Does anyone else suffer from post-nasal drip?
I was told to rinse my nostrils out with warm water containing 1/3 tsp. of salt. This is easier said than done!I guess this is another one of those problems that seems more prone to the state of Michigan!!
Oops,I think I should have put this in the "fitness and health" category.

Well Cuz, I had 3 reactions to your post:
1)Eeeeewwwwww, get a nose job
2) hope you're a bottom, as I'd hate to have your nose dripping on someone
3)How the hell do you rinse your nose????

If the only thing your doctor suggested was to rinse your nose (which you would do with a nasal sprayer by the way), then he is quite the hack of an MD. Ask a doctor about Duratuss, a prescription medication. Works wonders for me. There is also a generic form of the drug and that works just as well.
J eddie
My doctor did not suggest that.I think that Duratuss would counteract some other medications that I am taking, hence the homeopathic method.

Saline solution is hightly antibacterial. You can put some organic aloe juice in the saline or some grapefruit seed extract. The grapefruit seed extract (GSE) should be well diluted. We are talking drops here cuz this is one of the most powerful antibacterials known to man. Some use a nettie pot. Some prefer the bulb that is also used to squirt in your ears. If your sinuses are not open enough for a gravity fed nettie pot, than a squeezed bulb may get the saline further into the mess in your head. It is also nice if the solution is warm.

I definitely would not risk side effect of drug that is only treating a symptom.
J eddie
Thank you Erik.I think the nettie pot thing might be a tad difficult but I may try the saline rinse.I do intend to talk to my doctor first.I still take medication for high blood pressure even though with the diet modification/weight loss my bp is normal.I also am presently taking some cholesterol meds. but hopefully not much longer. It seems like I go through this almost every autumn/winter.It must be from staying indoors more often.I think I really need a good husband to take care of me. tongue.gif Oh well! That's probably why my cousin "swiminbuff" is so spoiled!

Eddie: you can get saline nasal spray in premixed/measured spray containers at drug and grocery stores. Kroger, e.g., has its own brand that is relatively inexpensive and very easy to use. I started using it a couple of months ago with very good effect. It does a good job of both cleansing and hydrating the sinuses.

Thanks jockpop!
My friend was telling me about a brand called "Ocean" I just may check it out even though I think a Kroger brand may be less expensive. We'll see.
jockpop
Ocean is good, but more expensive than Kroger -- which has worked perfectly well for me.
J eddie
Well then, upon your recommendation,I will try it!Thanks again!

An article in the NYTimes (which I won't link since it requires registration) relates the latest evidence that the cold can "cause" a cold, gathered by the Common Cold Centre in Wales. They have a theory stated in their General Common Cold Information about why:
QUOTE
Can a chill cause a cold?

There is no scientific evidence that chilling the body causes an increased susceptibility to infection or an increase in the severity of symptoms. However there is so much belief in the idea that chilling can cause a cold that it is possible that there may be a link between chilling and colds that has not yet been mimicked by scientists under laboratory conditions. One theory is that chilling of the body surface causes a pronounced constriction of blood vessels in the nose and that this may lower our resistance to infection. The idea is that when colds are circulating in the community many persons may be infected with a virus but not show symptoms. The chilling of the body surface then lowers resistance to infection in the nose and aids the viral infection. In this case the person has not caught a cold by chilling but activated a latent or sub-clinical infection that was already present in the nose.
Those asymtomatic cold virus cariers may also be the reason for many sinus problems IMO. Of course there are many other possibilities like polution, common microscopic particles or off-gases in houses, etc. etc.

But this new evidence is big progress IMO.

I don't think I mentioned it but my post nasal drip was a symptom of a sinus infection.
SCTrojan
eddiecat,

I have had sinus infections. The post nasal drip is ANNOYING.

I once had a sinus drainage done & 1) it was not pretty and 2) it was painful as hell! The doctor 1st tried to prescribe somewhat strong antibiotics, but to no avail. That's why I had the drainage done. The only thing enjoyable was that I was prescirbed codeine in order to take it right b4 the procedure. Thank God he didn't prescribe more of those because I would have been hooked...Okay, back to the topic...Since then, however, I usually get a z-pack (spelling?) when I get an infection. It really helps my sinuses & the meds have an immediate effect. I start feeling my sinuses opening & clearing up within a 1/2 hour after I take the 1st dosage. Anyway...I feel your pain. Just wanted to share my Rx remedies for this problem.

Hi SCTrojan,
Yes,I too have experienced the joys of codeine way back in high school to help me battle pneumonia.Such a relaxing feeling. These days after a dosage of antibiotics and something called guifonex (sp?) everything is much better.I have been using Flonase even though it is very difficult for me to get used to a nasal spray.

I had nasal surgery years ago. It helped some, but I've had sinus problems for years. I highly recommend the sinus rinse therapy as an allergist suggested to me. It's good to continue it as a preventive measure. I use the bulb type with packets of pre-measured mixture of saline and baking soda (and tepid water). The secret to keeping the rinse solution from going down your throat is to pant or sound out hah! hah! hah! the whole time your doing it. (They don't tell you that on the instructions...my Dr. gave that tip.)

The spray Ocean stuff is really more for hydrating, but not rinsing out what needs to be out of there. You can find what I use on SinusRinse.com as I think it's a lot easier and more convenient than the netti pots.

Feel better.
J eddie
Oh,I've been feeling much better, thanks.I really don't think I was made to handle Winter and Michigan is not the ideal place for someone with bad sinuses.I do much better in the summmer.
