Full Version: Focus on the Family Drops Wells Fargo

Read about it here Focus on the Family (Dr. Dobson's Focus on eradicating Gays Organization) has decided that Wells Fargo is just too Gay-Friendly so they're pulling their money and going elsewhere.

and if you read the article you'll see that FoF denigrates gays in one paragraph then claims to have sympathy for the homosexual community. rolleyes.gif

Good thing I have Wells Fargo as my mortgage company. I will recommend them to everyone I know now that this has happened. Tell Dobson to just keep on hatin'. I'm sure Jesus would be pleased.

Thanks for the information.

Is Wells Fargo gay-friendly? I banked at Wells Fargo once. I didn't find them friendly in any capacity. :-)

I know Focus on the Family well. Though some might debate that one can exist in nature, I am a gay Christian. Years ago, I ordered a cassette tape from Focus on the Family and was placed on their mailing list.

As time passed, I became increasingly annoyed by their often harsh outspokenness against homosexuality. Though I feel they have a right to believe what they want, I found their expression of their beliefs to be a bit (or a lot) more venom-dipped than acceptable for me. So I wrote and asked to be removed from their mailing list.

After I received their mailings for another six months, I called and asked to be removed from their mailing list.

I continued to get their mailings. After another few months, I wrote again, called again, and e-mailed any employee I could find with a FOTF e-mail address. I received zero responses from the e-mails but was told by phone that I would be removed.

The mailings continued for another four months.

Now, of course it would have been easy enough for me to simply throw their publications in the trash when I received them, but I was annoyed by their apparent complete disregard for my wishes.

So, I did an internet search for gay clubs and bars in Colorado Springs (where Focus on the Family is located). There weren't many, but I selected one of the bars, addressed an envelope to its manager, enclosed a twenty dollar bill and a letter.

In the letter, I explained that I was a gay Christian, and I appreciated their efforts in supporting the gay community in Colorado Springs, especially under the likely oppressive shadow of FOTF. I mentioned that I felt "harrassed" by FOTF. I wished them luck in their business and closed the letter with "Inspired by Focus on the Family."

I CCed the letter to Dr. Dobson at Focus on the Family and informed him/them that because they refused to honor my request to be removed from their mailing list, I would be donating cash in their name to gay organizations around Colorado Springs every time I received a mailing from their organization.

I never received a response from them, nor did I ever receive another mailing.

Just thought I'd share. :-)

I don't blame them. I dropped We'll f**k You along time ago as a bank. They did some really shitty things that ended up costing me a few hundred in overdraft fees. And for some reason someone in France could buy stuff and use my account to pay for them.

I saw them at Pride. They approached me at Pride. I said "No thank you, I have already been f**ked up the ass by you guys. I think it was rape or a mugging because you were not using lube or a condom. I ended up with no money and a sore ass."
millerbeach
Oh, Erik, honey, if you'd only relax, it might not hurt so much!
Allen
You actually talked to them?? Wow ... that's a first. I hope you weren't rambling. rolleyes.gif

hey Nathan, I'll definitely check that out. I was snooping around the Focus on the Family Site and I see that they've done a lot of the research already; they have a pretty good list. I'm not sure how anyone could avoid doing business with a company that is gay-friendly. smile.gif
theodoresdaddy
my BF works for Wells and they are a very gay friendly

they received a 100% from the HRC--probably the largest bank to receive that score

they are HQed here in San Francisco so I'm sure that plays a large part in their corporate attitude towards the community

By the way, if you'd like to send a note to Ford regarding their decision to roll over and kiss the ass of the AFA:

Bless your heart Allen. Especially when you are using it to do your cardio smile.gif

I try not to ramble beefcake. Really I do. But when I am confonted and tied up in our romance novel, well I am enamored and head over heels. I so do not want those precious moments to end. I am lost in your eyes and smile. My tongue is tied as are my ankles to the bed frame. I am your prisoner of love, tethered to you by heart strings. I can't get away even though I desparately want to.

I am still MillerB's love slave though eek!

Let's hope Miller puts a gag in your mouth and leaves it there. eek!
Erik G
Weasey you are into kink? I suppose if the gag of sorts has a pleasant flavor it wouldn't inhibit my posting too much. Now Miller Beach is another distraction entriely wink The keyboard might get a little sticky from trying to fit two people in the gorilla suit.

