A small victory for us. It's front page news today:

QUOTE
Society's notion of marriage has changed and governments need to recognize that, the B.C. Court of Appeal declared yesterday as it strongly endorsed the right of gay and lesbian couples to marry.

The appeal court gave the provincial and federal governments until July 12, 2004, to change existing marriage laws. But on that date, regardless of whether governments comply, same-sex marriages must be allowed, the court indicated.

It seems that people (generally) are much more sensible in your country. Is that true? I have other friends in Toronto and have visited Vancouver and Toronto. Everyone seems to be much more in tune with the human side of issues.

Bravo to the appeals court for voicing this opinion.

Plus, correct me if I am wrong my Canadian friends, Canada does not have a right wing (religious) that I know of that has the power and clout we do down here. It always seems like Canada is two steps ahead of us in the U.S.. Bravo to B.C. Just one more reason why I love it and Canada. wink

Two really interesting things about this case struck me. One is that the decision was unanimous. I would have thought there'd be some holdovers from the years when the Social Credit Party governed the province. Two, they based the decision on the Federal charter of rights, rather than on B.C.'s own anti-discrimination legislation, meaning that it could have national repercussions.

I don't know about more sensible in general, but certainly Canada is decades ahead of the States on gay rights. There is a religious right, but it's mostly concentrated in the Alliance Party (curiously strong in B.C. as well as in other western provinces). I often think, too, that debate in Canada is typically driven more by pragmatic concerns than ideological ones.

Thanks for the love puckman1... but I was just waiting for a Canadian politian to say something bigotted just to prove we have our share of homophobes.

I submit the deputy leader of the Progressive Conservative party:

QUOTE
Elsie Wayne, the deputy leader of the Progressive Conservatives, said yesterday that homosexuals should \"shut up\" about their lifestyle and complained that Canadians should not have to tolerate gay pride parades, drag queens and same-sex marriages.

The remarks prompted outrage from Scott Brison, a gay Tory MP and party leadership candidate. Mr. Brison said Mrs. Wayne's comments smacked of bigotry and demanded she be stripped of her job as deputy leader.
Due to a smaller population, we have fewer people on the extreames (left and right), but we still have them. We have a different history (no revolutionary war, no slavery, for example) which as shaped our national identity differently. I think of Canada as a somewhat blander version of the US. America Lite, so to speak.
