Just a reminder for those of us who observe daylight savings time to roll your clocks back one hour tonight before going to bed. Another hour for whatever! biggrin.gif

Am I crazy?

Didn't congress decide to add a couple of weeks onto DLSP????

NJ
Maddog
I was thinking that too NJ but I then found this...

This year, Congress voted to extend daylight time by four weeks starting in 2007, from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.

This of course doesn't mean you're NOT crazy. biggrin.gif

If I were JIP, I might come here and remind you that there's no such thing as "Daylight Savings Time." wink

As usual, Canada probably won't have much choice but to follow the US lead on the extension of DST in '07, although there is not much enthusiasm for it here. It wasn't that long ago the US decided to start DST in early April instead of late April, and now they want to begin it in early March? It's still bloody freezing here at that time of year, so I don't think people are going to get outside to 'enjoy' that extra hour of daylight. And we will just use more electricity when they get up in the morning, as it will be darker. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me...

As a matter of interest, the province of Saskatchewan does not switch to Daylight Saving Time, staying on Standard Time year round, the only jurisdiction in Canada to do so. Are there any states that don't make the switch?

Arizona doesn't switch, and parts of Indiana don't switch either, but not the whole state. I also don't think Alaska switches but I'm not sure about that.

hawaii doesn't switch.

Come mid-December, the sun will set at Van Buren and some neighboring towns as early as 3:42 p.m., according to the U.S. Naval Observatory. That's before most people get home from work and many children get home from school. Heck, soap operas are still on TV at that hour.

Daylight-saving time is serious business in Maine.

Six months ago, state legislators introduced a bill proposing that Mainers vote on whether to move from the Eastern time zone to the Atlantic time zone. That would align the state with the Canadian Maritime Provinces and accomplish the same thing as staying in the Eastern time zone and extending daylight time year-round.

Alaska switches, but Hawaii doesn't.

Daylight Savings Time SUCKS! Why can't we just be on standard time all year long?
wilsew
Ditto!
gmginsfo
Au contraire! I liked how things were in '74 when we were on DST year-round.

Seriously though, some thought should be given to realigning the time zones in light of current demographics. We've seen some of that with the bill just signed into law allowing for local option, but a larger readjustment is in order. The last time the boundaries were changed was in the 1880s to accomodate railroad schedules. We've come along way since the steam locomotive.

The Energy savings for DST are huge. With DST we save just over 15% of the required total for electrical energy... We got DST back in the 70's as a conservation measure: and it worked incredibly well.

Typical American bully! Softwood lumber, Hudson's Bay Company, Tim Horton's and now tinkering with Daylight Saving Time...where does it end?? Will the Stanley Cup's permanent home and the Hockey Hall of Fame be relocated to Philadelphia? eek! biggrin.gif

Further to the discussion about time zones and DST, the province of Newfoundland tried 'double' daylight savings a few years back, but I don't think it went over very well and was abandoned the next year, as it put the province way out of sync with the rest of North America.

Newfoundland already has its own unique time zone, a half-hour ahead of Atlantic time and 1.5 hours ahead of the Eastern time zone. It is closer in distance and time (3.5 hours behind) to UK than it is to the west coast of Canada (4.5 hours ahead). In the US, I believe some of the furthest Aleutian Islands are so far 'west' they are actually 'east', ie on the other side of Longitude 180 or the International Date Line.

Interesting comment I heard yesterday about DST...apparently business profits are higher as people are more likely to shop and $pend during daylight hours. So it's really all about money! Thus I'm surprised the US hasn't gone even further...why not extend DST to include the Christmas shopping season? biggrin.gif

Its not the daylight savings that sucks. I don't mind the extra hour of sleep.

What REALLY REALLY sucks is switching back in April, when I have to get up 1 hour earlier.
shawnq
Maybe it's because I rarely go to sleep at the same time any night of the week, but I am always amazed at how upset people get from missing one hour of sleep once a year.

That said, I hate that it will be dark when I leave work today.

You can keep the Hall of Fame. Don't want it to look like we're greedy. wink

Canadians and Americans, set your clocks ahead one hour tonight (except if you live in Saskatchewan, and a few of the states, I think). Since we will now have EIGHT MONTHS of Daylight Saving Time, in effect it has become the new norm or 'standard'. What we call 'Standard Time' should be re-named 'Daylight Losing Time' or some such thing! Personally, I think the whole thing is pointless, but there are experts who claim we will save a huge amount of energy...

Trivia tidbit: Chris Martin, singer for the British band Coldplay and husband of Gwyneth Paltrow, is the great-great-grandson of William Willett, the inventor of Daylight Saving Time. Appropriately, his group won a Grammy award for "Clocks" in 2004.

unless you stay awake during the time switch, if you go to sleep after the spring forward, then you don't lose that hour of sleep

Hi Kids,
Just a reminder to turn the clocks ahead Sunday. Yes, March 11th is daylight savings time, so we lose an hour - spring ahead.
Talk to you later.
Love,
Mom