Yeah I did someone who works at Wells Fargo. Holy Shit what a drama queen!
millerbeach
W-man, I wouldn't waste Erik's beautiful mouth by stuffing it with a gag. I've got something that will gag him, but it certainly isn't a sock. Smooches, Erik!

Thanks for the link! I just sent this email:

I was very disappointed that Ford cowered to the antigay American Family Association and is pulling ads out of gay publications.

For the past month, my partner and I have been discussing purchasing a new vehicle for her, and we were planning on buying a Ford Escape before the end of the year. But since hearing that you are pulling ads out of gay publications because of pressure from the AFA, we have decided we will purchase a Jeep!

I currently drive a Mercury and when the time comes for me to buy a new vehicle, it will not be one from the Ford family!
Lksimcoe
Thanks for the link. I just sent the following email myself.

I have been a loyal Ford customer for many years now, and am on my third Ford vehicle. I chose Ford above other brands, for a number of reasons, including their committment to diversity.

I typically replace my vehicle every 3 years, and have purchased (in order) a Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer edition, Ford Windstar, and most recently a Ford Explorer, Eddie Bauer edition.

Due to your company's caving in to the religious right extremists, I will no longer purchase a Ford. My money will go to a company that appreciates it. And that includes Ford subsidiaries that will be avoided as well.

I will also impress upon my famly not to purchase Ford products, and that includes Volvo, which other family members swear by.

smalltownboy
I'm happy to read y'alls notes to Ford...I sent something similiar....I reminded them that I have purchased two Ford vehicles since June, 2005 in order to support Ford after the threat by the AFA.....I told them I felt like it was a personal slap in my face to have read their decision to pull adds from all mainstream gay media...and when it came time to replace these vehicles, sadly, Ford would not be on my list to choose from....

Supposedly the HRC (who gave Ford a perfect 100, just days ago) is going to be commenting on this topic within the next week or so.....I'll be interested to hear what they say....

Thanks everyone, keep em coming!

Everytime I try to send Ford a message in Safari I get this popup window:

The certificate for this website is invalid. You might be connecting to a website that is pretending to be “www.ford.com” which could put your confidential information at risk. Would you like to connect to the website anyway?

I also get something similar and more severe sounding in Mozilla Firefox, so I've just sent e-mails directly to all the Ford executives and divisions listed on the AmericaBlog site.

I also saw that the two people who urged Ford to take this step were former Bush admin officials. Don't they ever tire of slagging off on gay people?
fantomas
Sheesh, now Ford got caught secretly trying to propagandize on its behalf on AmericaBlog!

Ford busted for junior high-school style propaganda hijinks

How pathetic and stupid! They don't realize in 2005 that sites actually capture your ISP? I guess that's the way, it's all spin and propaganda, instead of doing the right thing and not trashing loyal customers because some Religious Wrong pseudo-Christian fanatics can't get over their anti-gay obsessions. A battery of psychiatrists would definitely do them some good.

Keltic, I don't think so because the "liberal" mainstream media are in the pocket of the White House, but the stuff just keeps coming. It turns out that a former W appointee, Ziad Ojakli, who works for Ford and who brokered this anti-gay deal, is also behind the right-wing nominees for the Supreme Court. He's been using his office to strategize on behalf of Roberts, Scalito and others. And we wonder why Ford can't get its act together, yet its executives have time to devote to crap like this....

Ford exec who brokered secret deal with gay-haters caught leading the charge for Bush's extreme right Supreme Court nominees out of his Ford office

QUOTE
Lobbyists, meanwhile, are already plotting their strategy to further the [John Roberts Supreme Court] nomination. Roll Call (7/26, Newmyer) says that \"just one day after President Bush announced Roberts as his pick to succeed retiring Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, an elite group of GOP lobbyists gathered in the downtown offices of Ford Motor Co. to discuss strategy.\" The meeting, \"which lasted less than an hour, gathered some of the relatively small number of veteran Republican loyalists with experience in Supreme Court confirmation fights, participants said.\" The gathering \"was hosted by Ziad Ojakli, who earlier this year finished up three years as the administration's top lobbyist in the Senate to take a job in Ford's Washington office. Helping Ojakli lead the meeting were Candi Wolff, Bush's top Congressional liaison and Ed Gillespie, the former Republican National Committee chairman tapped by the White House to help win Senate confirmation for Roberts.\"

If so many Americans didn't depend on these scumbags for jobs, I'd say let them go completely out of business. I'm glad I don't drive one of their crappy cars, even though I almost bought one three years ago!

