In today's wacko column comes this gem...
As many people know, tropical storms/hurricanes were given female names for decades. This followed the established practice of giving inanimate objects feminine names or referring to such in the feminine (she was a beautiful ship, etc.).
In 1979, responding to pressure and complaints from feminists, including the National Organization of (some) Women, the World Metereological Association added male names. Shortly thereafter, the decision was made to use names reflecting the culture of the areas affected by such storms. So, English, French, and Hispanic names were used for Atlantic and Caribbean storms to signify these cultures affected by the storms: English for the U.S. and U.S./British Virgin Islands; French for those islands belonging to France; and Spanish for the Hispanic islands.
Well, here comes Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D., Texas), who has noticed that the list of names currently used does not include any African American names. "All racial groups should be represented," huffed Lee.
Maybe she's right. Here comes:
- Hurricane Mohammed
- Tropical Storm Taneeka
- Hurricane Xi Pong
- Hurricane Osama (wonder if they'd retire that name after, say, it hit NYC as a Category 5 storm?)
- Tropical Storm Benalakalani
- Hurricane Punjab
Oy vay!
Note: For those who are undoubtedly overly sensitive, I am not attempting to be racist when posting such suggested names; rather, I just think Lee's being ridiculous, as she does not understand how the WMA comes up with such names.

Why limit them to Earthling names?

Good point, twin.
Hurricane Uhura? (Hey! That's an African American one to boot!)
Hurricane Spock?
Hurricane Palpatine?
Tropical Storm Rippley?

Sheila Jackson Lee proves once again she's an idiot! What is an African-American name? My partner teaches high school here in DC -- 95% black -- what are the students names?: Michael, Shannon, Patrick, Sam, Theresa, for the most part -- maybe even a Sheila! So, Ms. Jackson Lee, blacks are well represented in the hurricanes. Time to tackles some real issues -- like why are you consistently ranked as the worse boss on the Hill?

And once again, Rep. Jackson Lee proves she is not worthy to sit in the seat occupied by
Barbara Jordan and Mickey Leland. With the economy in the shitter, *this* is what she thinks the Congress should be spending time on?!?!?!

Klingons. Ferenghis. All the "races" (?) not in the Alliance, or whatever it is that the Enterprise represents. Sorry, I'm not much of a
Star Trek fan.
http://www.klingon.org/http://www.kli.org/ yields such gems as:
Hurricane B'Etor
Hurricane DenIbya' Qatlh
Hurricane janluq pIqarD HoD
and so on.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Fabian (is that a tribute to the 50's singer?) steams through the Atlantic as a powerful Category 4 storm. Will it head toward the mid-Atlantic states? Will it hit the northeast? New England?
Damn Al-Quaeda (or however the hell you spell that)!!

The 65th anniversary of this one is coming up. It didn't need a name to leave an impression.

The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 was one of the most destructive and powerful storms ever to strike southern New England. This system developed in the far eastern Atlantic, near the Cape Verde Islands on September 4. It made a twelve day journey across the Atlantic and up the eastern seaboard before crashing ashore on September 21 at Suffolk County, Long Island, then into Milford, Connecticut.

Well the floral designed at my local Michaels store is named Fabian. So I guess this new hurricane represents the gays. That bitch Grace just dumped a lot of water on Dallas this weekend, so I dont like her no way.
I can only hope to live to see Tropical Storm Juwan or Hurricane Shanequa. Shouldnt we also include Native Americans and have a storm named Runs with Beaver?

Deja vu, twin? Fabian is expected to make a turn toward the north a bit, but whether it goes northeast and out to see when nearing the U.S., or whether it goes up the coast and hits New England remains to be seen. Regardless, it's not expected to be as strong at that point as it is now.

Not to argue that this is an important subject, but DCBucky, get real, years ago my daughter's Valentine list fron school included Shaniqua B., Shaniqua J., Shaniqua M., and Shaniqua R. No other names had to have the initial of the last name. And if you think there are not Hakims, D'Shauns, Traeshauns, Shantaes, Jamals, and Keiondres in the DC Public Schools, think again, Sir. Ms. Jackson Lee is just representing ALL of her constituents.
But is anyone really complaining that there aren't any lethal, destructive storms named after them?

