Probably so, once everyone learns we'll be dropping $87 billion in Iraq Im sure his numbers will go back up.

By the way, where was that "Mission Accomplished" banner????

I missed the speech (luckily forgot about it as I was all into football).

How did the speech play out? Hopefully his numbers will continue to dive...just like his "daddy's" did before the election.

I got this and had to pass it along...

Dr. Seuss Meets President Bush

Author unknown

The Whos down in Whoville liked this country a lot,

But the Grinch in the White House, he really did not.

He didn't arrive by the will of the Whos,

But stole the election he really did lose.

Vowed to "rule from the middle," then installed his regime.

Did this really happen or is it a dream?)

Didn't listen to voters, just friends he was pleasin'

Now, please don't ask why, no one quite knows the reason.

It could be his heart wasn't working just right.

It could be, perhaps, that he wasn't too bright.

But no doubt the most likely reason of all,

Is that both brain and heart were two sizes too small.

In times of great turmoil, this was the bad news,

To have a big gummint that ignores its Whos.

But the Whos shrugged their shoulders,

Went on with their work,

Their duties as citizens so casually did shirk.

They shopped at the mall and the watched their T.V.

They drove their gas guzzling big S.U.V.

Oblivious to what had gone down in D.C.

Ignoring the threats to their democracy.

They read the same papers that ran the same leads,

Reporting what only served corporate needs.

(For the policies affecting the lives of all nations

Were made by the giant U.S. Corporations.)

Big business grew fatter, fed by its own greed,

And by people who shopped for the things they don't need.

But amidst all the apathy came some unrest,

The Whos came to see we were fouling our nest.

And those who cared for the ideals of this nation

Began to discuss and exchange information.

Things missing in all of the corporate-owned news

Of FTAA meetings and CIA coups.

Of drilling for oil and restricting their rights.

They published some books and created Websites

Began to write letters and use their e-mail

(Though Homeland Security might send them to jail!)

What began as a whisper soon grew to a roar,

These things going on they just couldn't ignore.

They started to rise up and fight City Hall,

Let their voices be heard, as they rose to the call,

To vote, to petition, to gather, dissent,

To question the policies of the "president."

As greed gained in power and power knew no shame

The Whos came together, sang "Not in our name!"

One by one from their sleep and their slumber they woke

The old and the young, and all kinds of good folk,

The black, brown and white, the gay, bi- and straight,

All united to sing, "Feed our hope, not our hate!

Stop stockpiling weapons and aiming for war!

Stop feeding the rich, start feeding the poor!

Stop storming the deserts to fuel SUV's!

Stop telling us lies on our mainstream TV's!

Stop treating our children as a market to sack!

Stop feeding them Barney, Barbie and Big Mac!

Stop trying to addict them to lifelong consuming,

In a time when severe global warming is looming!

Stop sanctions! They're killing the kids in Iraq!

Start dealing with ours who are strung out on crack!"

A mighty sound started to rise and to grow,

"The old way of thinking, it simply must go!

No more God versus Allah, Muslim against Jew

With what lies ahead, well, it simply won't do!

No American dream that cares only for wealth

Ignoring the need for community health.

The rivers and forests are demanding their pay,

If we're to survive, we must walk a new way.

No more excessive and mindless consumption

Let's sharpen our minds up, and garner our gumption.

For ideas are simple, but practice is hard,

And not to be won by a poem on a card.

It needs the ideas and the acts of each Who,

So let's get together and plan what to do!"

And so they all gathered from all 'round the Earth

And from it all came a miraculous birth.

The hearts and the minds of the Whos they did grow,

Three sizes to fit what they feel and they know.

While the Grinches all shrank from their hate and their greed, From bearing the weight of their every foul deed. So from that day onward the standard of wealth, Was whatever fed the Whos' spiritual health.

They gathered together to revel and feast,

And thanked all who pitched in to conquer their beast.

For although our story pits Grinches 'gainst Whos,

The true battle lies in what we daily choose.

For inside each Grinch is a tiny small Who,

And inside each Who is a tiny Grinch too.

One thrives on love and one thrives on greed.

Who will win out? It depends who you feed!

Forgot to add this in initial post:

"A majority (52%) said it’s time for someone new in the White House, while just two in five (40%) said the president deserves to be re-elected. Last month, 45% said re-election was in order, and 48% said it was time for someone new."

Pewter -- you didn't miss anything other than an idiot standing in front of a camera straining to read the telepromter, stumbling over his words and blinking incessently.

Well, they both have about the same IQ, but he was referring to your buddy Dumyba.

Did I miss the part where he explained where those "hundreds of tons" of WOMD were??

I didn't watch the speech, but I am outraged that Shrub says he needs another $80 billion for Iraq. Once we have gone through that, why do I see him asking for more when thats gone????? rolleyes.gif

Correction: its $87 billion, but who's counting? We can just pay that with another tax cut....thats the cure-all....

It's clear what the 2 main objectives were for last night's speech.

1. To appeal for money from the U.S. and int'l aid from the U.N., the organization dismissed as "irrelevant" just a few months ago.