No wonder the Lions suck. Nobody at Ford can think for themselves or do what's right.

That's so funny about the early comment about ordering something from Focus on the Family and never escaping their mailing list. I ordered a tape of my favorite Christian author, and boy she's been through the wringer lately (did I say I had a perfect marriage, I mean I'm getting divorced and I'm a drug addict!). Anyway, I've been on their list ever since. They have some pretty stupid stuff they send out, just appealing to reall base fears and prejudices. I just throw it away and let them spend their money on me. Though I'd rather them buy me dinner.

It made CNN last night. Wolf Blitzer did a story on Ford dropping ads in gay orientated press. He said the story started out on various websites and Blogs and just kept getting bigger. Thought they might have mentioned us but didnt happen. He said Fords inbox has been flooded by people commenting on this decision. It was also mentioned that several companies have staff whose job it is to monitor blogs to make sure the companies dont get bad publicity like this. Ford had no comment beyond "it was strickly a business decision".

The story made the business section of the local Gannet newspaper here.

Yeah Fantomas, yet even more proof that the rich have been breeding amongst themselves for too long.

Ford should be able to make whatever decisions they want. Then they can observe the magic of the marketplace. The double income no kids crowd stops buying their tired lame-ass shit. Thes auto companies spend soooooo much money on advertising. You have to question where it is coming from and at what costs.

Basically these companies, that are base for right wing politics obviously, need to feel a little financial hurt. They will also be unable to fund their bullshit politics.

Basically if Ford decides that this is okay and a good business decision, I think most queers can live without a Ford in the driveway, even Nathan.

Well, you're correct...first and foremost I'm a queer....I'm trying to decide exactly what my next move will be on this situation....but I'm in the process of making a series of adjustments to show my anger.

I made a comment on my blog this morning, I caught Ford and Hertz (a Ford owned Company) viewing my blog this morning .

I also had a TWO WAY e-mail conversation with Robert Davis, Senior Vice President, Product Development and Quality of Mazda’s North American operations today...I sent an email to several Ford executives and he was the only one that responded....his initial response was basically a fill in the blank form type, but I responded back to that one reminding him of the 480 BILLION dollar buying power of the gay community and he responded back personally and it went from there....I won't disclose the details, but he assured me there is concern, especially among the "foreign" brands in the Ford family of vehicles.

Yep one of my riding buds, and former coworker, works for a print shop that uses a lot of Xerox digital color and b&w printing equipment. He heard from a manager or something at xerox that he had checked out his blog.

So yeah Nathan sweetie, my IP was baited into scoping your blog a few times. But do not worry, I read that playgirl for the pictures only wink

I remember working for Procter & Gamble. Temp workers are not allowed to use the same bathrooms or breakrooms as full-time employees. The same with General Mills. Of course I can do their jobs better than they can. But piss in the same pot ?

I also read the article how they are going to shut down the Ford Ranger plant in St. Paul. Poor workers are going to have to settle for less pay and benefits out here in the real world. So every time I see a "w" sticker on a Ford I just smile. Yep, how many dumb asses working for Ford's union labor actually voted anti-labor? Kind of like police voting Bush because he stands tough on crime by destroying the police budget. Vets because he is tough on war and annihilates benefits for veterans. Don't worry those plant workers will get pay until 2007. Thanks to their evil union of course. Jesus Chrysler man, these super rich f**ks might make a little less money and have a little less control over corrupt politics. How will we carry on?

I guess the bigger question is why are all these folks just figuring out now that Ford sucks?

The only reason to get on their mailing list is to get their mailing list. Thus you can send your countermeasure to all their mailing list biggrin.gif Otherwise you are just killing trees like a good Christian.
