That slime bag President is at it again. Honestly, how can anyone whom considers themselves to be gay support this idiot?

United Nations: U.S. Aligned With Iran in Anti-Gay Vote

QUOTE
LGBT) people. (Washington, D.C., January 25, 2006) - In a reversal of policy, the United States on Monday backed an Iranian initiative to deny United Nations consultative status to organizations working to protect the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. In a letter to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, a coalition of 39 organizations, led by the Human Rights Campaign, Human Rights Watch, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, called for an explanation of the vote which aligned the United States with governments that have long repressed the rights of sexual minorities. "This vote is an aggressive assault by the U.S. government on the right of sexual minorities to be heard," said Scott Long, director of the LGBT rights program at Human Rights Watch. "It is astonishing that the Bush administration would align itself with Sudan, China, Iran and Zimbabwe in a coalition of the homophobic."

In May 2005, the International Lesbian and Gay Association, which is based in Brussels, and the Danish gay rights group Landsforeningen for Bøsser og Lesbiske (LBL) applied for consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council. Consultative status is the only official means by which non-governmental organizations (NGOs) around the world can influence and participate in discussions among member states at the United Nations. Nearly 3,000 groups enjoy this status.

States opposed to the two groups' applications moved to have them summarily dismissed, an almost unprecedented move at the UN, where organizations are ordinarily allowed to state their cases. The U.S. abstained on a vote which would have allowed the debate to continue and the groups to be heard. It then voted to reject the applications.

"The United States recklessly ignored its own reporting proving the need for international support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "The State Department's 'Country Reports on Human Rights Practices' show severe human rights violations based on gender identity and sexual orientation occur around the world."

As the U.S. government acknowledged in its 2004 country report on Iran, Iranian law punishes homosexual conduct between men with the death penalty. Human Rights Watch has documented four cases of arrests, flogging, or execution of gay men in Iran since 2003. In its 2004 country report on Zimbabwe, the U.S. government noted President Robert Mugabe's public denouncement of homosexuals, blaming them for "Africa's ills." In the past, Mugabe has called gays and lesbians "people without rights" and "worse than dogs and pigs." The U.S. has reversed position since 2002, when it voted to support the International Lesbian and Gay Association's request to have its status reviewed. Officials gave no explanation for the change.

"It is deeply disturbing that, at the UN, the United States has shifted gears toward an aggressive stance against human rights for LGBT people," said Paula Ettelbrick, executive director of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission. "Unfortunately, denying LGBT groups a voice and a presence within the United Nations – the world's most important human rights institution – is fully in keeping with the U.S.'s assault on basic human rights principles worldwide."

In voting against the applications to the NGO committee, the U.S. was joined by Cameroon, China, Cuba, Iran, Pakistan, the Russian Federation, Senegal, Sudan, and Zimbabwe. Votes in favor of consultative status came from Chile, France, Germany, Peru, and Romania. Colombia, India, and Turkey abstained, while Côte d'Ivoire was absent.

"It is an absolute outrage that the United States has chosen to align itself with oppressive governments – all in an effort to smother the voices of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people around the world," said Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. "It is deeply disturbing that the self-proclaimed 'leader of the free world' will ally with bigots at the drop of a hat to advance the right wing's anti-gay agenda."

In addition to the Human Rights Campaign, Human Rights Watch, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the organizations signing the letter are:

Advocates for Youth Al-Fatiha Foundation for LGBT Muslims Allard K. Lowenstein International Human Rights Clinic, Yale Law School Amnesty International USA Center for Health and Gender Equity (CHANGE) Center for Women's Global Leadership Colombian Lesbian and Gay Association (COLEGA) Congregation Beth Simchat Torah Equality Now Family Care International Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Gay Men's Health Crisis Global Rights Immigration Equality International Women's Human Rights Clinic, City University of New York School of Law Ipas Jan Hus Church Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund Latino Commission on AIDS L.A. This entire Middle East fiasco almost makes me think there is a malevalent force at work to cause such unfortunate stances to be taken by so many countries critical to world peace at this time: USA, Iran, Palestine and even Israel.

How could we end up with fundamentalist theocracies taking over in three of the most war-hungry 'nations' on earth? And three have nukes.

Simple selfishness is the best explanation I see.
fantomas
He was against them before he was with them...hey, how bad is a nuke-seeking, anti-American terrorist supporting member of the Axis of Evil, really, when you can team up against the homos?