2. To get the W.Bush image and message out there just before the 9/11 anniversary to once again link the two together. The message is undeniable. "Only I, W.Bush can rescue you from the horrors of 9/11!"

During the speech, he again made referential connections between 9/11, al qaeda and Iraq.
QUOTE
And for America, there will be no going back to the era before September the 11th, 2001 -- to false comfort in a dangerous world. We have learned that terrorist attacks are not caused by the use of strength -- they are invited by the perception of weakness.

And the surest way to avoid attacks on our own people is to engage the enemy where he lives and plans. We are fighting that enemy in Iraq and Afghanistan today, so that we do not meet him again on our own streets, in our own cities.
(President's address to the nation 9/7/03)

QUOTE
Bush, who went to war over weapons of mass destruction that have never been found and who insisted Iraq had ties to al Qaeda that have never been substantiated, said Iraq has now become the \"central front\" in the war on terrorism triggered by the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. (reuters)

He knows that 9/11 was responsible for his enormous popularity and public support and he's trying to milk that cash cow once again.

and then earlier today, in Ireland...

QUOTE
SHANNON, Ireland (Reuters) - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said on Monday opposition to the U.S. President was encouraging Washington's enemies and hindering his 'war against terrorism'. He said if Washington's enemies believed Bush might waver or his opponents prevail, that could increase support for their activities.

\"They take heart in that and that leads to more money going into these activities or that leads to more recruits or that leads to more encouragement or that leads to more staying power,\" he told reporters traveling with him on his plane.

so in other words... to be a good american, you can never ever criticize the man in power? When did we stop being the United States of America? When did the USofA become North Korea?

Bush has declined to visit Ground Zero on the attacks anniversary. Maybe he doesnt feel comfortable breathing the air or maybe it conflicted with a fund raising event.

the pre-planned White House defense (as seen post-speech on the FoxNews channel) was a classic.

when given the criticism that W.Bush failed to give anything resembling details on what he would do with the money or how he would resolve the Iraq situation, both former underSec of State Larry Eagleburger and a congressman from AZ (forgot his name. looked like a bulldog) had the same reply.
[edited to add his name, J.D. Hayworth R-AZ]

said at different times and separate interviews, they said "He only had 15 minutes to speak! You can't go into details in 15 minutes!"

when told that the president did not have a time limit on his speech - he could have taken as long as he wanted - the congressman and Eagleburger both chose to ignore the comment. The silence is deafening, guys. what's the matter? didn't think anyone would point that out?

and Sean Hannity was a classic. His derisive manner and lack of professionalism as he interviewed (read: "attempted to shout over Wes Clark, the invited guest") was second only to his idiotic comment when he became the first of the night to bring up "those 16 words taken out of context"

Hannity needs to realize, that even the White House has admitted to the gaffe. and "those 16 words" are actually innocuous when taken OUT of context. It's only when "those 16 words" are seen IN context with all the other deliberate "mis-statements" by Powell, Rice, Rumsfeld, Bush, Wolfie et al that those words are seen for what they are, a campaign of deception.

Ung, look, the people on Faux could care less about the sorts of basic issues you're broaching. Obviously W as the president delivering a national address can speak as long as he likes, but I guess Eagleburger and that halfwit former actor don't realize this, or they did but it conflicted with their attempts to spin and dissemble. Sean Hannity is a loudmouth who rarely lets the truth enter his blather; he just blows harder and harder till everyone is deafened, and then keeps blaring on.

In terms of the UN request, I can only bet that Cheney, Rumsfeld and others are stewing that the main nations that have the funds to underwrite this Iraq debacle--that is, the nations with huge economies--are the main ones that not only opposed W's unilateralism but also suggested that the situation we're in today might be a likely outcome. Germans invented the word Schadenfreude, and supposedly the French diplomats are trying to find a way to accommodate the Americans, but the fact remains that W and Co. trashed these nations, especially the French, lied about them after the conflict was declared "over," and have kept up the nastiness even as they knew they'd need French, German and EU support. Maybe they will give some money, but they'd be foolish to send their troops unless they, and the UN, had more say.

Rumsfeld's comments are of a piece with his Strangelovian outlook on the war, the world, America. I don't think anyone beyond the far right takes them seriously, though ironically they are Stalinesque in their extremity, cowardice and intellectual bankruptcy.

Back to W's sinking popularity: recently I spoke with a friend in Missouri, where W has been of late, trying to shore up his support in that key, electorally rich midwestern state. My friend said that the number of protesters outside both W appearances, in St. Louis and Kansas City, exceeded the people attending.

I'd say W's chances of winning New Hampshire, Ohio, Nevada, and a few other states he reeled in back in 2000 are growing slimmer by the day.

I'd lay money on both if I didn't think Rove prefers to hold off capitalizing on that high drama until the GOP convention to really cash in on the 9/11 victims.

So here is my question, If the goverments of France and Germany are reading the polls, what are the chances they will withhold help or make the price of said help too high for Mr Bush, to help with a regime change here?
A former boss of mine is from Germany, from what she has told me there is a feeling bordering on hate for Mr Bush, and that many people feel they are the only ones who can save America for the Americans by helping to defeat Mr Bush
