(Atlanta, Georgia) Legislation will be introduced by Republicans in the Georgia legislature Monday that would override Atlanta's anti-discrimination law and legalize discrimination against gays and lesbians.

The bill seeks to prevent the city from penalizing an exclusive country club which denies family memberships to same-sex couples.

Rep. Earl Ehrhart (R-Powder Springs), the chief sponsor of the bill said it would forbid any government in Georgia from sanctioning \"any private social organization\" if that organization's rules abide by the Georgia Constitution and the U.S. Constitution.
....

Ehrhart is joined in sponsoring the bill by three other Republicans, including House Minority Whip Jerry Keen (R-St. Simons Island).

Atlanta's Human Relations Commission found Druid Hills Golf Club guilty of violating the city's anti-discrimination ordinance when it refused to allow family privileges to two members one of whom is gay the other lesbian.

This is no suprise. This is typical Republicans at work. Even if it has little hope of passing, you can't ignore that the intent was there and will continue to resurface as often as Republicans are elected.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't country clubs private organizations? If so, then why shouldn't they be allowed to admit and bar whomever they wish?

I'm waiting for the day when a girl sues to be allowed to pledge a fraternity...

Fever dog you are right, but his club also serves the public for functions and it gets it's liquor liscence and other liscences from the state and local authorities, thus the debate is going on, should they be subject to the rules that govenr the public in the city, county and state that issue these liscences?
When brought before the City Council, the plaintiffs (if you can call them that) one lesbian and one gay male couple won the first round. The couples were expecting a long drawn out process, but a unanymous decision was rendered in 30 minutes. They deemed the Druid Hills country club was in violation of the City's ciscrimination laws. The chairman of Druid Hills country club, G. Dennis Berry, resigned his position almost immediately. He is also the President and C.O.O. of Cox Enterprises which owns THe Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Sadie Fields, the State chairperson of the Georgia Christian Coalition said that this was only an issue of gay marriages, and she is more right than she ever thought. Donna Narducci the Ex. Director for Atlanta Pride, agreed with Sadie. This is about gay couples not being afforded the same rights that straight couples are given. And as long as we are not allowed to be married, then we will continue to be second class citizens. (My own humble opinion)
Imagine if a gay couple wants to adopt a child. "Well this is reserved for married couples." Your partner dies and your work place only gives benefits to spouses or children. Where does that leave you if they do not recognize your existence? Your partner is in the hospital, and only spouses or immediate family are allowed in. His/her family is there and they will not allow you to visit because they say you are not legally family! And this does happen!!! These are just a few instances. Those of you who do not think this is an important issue need to take a long look at the long term effects of discrimenation.
