Thought maybe we could use a new, separate thread for the big game! Lets discuss all the week long build-up, make predictions, trash talk-anything Super Bowl related.

I'm really torn as to who to root for. There are so many things to like about the Bucs (Chucky, Ronde, Alstott, Jurevicius) but I really don't want Warren Sapp to get a ring. As for the Raiders, I've never been a fan, though I love Gannon, Rice, Brown and admire what Callahan did stepping in.

Will Gruden's familarity with the Raiders help the Bucs? Will the Raiders familiarity with Chucky help them? Or will they cancel each other out?
William1865
I watch the Super Bowl every year, but this is the first year I've been really excited about it. I've been a Tampa Bay fan since I was a kid - way back when they had the cool orangish/reddish and white uniforms (I liked them, anyway), and way back when my high school football team probably could have beaten them. I always had faith that one day the Bucs would hit the big time, and finally my dedication has been rewarded. And my team's got a hottie for a coach, too. What a country. Go Bucs. I'm saying Bucs win 17-14. Just a completely random guess that is subject to change, depending on the outcome of the game.
BigBucBoy
of course, I'm the most biased person here to add my 10 cents. . . but will anyway. I've been a big time buc fan since I was 14 back in 79. If any of you are typically for the underdog or little guy, you should def. side with Tampa and their LONG suffering fans and franchise.(but only for this game since we're quickly seeing many bandwagon fans jump on as often happens with winners!!) The Bucs have some of the most devoted fans around. . can you see the Raider fans enduring 14 years of consecutive horrific losing seasons??? The time has come for Tampa to bury their often sorry past and join the elite NFL history books (in a postive way!). Oakland franchise has had their sunshine moments over the years. . . . and with an ass**** owner that defies so much of what the NFL stands for, who intheir right mind would want him to take that championship trophy from the Commish Tagliabue, the gentleman DAvis has seen more often in court than anywhere else?????? Don't get me going here. . . I'm busy packing for an early flight to San Diego in the morning. GO BUCS!!!!!!

Watch out residents of Tampa/St. Pete: Car crashes climb by 40% in the hours following a Super Bowl "with the surge highest in the losing team's territory, perhaps because heartbroken fans are obsessing over the defeat and not concentrating on their driving, researchers say.

In the first study to quantify the problem, researchers at the University of Toronto in Canada examined U.S. accident data from the last 27 Super Bowls.

They found both fatal and nonfatal crashes increase after the football game, causing an average of seven additional deaths and 600 extra injuries.

"We think that it may be alcohol and fatigue and inattention, and in particular the sort of what-if conjectures and Monday morning quarterbacking that occurs" after one's team loses, said Dr. Donald A. Redelmeier.

The study was reported in today's New England Journal of Medicine.

Feel like I'm in the same boat as you, George. An inveterate rooter for the underdog, my heart keeps sayin' to root for the Bucs. But my head's sayin' the Raiders are gonna take it. Hate Al Davis, hate the psycho fans (although, in their defense, they've had to live with the very real threat that the team would desert at ANY time & have still stayed "rabidly" loyal), but feel very good about the maturity (read: "Hey, I'm gettin' up there myself") of the players. On the other hand ... Tampa's coach knows those same players inside out, which could give the Bucs the edge. And yet...

We'll see whether the gut or the heart wins out on Sunday. Long as it's a good game, guess I win either way (except in the Pick 'em).

Hey, BTW BucBoy, did you find lodging in SD?
ruggedfun
Well, let me get my "two cents" in here. I have been a Raiders fan since Kenny Stabler was the QB and over the years much "about" the team has remained the same.

For example, they are a team that a lot of players get dealt to when it's deemed their playing days are done. Examples: Jim Plunkett, Bill Romanowski, Jerry Rice and to some extent, Rich Gannon.

But it just seems that once they pull on that Raiders jersey, they excel. To make my point, look at Gannon. Not long ago, he didn't even play for a full season. This year - the league MVP. Not bad.

Anyway, this weekend I am pulling for Oakland as I would love to see Gannon, Tim Brown and Rod Woodson all get their rings. And although Rice already has his, what a way to finish off his career. One more for the road - beautiful.

