and the news is not good.
UCLAfan
I wonder how the Bush Regime will spin this one to mean that global warming is actually NOT taking place.
hockeyTom
I think its becoming more and more clear that a candidate who is strongly pro-environment is going to be more and more important and relevant. I am watching and listening to any and all Democrats on their stance and environmental positions. Its becoming to important to ignore these huge problems for much longer. Its going to take years and years to clean up the mess Shrub leaves behind.
SCTrojan
I think more importantly is convincing the "naysayers" as the article indicated. It's long over due that this country start thinking about our beautiful planet, which is the only home that we have. I've read that when astronauts, for ie, view our planet from space that their appreciation and conviction for taking care of planet earth is profoundly changed. Perhaps we should send some of our leaders on a space shuttle ride. This topic reminds me of a biological anthropology class I took. One of the topics we addressed was that human beings are the greatest predators on our planet. In my opinion I would have to add the greatest polluters too.

I wonder why this report so conveniently negates to mention that Earth's polar regions millions of years ago were tropical paradises, complete with palm trees and balmy climates. Gee, I wonder what happened to turn them all so damn frigid. rolleyes.gif
SCTrojan
I just love it when laypersons try to discredit scholars' expertise.
hockeyTom
Ah, but millions of years ago, there were not billions of people screwing up the atmosphere of the planet either. wink
SCTrojan
Stephen Hawking, a man w/ a shit load of credentials, gives his expert opinion on Global Warming.
Mary of Teck
I'll never forget the day Al Gore, a dear but slightly confused man, gave his paper on global warming in NYC, on a day when the high was in the mid teens. Fortunately, I have my mink coat and a thermos of brandy.
millerbeach
Remember that day well, sweet Mary. It may be one of the few, if, according to the experts, their dire predictions come to fruition.
Ms. de Blazer
Nothing in global warming rules out an occasional very cold day in one place. It is GLOBAL warming. Global long term temperature change.
That comment, endlessly and mindlessly repeated about that day in NYC, is exactly as logical as saying Seattle is not rainy because when I went there the sun was shining and not a cloud in the sky.

There weren't these "billions" of people around 400 or 200 years ago either, which is when these chicken little scientists say this started. rolleyes.gif

Damn those Romans and their SUV's!!!

Perhaps they ought to do some research on the earth's tilt changing every 10,000 years or so, and how this is going to affect our climate more so than any paranoid conspiracy theory that Man is destroying Earth. rolleyes.gif

Good God! This man's handicap is affecting even his common sense now. Sheesh. rolleyes.gif

Then again, he IS correct in saying that Earth will one day warm to temps like Venus, simply because the sun's life is finite and when it begins its death process, our puny planet will be toast--literally. Perhaps Mr. Hawking should have pointed that out, because his statement is utterly asinine otherwise.

MIB - If you had even a single years worth of training in the hard sciences you might be dangerous, as it is you are just a Luddite.

Everyone else - STOP FEEDING THE TROLL.

You mean, by starting threads about global warming? Good advice.

Yes of course that is happening too but I believe we are speeding up the process.

And just to be clear, Man is incapable of destroying the Earth. This planet will be here long after we and the natural course of things have made it incapable of sustaining human life.
Mary of Teck
A little-publicized ABC News poll suggests that Americans are not buying this media hysteria over global warming. Although 59% tell the pollsters they are "convinced global warming [is] under way," only 33% "think it will affect [their] own life" and 38% "favor immediate government action."

Why haven't journalists trumpeted poll results like these as loudly as they do when surveys show regrets about the liberation of Iraq? But the question answers itself.

I've had enough hard science stuff to know that this chicken little bullshit has got to stop! It's nothing but a goddamn socialist attempt to further destroy the U.S., and those idiots who believe in this crap ought to be locked up in straight jackets.

""enough hard science stuff "" ???

4th Grade Science at PS 128 is NOT ENOUGH!

""...a goddamn socialist attempt to further destroy the U.S.,..."" ???

Oh - good reply; when you disagree with someone label them a Scocialist or Communist.. News Flash: Joe McCarthy has been dead since 1957, there has been no one left to report it to since 1988

Rob, be kind to MIB...remember, he's living in that high-rise condo on the river Denial. Beautiful view, but somewhat vapid.
Maddog
I don't think he's in denial. I just think he'll say whatever is necessary to spark lively debate.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out he's on an extremely conservative board somewhere saying the exact opposite.
hockeyTom
eek! wink
Ms. de Blazer
Parade magazine apparently has joined the far left crazies. Their cover story last Sunday was on global warming.

As they say, the truth hurts.

In this case, painfully so.
MIB
Well, ain't this a hoot! No surprise here...

The UK's chief cheerleader for emissions trading, Michael Grubb, had this to say the other day.

"Friends of the Earth" is even more upset.

As Tony Blair has conceded, economic growth will always win out over fears about future weather when the two are put up against each other, wherever you are. Those who are worried about global warming have to suggest something other than an economic straitjacket if they want to be listened to. They have consistently failed to do this, becoming shriller and shriller in their rhetoric. Unfortunately for them, reality has a habit of winning out.

And what's this about acid rain?

Here's a transcript from Nova (on PBS, of all places) about the volcano in the Congo. The pertinent portion says:

QUOTE

NARRATOR: The satellite identifies the gas as sulfur dioxide, SO2, the primary cause of acid rain. And Nyiragongo is producing more than any place in the world, up to 50,000 tons per day. That's more than the amount produced by all power plants, factories and cars in the United States.  And the high concentration of SO2 is another clue for forecasting the next eruption.
Maddog
After reading some of the answers to Stephen Hawkings open question;
How can the human race survive the next hundred years?

I'm all FOR global warming. Please if you have any insights on how to speed up the process please let me know. tongue.gif

Many people are saying obey the word of God and all will be okay. Some of these people are calling for colonizing Mars? I hope there is some kind of intergalactic council that would never allow us to leave this planet until we get our sh*t together here.

I know I've said this before but I think the answer is to take the warning labels off of everything, legalize all drugs and let natural selection take it's course. It might be the end of NASCAR, but I can live with that.

Mikkerbeach,

Nice use of the word "vapid". Haven't seen it in years.
