Is there a way for a social networking site to "jump the shark? I think Facebook has. It's latest update sucks.

It doesn't load up the same on Firefox. I have to use Internet Explorer for Facebook. Firefox for everything else I view.

I also have trouble uploading pics or uploading to existing albums.

Why do they try to fix what doesn't need fixing?
millerbeach
I agree. Too bad they can't leave good enough alone. I've only been on it for about a year and a half, and it has undergone three major changes, none of which I like. It's almost like when your grocery store decides to rearrange everything, leaving you lost for a few weeks. I'm also sick of people who treat Facebook as if it were their own blog. Do I really want to know what you are doing/thinking/planning every minute of your life? No.

I don't have any problems with Facebook on Firefox, specifically. I have problems at times with Facebook not working properly, getting error messages and such when you try to comment or post something. I don't know for sure if it's a Firefox issue because I don't use anything else, but I don't think those problems are caused by Firefox.
Texas Daytripper
I fixed it. I fixed it. I can see Facebook using Firefox again.

There's a view pull down menu on the tool bar. Then there's a zoom option. I just kept zooming and now it's normal again. Previously it was all scrunched in the middle. I could barely read it.

Wow, if only I can figure out the problems with uploading pics.

Oh lord, a coworker has facebooked me. Should I just ignore his request? I'm not out at work and don't want him to know that I'm gay. I also don't want to have to go changing everything (posts, pictures and stuff).

I've got the same problem at work with some people - I just give them the line about "not mixing work and pleasure"..... dry.gif
millerbeach
Man, am I glad I am out. I never even thought about that. I'd just ignore, unless they pester you to friend them. Or set up another account, which is more "business".

You could open one Facebook account for work and another for pleasure.

That's what a few of my friends do. One is under their real name, and is for certain family/friends/coworkers that they want to keep separate. The other is under a pseudonym, and they use that for everything else. So, Aaron, you could ignore that Facebook friend request, change your name on that account now to something else, and then create another Facebook account if you so desire.

Or if you don't want to have two separate accounts, you can also block that specific person, and then change your Facebook privacy settings so that you're not searchable any more. That way no one else could find you and request to be your friend. You would have to send a friend request to them first.
Texas Daytripper
I ignored the request and my coworker hasn't said anything about it. It's a small company, so pretty much everything is known about me but my sexual orientation.

Ironically, I attended my first "Facebook Wedding" this weekend. A very swanky affair, at The Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago...I'd say she did pretty good! They were old high school friends and reconnected about a year ago...all because of Facebook. It's amazing! biggrin.gif

I actually looked that up. The fan page started in December 2009... and already has 17,348 fans and 3,789 fan photos! Who knew?

The Outsports fan page has, by comparison, 1,962 fans.

The NBA announced that its Twitter feed had surpassed 2 million followers making it number one among the major sports leagues. And combined, the "the official NBA feed, all 30 NBA team feeds, and more than 165 NBA player feeds have accumulated more than 23 million followers across Twitter."

By comparison, (as of now) the NFL has over 1.6 million followers, MLB has less than a million, the NHL has just over 400,000, the WNBA has over 170,000, the PGA Tour has over 29,000, the ATP World Tour men's tennis has over 25,000, NASCAR has over 22,000, and Major League Soccer (MLS) has less than 6,000.

Found out that @WoodysCanada is following me on Twitter. I though, Wow, Toronto's preeminent gay bar Woodys is following little old me. But it turns out WoodysCanada is actually a fruit-flavored vodka cooler. Why would they be following me, a person who doesn't drink alcohol? Bah!
Joe in Philly
Perhaps based on something you tweeted. You do seem to go on about Canada a lot. tongue.gif Or it's based on your location in your profile or some combination. I'm being followed by some Philly-based places, not all of which I've visited or tweeted about. Lately, though, I'm most happy by the fact that I started following the Scissor Sisters' official Twitter feed -- after I saw them at a free mini-concert radio broadcast, but also unfortunately after they had a contest to give away free passes to their show in Phila. that night -- and now they're following me back! I want more celebrities to follow me back. (Hell, I want more people in general to follow me but that's another story...)

Yes, sometimes that happens. Recently I tweeted about seeing the "worker bees" at TIFF (Toronto Int'l Film Festival) setting up the new (temporary) box office... and was soon being followed by the Twitter feed of a website for people interested in (honey) bees. I one time had the word "skateboard" in a Tweet and was then followed by some skateboard shop in California.

I don't think I have any celebrities following me--although Barack Obama was following me and maybe still is. wink.gif Recently I've picked up a couple of fringe mayoral candidates in Toronto (such as @PhilforMayor), but since I don't technically live in Toronto I couldn't vote for him even if I wanted to. Oh, the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa is following me. And Dave Pallone, the gay ex-MLB umpire. And Outsports. And somebody caled @JoeInPhilly. Do you know him?

