Full Version: The Lost Art of the Coffin Corner Punt

Yesterday truly made it clear how ridiculous this whole notion of a punter trying to float a short punt high and trying to allow his guys to get downfield and down the ball as cloe to goal line as possible. Is this just arrogance or sheer stupidity?

Between the two games there were numerous times the teams were punting from around the 50 yard line or inside the 50 and with a simple coffin corner kick could have pinned the opponent inside the 10 or so. But every time, they tried to get cute and the ball would roll into the end zone, giving the return team possession at the 20. A big net of 25 yards. Just so dumb! Only once yesterday did the punting team manage to pin their opponent inside the 20 and that was a call that could have gone either way when the Panthers' special teams plyaer may or may not have gotten out of the end zone in time.

This play rarely works; almost always th epunt sails or rolls into the end zone. So what's the point?

I saw a pooch punt work once, but it was many years ago in a college game.

Can't most of the three step delivery punters take two steps for a pooch kick? Perhaps the direct snap to a placekicker for a punt might work better...

Or better still, how about Randall Cunningham's "quick kick" on Monday Night Football in the late '80s?
