Hey guys, First Mr Bush did a great job in putting his party in control, no doubt about that.
Here is my question for you- and I am not seeking an argument. What positions of the GOP that cause you to align with them?

I don't think Helen Thomas likes Bush, and I know I don't. By the way she is a White House Press Reporter, probably the best in the business. Guess she gave a speech today at M.I.T., where she blasted Shrub for his warmongering stance. Way to go Helen!!! You rock baby!

As I said in another thread, my hats off to Dumbya, he put his neck on the line and it paid off "big time." Now its time for the republicans to put up or shut up, according to that poll an overwheliming majority of people are expecting alot to get done.

I thought it was interesting that 52 percent OPPOSED new tax cuts. Maybe people are finally beginning to realize that the vast majority of the tax cuts are going to the wealthiest 5 percent of the population???

We would all do well to view polls less as a mirror of public opinion & more as a tool for shaping public opinion. Individuals, whether they are willing to admit to it or not, generally tend to get their views in line with those of their peers, or what they perceive those views to be.

Helen Thomas retired, I thought. And she was stating her political opinion on her own time, that's different than accusing the media a liberal bias. One person's opinion can't cancel out the "fair and balanced" Fox News Channel.

On the subject of tax cuts, Trent Lott was on Meet The Press last weekend and stated that we could make the tax cuts permanent, fight a war with Iraq, have a prescription drug program and balance the budget at the same time.

conor and raze, excellent points both. I think Lott has illusions of grandeur, or something. Don't know what he has been smoking. And conor your comment about the "fair and balanced Fox News Channel" was right on the mark. Another cable station I boycott entirely. No, just feeling which way the wind is blowing!
I think he's learned his lesson and will be much more accommodating and much less arrogant next Congress. Wish I could say the same about DeLay. but we'll see. The Pataki win and others by the GOP on moderate lines speak volumes about who's got the right strategy - and who doesn't.

He may be feeling which way the wind is blowing but its not very smart politically. No one in their right mind thinks that scenario is going to happen. I do agree that he will be a better majority leader this time around. As far as DeLay thats another story. Its not in his nature to go the "kinder and gentler" route. My hope is that he is on tv often and very vocal!

To which candidates are you referring? Pataki won by buying off New York labor unions. Elizabeth Dole? Lindsey Graham? Saxby Chambliss? John Sununu? Jim Talent? Connie Morella? Oh, wait, she lost . . . For every Mitt Romney or George Pataki you can find a candidate who won decisively as a conservative, which simply means that a GOP victory in New York or Massachusetts shouldn't really dictate strategy for Missouri or Georgia.

Wm'65 - For starters, Bonnie Dumanis, the GOP lesbian judge in SDiego, sloppily misidentified in today's NYTimes as a Democrat, who was elected District Atty. of San Diego County. She ran on a strict law and order, good government platform free of radical right hype and she beat a fellow GOP incumbent who resorted to those tired and losing tactics.
BTW, my own numbers here in SF went over 20,000 today. Still hardly enough to win, but keeping Pelosi under 80% with six points less than her last two wins makes me feel almost as good as it made her feel bad!

Right, but that's one race, and a very local race at that. If this incumbent had a challenger, he was probably in trouble anyway. Did she beat him in a primary or in a general election? Is this one of those non-partisan balloting ala Louisiana? Just curious.

There's an article on Pelosi in the Washington Post today and it is basically an interest piece on her life and how other politicians feel about her. it definitely seems like Republicans are glad to see her there, they think she is an easy target for villifying the "liberal" democrats. I hope she does a great job and proves them wrong.
Did anyone here see "Journeys with George" on HBO. The journalist/filmmaker who did that, Alexandra Pelosi is her daughter.

Thanks for pointing that out gmginsfo. Perhaps someone made an assumption based on knowledge that her opponent was republican and/or that she was a lesbian.
It's an indication of how prejudice can function and how truth can counteract it.
I hope more truth takes hold in both parties. Otherwise the majority of eligible voters in this country, who do not vote, will continue to seek other, sometimes less constructive, ways to express their disatisfaction with the two available options in USA politics.

