Well, if you don't want to travel alone--something I often enjoy greatly--I bet there are a bunch of folks here who'd be more than happy to have you as a travelling companion.

April is very end of the "high season" in PV, as the rainy period starts in May, so you should be okay. But then you just never know... when we were there for our annual trip the first week of February, it rained two days and was cloudy every other day of the week, which is highly unusual that time of year. I have some good suggestions for an affordable beach-front condo building in the heart of the old town, which is the gay-friendly part of town. It's a few blocks down from the gay beach. I can hook you up with the owner of several condo units in that building if you'd like. I highly recommend that approach rather than a hotel, unless you have your heart set on staying in the gay hotel.

Sorry to hear that...if you've already paid for part or all of it I hope you get your money back or, as Adam said, find someone else to make the trip. And if you're still looking to travel somewhere, might I recommend L.A. in August? I might be there myself...

Illini, to which part of Italy were you going? I've often told my better half that I want to go to Italy and try to find my Great-grandfather's village. Would also love to do a cooking school over there as well.
If you really want to go...go. I bet you could find someone on this board to go with you. I happen to know a nice, handsome, single Tiger that loves to travel. (pimping by AU brethren!)

On the other hand, why not go with a fellow alum? Uno chi parla un po d'italiano! Besides, swimmers travel well together! wink
Whoever goes to Italy, make sure you spend some time in Genova and along the coast between there and Pisa. Squisito!

Correct! Just got back from there in Feb, and it was gorgeous! I loved Santa Margherita! Portifino was a letdown, because they have turned all of those cute shops into basically an upscale shopping mall, with stores like Armani, Hermes, Gucci, etc. I can get all of those same things at the store I work at for a lot cheaper than they were selling them for over there.

Looks like there may be a
de facto Outsports mini-convention down here in Key West over Memorial Day weekend. I've been in contact with two couples who are coming down that weekend--add me and that's five.
I think we're just one Gator-loving lesbian away from having a quorum!
Anybody else wanna come join the party? Yes, Herr Tiggee, even you too.

We just got back from South Beach and Key West. Never been to either place; never want to go back to SB, too crowded, noisy, too much traffic. Key West, on the other hand, was fabulous. Think I could live there, except for the fact that a "cute Conch cottage" is $750K, and the highest paying jobs are in the service industry (ie, hourly plus tips).
Off to our first trip to Hawaii in October. Any suggestions where to go or not go?

Run, Doubtless you've heard the expression "Maui is best," but don't overlook Honolulu as some are tempted to. The nightlife is the most vibrant there and it's not that hard at all to eschew the touristy parts for quieter areas. Word to the wise: "oceanfront room" sounds nice, but the sound doesn't stop for light sleepers who can find the waves deafening at 3 a.m. Make sure you know what you're getting into before you go.
My favorite part about my last HA trip? Waking up at 6 a.m. to watch the MI-OSU Game and then body surfing on Maui the rest of the day!

Anyone have any recommendations on things to do in Cancun / Mayan Riviera, Mexico. Am heading there for a week at end of April. Any fellow travellers going there at same time or have any tips from prior visits to the area?

You can do just about anything you want to do in Cancun really. If you want to see the real Cancun, the one that is not so Americanized, go to Cancun City which is just next door to the hotel zone. Other than that, the big focus for me and my ex was to see as many Mayan ruins as possible, and thats what we did. Chichen-Itza was incredible. Stayed at one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at right next door to it. The Mayaland Hotel. Wow. What a place!! Then drove further down the coast and went to Tulum, right next to the ocean. Incredible too, and incredibly hot, course we went in August, so what do you expect? Anything else, feel free to pm me. Have fun!

I just spent a week in the Mayan Riviera. We stayed in Playa Del Carmen, which was great. Here are some tips:
- Go to Tulum. The ruins are beautiful and the best snorkeling in the area (outside of Cozumel) is right off the beach there (though it's still not great).
- If you scuba dive, be SURE to ask to be taken to "Tortugas." You'll see tons of sea turtles and they are the coolest thing I've ever seen while diving. The best diving overall is off of Cozumel.
- There is NO need to go to the gay bar in Playa Del Carmen. It's terrible. Instead, go to Deseo, a hotel/bar that is the hottest spot in town (most of the cruiseship people don't know about it).
- Fifth Avenue in Playa is the hottest spot outside of Cancun. 100% Natural is a great spot for breakfast; Limones has good desserts (the flambes are great); and a one-hour massage at the spa there is only $55.
- The closest thing to a gay beach there is a 30-40 minute walk up the beach from Coco Reef Beach Club. Most of the guys will be nude - and you'll know it when you happen upon it.
- Outside of that, "Mamitas" is the beach to be at in Playa.
- Unless you're going to scuba dive or snorkel, Cozumel is a waste of time.
I hope this helps!

We've been to Cancun several times because my partner is a hotel whore. We stayed at the Ritz-Carlton which was an incredible experience. We went in September and got great rates because of the impending hurricane season. We went to downtown Cancun several times and ate at El Pescador a few times which was great. Then, we went to a place called La Habitchuala(sp). It was on a narrow street and you walked through a little court yard into double mahogany doors and a nice little bar. Then for dinner, they took you through the restaurant and it opened into this beautiful walled courtyard with lush plants, large plantation style wrought-iron chairs and tables and lit incredible. Then meal was fantastic. I highly recommend it.
If you stay at the Ritz, be sure and bring some nice dress clothes so you can eat at the overpriced nice restaurant. Also, if you drink like fish as we do, get the upgrade to the club level so your alcohol is included while you are in the club level.

A friend of mine and his BF went there Jan. '04 and they had nothing but praise. Wish I could remember more specifics, though.
As for myself: Prague & Budapest in late May-early June.