That's quite a list--Sudan, China, Iran and Zimbabwe. A heck of a job!

This just shows what an utter hypocrite this "president" is. Just when he is about to declare war against Iran, he can't resist getting one more jab in at the gays of America. How any gay man or woman could support this idiot is beyond me.

Gee, once again the Repug. party demonstrates that inclusion wins. rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

Libbies get their panties into a tizzy over this and would probably support war against Iran over this, but when it comes to their having the nuclear bomb, well...sanctions work! rolleyes.gif

Let's just invade them and get this over with.

Oh how the unfounded attacks never stop oh master of the tangental argument.

It's amazing how he could line up with the "Axis of Terror" on a human rights issue. It's mind boggling actually, as we are the self-proclaimed spreaders of democracy and liberty in this world. Guess that only counts for people who put peg A into slot B.

Yep - you are a pretty deep pile of it, and do like spreading it around some.

We'll give you that.

Sure must be a lot of pretty flowers around you.

The right-wingers are now gearing up for the anti-gay marriage amendment in the US Senate again. Colorado Senator Wayne Allard said a few days ago that it was on its way, and now, as Pam's House Blend is blogging, the American Family Association is asking its members to send 1 million letters, emails, etc. to Senators to demand that it be passed in early March!

Pam asks why none of the gay nonprofits seem to know about this, but my bet is that like with the Miers withdrawal and the winks about Alito, this is being carefully orchestrated sotto voce (except for Allard's blurting out about it) under the radar. Frist has already said it's coming up, and Warrantless Wiretapper even alluded to it in his State of the Union lie-fest.

So get ready, gay people, the Congressional Republicans are coming after us again!

Well it is time for the midterm elections.

It's always fascinating to me that a party that has historically made such a big deal of state's rights is pushing a federal marriage amendment, even though basic marriage laws are primarily addressed at the state level. Hmm, I'd say it's hypocritical, but then again I think everyone is a hypocrite to some degree in some aspect of life, so what's the point?

There is nothing I enjoy more than spreading brilliance, wisdom, and common sense. It is challenging, I admit, but it is a burden I accept with grace, humility, and pride. smile.gif

pity it's usually someone else's wisdom, brilliance and common sense by way of the cut and paste.....

I am honored that others happen to share my innate brilliance, wisdom, and common sense.

Back to reality, I wonder if Warrantless Wiretapper and Co. consulted Iran's president on when to relaunch the anti-gay marriage agenda bill? Looks like Fristie told the CPAC crazies that it was coming really soon. Like this summer!

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) spoke after Mehlman, and he promised that on June 5 he will bring to the floor a constitutional amendment to bar same-sex marriage, and pledged a May vote on eliminating the estate tax, items high on the conservative agenda.

Frist said the amendment is needed to protect the majority of Americans, whom he said oppose same-sex marriage, from \"the whims of a few activist judges\" who seek to \"override the commonsense of the American people.\" He added, \"When America's values are under attack, we need to act.\"
"America's values are under attack" because gays and lesbians want to marry? Words of hate courtesy of our very own Republican Senate majority leader.

Ms. de Blazer
I'm no fan of Dennis Miller, but during Equality Spring he did a line where he said something like there has been a new communication received from Osama bin Laden and Bush said "don't bother us, we're trying to ban gay marriage!"

When approval rating drops below 40%, when the majority think the war in Iraq was a "mistake" and badly handled, that the economy is badly handled, when domestic spying and emergency response are being justly trashed, look for a scapegoat. Used to be Jews, now it's gays.
fantomas
Mrs. de Blazer, do you think the Republicans in the Senate as a whole will go along with this? Even taking into account Snowe, Collins, Chafee, etc., I can't see some of the right-wingers going along with this extremely craven use of anti-gay legislation.

The best thing would be for it to explode--or Cheney--in the GOP leaders' faces, among their caucus and at the polls this November.
Ms. de Blazer
Fantomas, I sure wouldn't want to bet the farm, or even a seed, on what the pols might do! But in a way it's very safe to vote yes. A Constitutional amendment needs a big enough majority so it is unlikely to pass, so the Republicans and some Democrats can all vote for it, they won't have to worry about repercussions since it won't have enough votes to pass (we hope!), but they can show how moral they are while diverting attention from the real issues and problems.
