my BF needs to lose a few pounds, according to his doctor. He has some blood pressure issues and has had a procedure to stop some abnormal heart rhythms. He's healthy, but we have trouble finding things he can do to drop the 10-15 pounds.
I try to cook healthy for him, but if he eats too much of it, hey, a calorie is a calorie.
there's one other problem. he broke his knee playing ball over 10 years ago. after a few surgeries, the doc decided to totally remove the knee cap, no knee replacement. (yeah, it doesn't sound right to me either.) The point is that running is not an option.
Ideas? I'm thinking weights (which we have) and stationary bike. (I have an elliptical runner)

Swimming in the pool - and support from you, which sounds like it's already happening if you're cooking smartly for him. Watch the frog kick, though'; w/o a knee cap it may cause problems. Good luck to the two of you!

No one can force him to do something he doesnt want to do. If he needs a trainer they will need to get information from the doctor. Its simple if he wants he just needs to burn calories with any type of exercise, and more than he is taking in, and thats not happening. Biking or swimming wont be hard on the knees.

Keltic63, you guys should join a gym together. There are many things you could do there that would'nt hurt the knee and probably a trainer who could really help. I love going to the gym. It is a great place for camaraderie and support. It just takes getting past the first two or three weeks till you get used to it. Lifting weights will really help I think and you guys will have fun together.

I'm no doctor nor do I have a background in knee injuries/surgeries to offer advice about working out at the gym. I can offer my opinions, however, about a diet plan that I believe that is the best for everybody. And that is Weight Watchers. There have been many fads over the years in terms of diet plans. But most have come and gone. My ex did Weight Watchers and was pleased w/ the results. He also went to the gym of course. But when he discussed his desires w/ his doc about going on a diet his doc highly recommended Weight Watchers too. It's the safest and healthiest way to lose weight. You get to eat what you like (not like some of the horrible tasting frozen dinners), but in the right amount of portions. You may need to eat/drink a lower fat content of a speific product that you enjoy. Also, you're able to have one of their counselors devise a plan just for you based upon your dietary needs & goals. Goodluck.

I say water must become your BF's best friend! Swimming in it and DRINKING it!!Swimming because of the low impact on his joints. Also if it is possible, cut out the late night snacks altogether. They say you should drink 8 glasses of water a day,I say 12,this will also help lower his blood pressure.I have lost 100 LBS since August 1,2004.
