thank goodness! and it seems that each attempt to pass a ban, a few of the legislators who were against gay marriage gain some common sense and vote against the ban. perhaps this won't even make it to the ballot in 2008

Now I just need someone to marry! LOL

I'm right there with you.

To bring it back on topic, isn't it nice that people are realizing that the sky didn't fall, civilization didn't come to an end, and families were not harmed since gay marriage became legal in Mass. Hopefully it will spread...I won't wait with breath-held for it to spread to my great state though. I mean for cryin' out loud, we just got the lottery!

According to my sister, who lives where we grew up - in Western Mass, an area that tends to be more socially conservative than the Eastern part of the state (although Northampton, the city that loves the lesbians, is the local exception that proves the rule), when the local paper printed the first same-sex wedding announcement there were dozens of angry, anti-gay marriage letters to the editor. When the second one was printed, there were about 3. By the third wedding announcement, there were none. Now I am sure some people are still writing in and angry about the weddings, but the overall attitude seems to be - who cares?

Churches push 1-day blitz on marriage

QUOTE
Signature drive eyes '08 initiative
By Scott Helman, Globe Staff
September 20, 2005

Churches from various denominations opposed to gay marriage are preparing for what they are calling ''Protect Marriage Sunday\" on Oct. 2, a one-day signature-gathering blitz they expect will generate enough names to advance a 2008 ballot initiative banning same-sex weddings.

Catholics, Protestants from black and Hispanic communities, and members of other denominations will take part in a coordinated effort to collect tens of thousands of signatures at worship services in all corners of the state, organizers say.
....

The four Catholic bishops of Massachusetts have sent or will send letters to parishioners urging them to back the signature drive.

''As faithful citizens, we have a moral obligation to defend the truth, no matter how counter-cultural or unappreciated our convictions might be,\" Bishop George W. Coleman of Fall River wrote to parishioners in a Sept. 12 letter. ''The time is upon us to take a stand and to act, lovingly but firmly, to restore and defend the truth about marriage.\"

Seems the "moralists" behind the Massachusetts anti-gay-marriage ballot initiative drive have no shame about using deceptive and illegal tactics to gather signatures on their petitions, nor in recruiting children to be \"actively involved in trying to get signatures."

QUOTE
Several voters have complained to the state attorney general's office that they were tricked into signing the anti-gay-marriage initiative by independent contractors hired at the behest of the Massachusetts Food Association to gather signatures at area supermarkets for another petition... aimed at boosting the number of establishments now selling wine.

(The MFA) is tossing out hundreds of signatures gathered by six workers hired to fill petitions calling for special wine licenses, because those workers also collected signatures for the anti-gay marriage initiative.

-  Petition signers allegedly tricked, Worcester Telegram & Gazette, 10/4/05
The complaints have been widespread enough that the Massachusetts legislature's Joint Committee on Election Laws "has scheduled an Oct. 18 hearing to look into the accusations... responding to a public outcry about people being duped into putting their names on something they didn't support." (- Lawmakers to air complaints about marriage petition drive, Boston Globe, 10/5/05)

Props to the Massachusetts Food Association! Where do I sign?

Just to catch everybody up, 147,000 anti-marriage signatures (of 170,000 collected) have been certified by town clerks and submitted to the Massachusetts Secretary of State, enough for the anti-equality petition to proceed to the next step. The language of the anti-gay constitutional amendment has to be approved by 50 of our 200 legislators in two consecutive years before it can appear on the ballot in 2008.

Meanwhile, online polls are pretty much meaningless, but it's always nice when your side wins... Do you think a question on banning gay marriage should be on the (Massachusetts) ballot?