The Advocate has a bit on The Most Popular Gays on Twitter. Some of the top gays: Chris Cofler (#15),* Neil Patrick Harris (#10), Suze Orman (#9), Ricky Martin (#6), Rachel Maddow (#4), Ellen Degeneres (#1).

Samantha Ronson at #5? WTF??? Surprised Rosie O'Donnell isn't on the list, assuming she's on Twitter.
Joe in Philly
I've never seen anyone re-tweet Rosie, so I'm guessing she's not on Twitter yet.

That Advocate bit mentions Lady Gaga being #1 overall -- if they're putting Lindsay Lohan on that list, shouldn't Gaga be number one on it ahead of Ellen? She was listed as "bisexual musician" when she spoke at the Equality March last fall.

It's amazing how a reply to a Facebook status can come between friends. And whatever happened to talking it out and working out your differences?
millerbeach
Aaron, I think it may have something to do with non-verbal communication, which we take for granted in a face-to-face situation. On Facebook, et al, we are reduced to only the keyboard as the method of communication. It makes a huge difference when you state something in person as opposed to typing it. Nonverbal face cues, body language, intensity...all easily conveyed in person, not so much via the keyboard. Although, it is mighty convenient when it's 3 AM and you are horny as hell....LOL! laugh.gif laugh.gif

Cesar Milan (The Dog Whisperer) just posted a pic of himself with Mark Zuckerberg and Zuckerberg's dog. The Dog Whisperer writes "So enjoyed meeting Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla today and helping them with their little "Beast." Today on FB, as an April Fools joke, I changed my status from "single" to "In a Relationship". It was amazing at the number of responses I got. Most congratulated me and wished me the best. One asked who the lucky girl was. Funny, how little someone knows me.

Anyway, I finally confessed and they all thought it was a good joke. A lot want me to be happy and find that perfect someone. I hope it does happen and I don't have to "cry wolf".

The San Francisco Giants are hosting the "Cody & Keenan" Social Media Fundraiser Night* on May 25th. Keenan Cahill is supposedly some kind of YouTube star and has done a lip syncing video with Cody Ross and Brian Wilson--here it is.

*Just noticing that the Giants have a lot of community nights, including for Japanese, Korean, Italian, Irish, Chinese, Filipino and Jewish people, nights for autism, breast cancer and celiac disease (I have no idea what that is), nights supporting firefighters, healthcare workers and law enforcement officers, boy scouts and girl scouts, nights for single people and LGBT people, union workers, Grateful Dead fans, college students, Star Wars fans... the list is seemingly endless.
millerbeach
Celiac disease is a violent allergy to wheat and wheat products. We had a co-worker who was misdiagnosed for a while...first, ulsers, then cancer....it was hardly heard-of a decade ago. Those who have it are fine as long as they avoid wheat. Nice that the SFG reach out to the community, in diverse ways.

I really can't stand those people that complain about what others post on FB.

I was constantly criticized about posting music lyrics as my status.

Excuse me but the status box does ask "what's on your mind?"

Sometimes a song gets in your head or it's speaks to what you're going through, so I post the lyrics. So shoot me or delete me - which he did.

millerbeach
...at least you have a song in your heart and a smile on your face! biggrin.gif Who cares what others say...it's Facebook...not rocket science. It is suppose to be fun....not a chore...you know, kinda like sex! cool.gif

No, but seriously. There are times I just get a blank page and then other times I get a few tweets. It's really annoying.

When I log out and try to log in, the Tweeter main page, says I need to enable Javascript. Mine is enabled.

This is really getting frustrating. It all started when a new version of FireFox was uploaded.

I hate the new Facebook layout and now I hate all the constant posts about how FB will be charging for their site.

Why couldn't Mark and his engineers leave well enough alone? I joined Google+ and it's really boring at this time.

I have to add, that I am glad that this discussion board format has not changed much over the years. I like it just the way it is.
Joe in Philly
The people who keep spreading the phony info that Facebook is going to start charging are just plain stupid. If Facebook ever decides to charge, it'll become known without these dopes who want to spread this false info. They'll announce it themselves.

I'm not happy with the FB changes but haven't joined Google+ because I don't need another Facebook when I have one already.

I like Twitter more. If everyone I knew would use Twitter, I'd delete Facebook. But some of them are FB only.

I hear ya. I've got some FB friends who seem to have way too much time on their hands, and post 20+ posts a day. Someone with 2,000 friends must have at least 100 friends like that. How can anyone keep up with that?
