I have a question for you guys. I just started working out for the first time in my life last week. I decided that I needed to change for the better. I'm 22 years old and have a pretty big gut (beer belly if you will) so I needed to change that and get in shape. My goal is to run a 10K event next year.

So I'm cool with Cardio and that's not a problem. But it's the weight training that I'm troubled.

I have a workout program that one of the workers at the gym I'm at, set up for me. But my question is, how long should I wait in between sets. And then how long should I wait before going to the next machine?

This really is something you need to discuss w/ a trainer. It depends if are you trying to lean out or adding mass or strength training.

It also depends on you: some people like to slam through a workout, others take their time - there's not a lot of difference in the end result, especially when you're starting out.

Speed of motion is also an issue: in my sport (ski racing), where speed is an issue, we try to emphasize explosive motion in weight training.

As a beginner though, take it easy for a while until the muscles get used to the workload. A good rule-of-thumb would be to rest enough between each set to get the heartrate down to a resting pulse (120?) - and the same between moving to another exercise, perhaps even a bit more.

Enigma...I'm the same like you
I'm 24 and have a gut..and I'm trying to change that and do excerise...but unlike you...everytime I want to do excerise I get all lazy and dont do it...I used to jog every now and then but I stop...I know I should get in the habit of doing that again and doing sit-ups and push-ups because its all about being and looking healhty you know.

its just not easy guys...you have to be so focus and deciated to change and right now my eating habits are bad...I eat large portions of food and I know I need to cut that down...eat more fruits and drink more water

I'm a work in progress I guess... smile.gif

You do know, Gilbert, that this is not a temporary fix. You have to do this for you and no one else.

YOu have to find your own motivation when you work out whether it is a picutre of what you want to look like or a friend to pump you up or just the guys you see around you. That can motivate you.

You do know that it takes time to get to your goals. YOu just need to focus and keep your eyes on what you want out of working out.

It is worth it in the end.
