I have this fantasy about not living in the Midwest anymore during the winters after I retire. I am seriously considering going to South Padre Island this fall and looking at buying a condo or something. My plan is to rent it until I retire and then spend my winters there.
So my questions are
1. How feasible is that plan and has anyone done anything similar?
2. What can people tell me about South Padre Island?
Thanks

I can't say I've ever been to South Padre Island, but my suggestion would be to look in a more long term situation. Now I could be dead wrong, but it seems that South Padre is just gonna be an out-dated spring break place within a stretch of time.
Have you thought about east coast? Places like Hilton Head, around the Charleston area (Kiawah/Isle of Palms), etc.......I just do not see losing popularity in the long term, although they are probably a little pricier as well.

A couple of years ago, the only bridge into and out of South Padre was closed when part of it collapsed after a barge crashed into it. People were stranded on the island until a ferry service was brought in to transport people.