I noticed the 2005 Eastern Pacific list contains the name "Hilary." Too bad this can't be for the Atlantic. I can see the jokes now! (slightly different spelling notwithstanding)
"Hurricane Hilary blows through Manhattan." eek!
"Hilary's winds wreak havoc upon Washington, D.C."
Wouldn't Hurricane Monica blowing through DC be more appropriate?
I'm sure, JC, but I didn't see that name on the list.

Isabel's coming, and is she pissed!!!
Well Rep. Lee march and protest her arrival if, as expected, she slams into the NC/VA coast right outside Washington? Perhaps Jesse can march with her and they can both be washed out to sea. (Relax, it's just a pun.)
Speaking of Jesse, why not name a hurricane after him? First, it would be in honor of an African American--something Lee wants. Secondly, it would be accurate to attach the name Jesse to something that blows into town, makes a mess of things for the locals, and departs, leaving things in shambles.

Category 5. Lots of rain in northern VA Friday, probably not due to Isabel. Overcast now; rain predicted for Tuesday. I have charged my batteries and have checked the spare cells for the various radios.
Start here.
Oh, dear. Isabel's current projected path is directly over NAS Patuxent River, St. Mary's County, Charles County, and PG County MD. 8 a.m. Friday, it will be over State College PA. One hopes the Nittany Lions will be in hiding.

This slightly revised track has it going over Baltimore, hon, and on to Rochester NY.
MIB
Sep 14 2003, 06:11 PM
twin, that track is bound to be revised several times between now and the end of the week. A few factors are critical but still unknown: The high pressure over the western Atlantic off the coast, the trough in northwestern U.S., and the fading low pressure that once was T.S. Henri. If the high strengthens and/or the trough in the NW U.S. slows down, Isabel will end up farther west of the NHC's current track. If not, she'll probably follow the projected path.
Let's just hope she comes ashore as a big Category 5 hurricane. After all, if she's going to hit, she might as well make history, right?

eek!

Don't mean to divert this thread from the hurricane, 'cause all of us here on the East Coast have our eyes glued on Isabel, but Ms. Jackson Lee is at it again ...
She circulated a "Dear Colleague" letter last week on this topic:
"It is time to restore the air of civility and respect in the House of Representatives. A symbolic start to that effort would be reinstating foods in the House cafeterias and dining halls with their traditional 'American' names — French toast and French fries."
She sure has a talent for picking obscure, meaningless issues to devote her efforts (she must think enough Members of Congress are working on the deficit, the war, the energy bill ... so she can go off on her own agenda).

DC, you're absolutely correct. Has she nothing better to do? Jeez Louise!
Since you mentioned it, I apologize for this digression, but when are those hyperpatriotic idiots who bitch about "French" fries going to learn that the word "French" in that context has nothing to do with France? It refers to a process of cutting the potatoes. Idiots.
OK, back to Hurricane Isabel destroying the east coast.

where was the outrage when certain more-patriotic-than-thou members of congress took time out from the economy, jobs creation, the deficit, etc, etc, to change the name in the first place? mib, where are you? this is hypocricy verite, and it is your job to expose it, not compound it!

I happened to be flipping through radio stations while driving during lunch today I came across Rush Limbaugh ranting about this. While it isn't hard to agree with these sentiments, to hear it coming from the right . . . well, basically it seems like an "our $h!t doesn't stink" rationalization.
If it is petty & pedantic of Rep. Lee to bring up this issue, surely it must have been petty & pedantic of those Republican representatives who brought us freedom fries & freedom toast & consumer boycotts & axis of weasels & all that in the first place.

And that brilliant GOPer Tom McClintock hissed out the other that the Appellate Court's recall stay decision was, "French!" How kooky is this guy? It's like the crackpots who keep saying John Kerry (who could easily pass as the living embodiment of Ichabod Crane or anyone from 17th century New England with that craggy face and that thick hair) looks "French." Have these folks ever SEEN French people? Most are a lot shorter and swarthier or ruddier than Kerry. Maybe they're just jealous of that lovely (Irish?) thatch of hair.
(Actually the decision would probably be "EU," since that quasi-sovereign body's courts and administrative apparatus can and often do make summary decisions that cancel out the legislative decisions of member states.)
French fries, french toast, french doors, french kisses, french twists, french vanilla ice cream, you name it. I think we should start renaming everything as "French"--like German potato salad, Russian dressing, Chinese paper flowers, Swiss chocolate, Brazil nuts....