It's my understanding she still goes to White House press conferences and asks questions. From her looks, I would guess she gets to the White House by broom.
But to answer your first question, I've been with my friends celebrating the GOP's historic Election Day victories, including Jeb Bush's reelection in Florida, Republican victories in the Texas Senate and gubernatorial races, and a new Republican Majority in the U.S. Senate, teamed with an even stronger majority in the House. I know we've moved beyond this, but I thought I'd post some of Helen Thomas's remarks. They were mostly anti-war, it seems.
"I have never covered a president who actually wanted to go to war. Bush's policy of pre-emptive war is immoral - such a policy would legitimize Pearl Harbor. It's as if they learned none of the lessons from Vietnam."
She's goes on to criticize the President for the secrecy of his presidency, such as only having held 6 press conferences so far, which are "the only forum in our society where a president can be questioned".
She also bashes the press for rolling over and playing dead instead of speaking up about this.

Here's the link to the NYTimes' correction. Funny, the original article never mentioned it was a nonpartisan race, which it was. Also missing from the retraction: the false report that Bonnie's sister was murdered - she died in a tragic house fire - and the tale of an anti-Semitic action that was never even filed. Time to rethink your Sunday morning reading???
Yes, William, her victory was "only" a local race, but a major one in a general election that shows just how successful the GOP can be when it gets back to its roots and steers clear of the radical right. Look for more of those if we're to continue our winning ways; the alternative is a matter of public record - and it's a sorry one!
Billy, THIS dog's a little slow to hunt, but the work you describe could easily be handled by one of my younger colleagues - and easily financed by the GOP if they so chose. We'll see.
DCG, I haven't seen the Post article yet, but the SF press has been full of hagiographies and puff pieces about Pelo$i for weeks. They gave her a free ride on her double-dipping PAC scandal reported in "Roll Call" 10 days before the election by not printing any mention of it and have instead told only what they can about her - that she raises a lot of money for the Dems, is "nice" (?), and is against W. So what else is new? What the loyal opposition needs is not a mindless booster, but a principled, thoughtful and skilled debater and legislator. Examine Pelo$i's record as I did in my campaign and you'll find that she's none of the above.

Well she must be doing something right to get 80% of the vote, or was that 79.99999%?
She was just elected House Minority Leader, another first for the Democrats - the first woman to lead either party in Congress.

We started out by beating up some homeless people. Then we spent some time blocking the doors to an abortion clinic so that women couldn't get in. After stealing prescription drugs from some old people and throwing them (the oldsters) out on to the streets (it was cold outside, too!), we broke into some children's piggy banks and hand-delivered the change to some corporate executives we know. Next stop: The Potomac River, which we polluted with toxic chemicals, being careful to kill as many fish and birds as possible. Then we made our way to a pristine Virgina forest, which we clear-cut and sold for development. They're opening the Starbucks next week, and then another one across the street the next week. We capped the night off by firing our guns into the air in celebration, undoubtedly hitting some innocent children in the process. All in all, it was a really fun night.

I hate to sound contrary, but according to this article the defeated Republican is a "moderate." Moreover, according to the Times:
"Nobody dared bring it up; it was as sotto voce as could be," said Samuel Popkin, a professor of political science at the University of California at San Diego. "What really decided the election was that Pfingst made a lot of enemies on his staff," Professor Popkin said. "And that never helps. When the other D.A.'s say, `We don't support you,' that's a very big slap in the face."
So this wasn't really a battle of conservative vs. moderate, but an ambitious politician who saw an opening (which is a good thing). I don't see how this has any national implications.
It is funny though that the Times said "it was no secret" that she was a Democrat. A secret to her, maybe.

William, If you want an accurate report of this story, visit the San Diego Union's site; The NYT article had at least three glaring errors, of which her party affiliation was only one. The Union stories detail the problems with Pfingst.
Yes, RZB, if opposing the war in a town that makes opposition to any form of war, except that carried on in the streets of American cities under the guise of "peaceful exercise of First Amendment rights," is "right," then she's hitting all the right nerves here in SF. It also helps to have the 3M factor going for you: money, a machine and a media slavishly devoted to your cause and heedless of the difference between accurate reporting and editorializing.
I'm proud of what I did in my campaign: getting the highest number of votes for any male GOP Congressional candidate in this town in the last 15 years (Pelosi's current percentage is 79.12, BTW and she was actually pissed she didn't get 85% as she did her last two times; ego much?), standing with the President and against the appeasers, and showing that a gay moderate can make a difference even here. Maybe next time, with a lot more money and time to campaign, I'll make it happen. But I have absolutely no regrets at all and will gladly do it again. AS TR would have noted, I was the man in the ring and I'm ready for another round.
