Former Raider Barret Robbins is in critical condition after being shot by Miami Beach police officers during a burglary attempt. This took place Saturday night. I wonder if he had stopped taking his medication for depression? When he missed the Super Bowl due to depression, teammates and several commentators mocked him rather than try to understand what living with that particular disease is like.

Robbins, still in a Miami trauma center, faces a number of charges for the Saturday night incident. Most serious are are three counts of felony attempted murder. His lawyer appears set to plead insanity, saying that Robbins' actions indicate he didn't know right from wrong. Whatever his punishment, I hope it includes ongoing psychological help and getting him, back on his medicine for his bipolar disorder.

It would certainly seem that an insanity plea would work, based on his past history. But if he doesn't have these problems when he takes his medication, and he continues to stop taking his medication, then shouldn't he be held accountable?

Actually Joe, "insanity" is a legal defense that basically means you were so mentally ill that you could not understand what you were doing. Merely having a mental illness is not enough to claim the insanity defense. For most forms of basic depression/unipolar affective disorder the insanity defense cannot hold - sufferers may be in great psychological distress, but they still know right from wrong. Bipolar affective disorder, or manic depression, can get so bad the individual loses control, but even that is, as I remember my college psych, relatively rare.

Plus wouldn't it factor in if he knowingly and willingly stopped taking his medication? If he was fully aware of what would happen if he stopped taking them but did so anyway, insanity might be a reach.

The estranged wife of Barret Robbins
was interviewed by Andrea Kremer. The piece will air tonight on Sportscenter. She says he "was just lost" and that he probably didn't even realize he was in Miami the night of the incident, based on how he acted previously.
QUOTE
\"[He has a] strap across his chest. Both of his legs are in runners to keep him immobile, so he doesn't do any more damage to his spine,\" Marisa Robbins, fighting back tears, told Kremer. \"Tubes, ventilator … Standing there looking at him, it doesn't look like he's gonna live.\"
The day after Barret Robbins' altercation with police, Marisa Robbins told ESPN: \"Barret was shot in the chest. There was a hole in his heart that was surgically repaired. A bullet ripped through and punctured his lung.\"

The downward spiral of Barret Robbins continues.
He was arrested on marijuana possession charges.
