upcoming fall FORCED W to back down and permit the Kean Commission more time to investigate the entire tragedy, and it's simply baffling to me why he would have been so obstructionist if he didn't have anything to hide. The FAA is a pathetic bureaucracy that failed to heed repeated warnings, so I'm not surprised that they were battling Kean and Company.

Capturing Osama bin Laden will be a day for rejoicing, but I sincerely hope that it isn't been planned as a stunt to help re-elect W. That would not only be cynical, but amoral, not that amorality would be too much of a stretch for the likes of Rumsfeld, Rice, Cheney and a few others in the administration.
