I'm still interested in the mystery of the WMD cache hidden in Iraq that we went to war over. rolleyes.gif

I saw G. Gordon Liddy and Chuck Colson soundbites about Felt and Deep Throat. Both reminded everyone that what Felt did was illegal and if he had concerns or even allegations about malfeasance in the White House, he should have convened a grand jury. Because what this country really needs is men convicted of subverting the Constitution telling us what is and is not proper conduct for law enforcement officers.

Now that the identity of Deep Throat is known, I hope someone asks Felt, if he believes what he did to be right and noble, why did he wait thirty years to announce himself....and deny being Deep Throat in the late-'70's when he was offered up as a possibility as well as maintaining in his book (The FBI Pyramid) that he met Bernstein just one time.

That is very unlikely. The man is 91 years old and evidently not entirely mentally competent at this point. According to his family, he has discussed it with them and the sense I get from the coverage so far is that he was entirely conflicted about the situation and not entirely sure he did the right thing.

I was only 17 and graduating high school in 1973 when I first got horny seeing this picture.

It still works.

Deep Throat, the movie did nothing for me. But Woodward was one of my first hardons.

Glad Mr Felt finally came out. Class of '73 owes him one. The Watergate chaingang - a sad legacy.

Damn! I was thinking it was Hal Holbrook.

Oh well.

Supposedly, when Ben Bradlee heard that Holbrook was cast as Deep Throat, he responded "Good, he looks like him."

I thought maybe DT was maybe MIB, since he's so well connected.

And that fits with jqueers statement about the man not being entirely mentally competant.

The conspiracy theorists had already determined Deep Throat's identity to be...Alexander Haig. Luckily, just because these four people have said it's actually Felt doesn't mean they have to change their theory around. Now it's just a BIGGER conspiracy.

I thought conspiracy theorists had decided on Pat Buchanan or one of John Dean's colleagues as Deep Throat since Haig was always so adament about not being the informant, and would question the integrity/honesty/legality of Throat's actions.

I hope Woodward, who was always closer to Deep Throat than Bernstein, will answer some of the still unanswered questions, such as how was Deep Throat able to inform Woodward about the existence of the (now famous) 18-minute gap in the tape in November of '73 when Felt had left the FBI in June of that year? Was Felt the sole informant Woodward called Deep Throat or were there others? Did Felt have an associate feeding him information to feed to Woodward?

Am I the only person who took his weatherworn copy of "All the President's Men" off the shelf and reread all 14 of the Deep Throat meetings?

Oddly, I was just over half done rereading the book when the announcement was made! I felt like someone had spoiled the ending for me. smile.gif

Former president Clinton thinks Felt did the right thing, which gives rise to the question " Is Mark Felt liable to any prosecution for his actions as 'Deep Throat'?"

Though I doubt the Bush administration would prosecute, it is probable that Clinton would have pardoned him. It is also interesting that Clinton 'misses an opportunity' to say George W. Bush is a "nice person" as he says his father is.

I think if Bill had said that W is a nice guy, that would have been a lie even he could not have said with a straight face! smile.gif

Sometimes it helps to see the program or read the transcript. The warming between Clinton and Bush has been well reported since the unveiling of Clinton's White House portrait.

QUOTE
KING: President Bush told us last night that he's very appreciative that you are non-critical of his son. Why are you non- critical of his son?

CLINTON: Well, I think he appreciates the way I disagree with him, too. I made up my mind when I left the White House, you know? And they've been pretty tough on me, the Republicans had. And I just kept on working with them.

And I made up my mind when I left the White House that I was going to figure President Bush out as a person. I always thought he was a very formidable political talent. I told all of our crowd in 2000, when I saw him give his first speech, that he was capable of winning, that he was an extraordinary talent.

And he'd never been particularly friendly to me, and I didn't blame him. I defeated his father, and I didn't think he should like me. You know, it didn't bother me a bit. But I just kind of kept working at it. And then he was so nice to me, and to Hillary, and to our families when we had the portrait unveiling.

KING: I'll never forget that.

CLINTON: It was really nice. And I said, you know, there's got to be a way for me to disagree with this man when I disagree with him, to support him when I can support him, and to express my personal goodwill toward him.

As I said at my library dedication, I was beginning to think, at the end of October, that I was the only person in America that liked both John Kerry and George Bush. But I think that's important.

I read your quote carefully and do not see where he said that GWB was a "nice person". He acknowledged that he has done some nice things, in particular toward Clinton. He suggests that GWB has overcome some faughts. A feat that Clinton of all people respects greatly.

Former Prez Clinton is a calculating, savvy politician who knows he has a limited amount of time to reverse the unfavorable ratings most political moderates and GOPers have of him --and indirectly of his wife-- in order to make inroads into that base for 2008.

Does anyone care if Bill likes George II? I just care that he's become civil again... and is acting more like an ex-Prez than someone intent on rewriting his scandal-ridden paragraph in history.
sportinlife
On that I will agree with you MiMatt. Clinton is indeed a savvy pol. Which is why I think he chose carefully when he said nice things about George W. Bush's specific actions without making the blanket endorsement of calling him a "nice person". Remember he IS the guy who parsed that two letter word nearly to meaninglessness.