I expect Oakland to not pussy foot around with a lot of running. They will let the man who almost broke Dan Marino's hallowed single-season passing record (Gannon) do his thing and unleash a ferocious passing attack. My prediction - Oakland Raiders smoke Tampa Bay and ruin Jon "Chuckie" Gruden's Super Bowl debut. Raiders by two touchdowns - or more.
Jim at Outsports
We had several gay sports celebs make their Super Bowl picks. I love Dave Kopay's reason for picking Tampa.
Herr Tiggee
That was a clever thing, Jim. Very interesting concept - a nice cross sample of the community.

If you didn't run this wonderful poll last year, I strongly urge you to make it an annual event.
blatino8472
Just spent 3 hours in line for my two tickets to paradise. Now the convoy meets up in an hour and more Raider Nation will be invading San Diego, possibly by last call. Actually, by that time, we all should be pretty well sauced. We made sure we've packed our blades (nicely sharpened), our midnight specials, and our sawed-off shotguns. We ARE all lawless fu*** as you all know.
As for the game, we've come to the conclusion the Raiders will win!! (hmmm... imagine that). No more needs to be said! I wanted to discuss the possibility of a loss while waiting in line, but was punched in the eye. Now I'm walking around with a shiner.
blatino8472
Oops, forgot to thank Ruggedfun for his Winnipeg Raider Nation love. I'll keep your name in mind during the game.

Blatino....

Been here since Saturday..the city is rockin'...you'll have a blast, but just to warn ya, there are a lotta Bucs fans here....and then you probably know how welcome Charger Fans are making you guys...LOL....

Friday night, last call?....Brown Sugar at the Brass Rail is always off the hook....

Hey Patterson. . . yeah, I'm here in San Diego and really getting into the scene. . ..Have lodging in the CrestHill area. which is cool. Buc Fans are outnumbered by like 10 - 1 here it seems but whatever. . the game is played on the field. haven't found any tix under 1500 but still holding out hope GO BUCS

BucBoy! You must have been partyin' hearty already. That's Hillcrest not Crest Hill. And yeah, it's great (and hoppin'). I've performed down there a couple times & SD is a gorgeous city. Enjoy, enjoy!

Raiders Pro Bowl center Barrett Robbins has been sent home for being late to a team meeting. How the hell do you get to the ultimate game and then show up late for a meeting and get booted? Starting a different center could have a huge impact, as the Raider offensive line is their anchor. I respect Callahan's decision alot. I just hope that this moron doesn't get a share of the Super booty!
patterson
Raiders offense -- embarrasing thus far?? They better pray for a VERY different second half 'cause the first is a lost cause.

Whoa! Tampa Bay blowout so far. Who would have thunk it.....
patterson
Oh mama! Well, they needed to come out & get something going IMMEDIATELY & it ain't gonna happen. This shoulda been one for the ages. Instead, it's Super Bowl business as usual -- one team blows it out, the other folds. The experience & cool I thought was gonna carry the Raiders has not even made an appearance. MAJOR props to the Bucs -- they have totally SMOTHERED Oakland. Still 24 minutes to go, but this one's OVER, baby.

Not surprising at all.

Never pay attention to who the 'Media' thinks is going to win... Once you get to the big game, anything can happen...Big Offensive stats are just "fluff"... Defense is what wins Championships.

I would think ya'll would have learned after "underdog" Ohio State's awesome defense smothered and shut down Miami's infamous offense. wink
patterson
OH MAN! Big, big congratulations to the Bucs. What a major embarrassment. Oakland, far too little, far too late and (heartbreakingly for us old farts) looking every minute of their collective ages. Sad, sad, sad. No fire, no nuthin'. Tampa's incredible defense made them look like utter incompetents. Whew.
gamecock
They should give the game MVP award to the ENTIRE Tampa defense....despite Oakland scoring 21 points, that was one of the most dominating defensive displays in postseason history (and that includes the '86 Bears and '00 Ravens)....as much as I despise the Raiders, Gannon is still an All-Pro QB and fully deserves his regular season MVP award for his performance this year but the Tampa secondary (and LB's) made him look like a 3rd stringer today.

Kudos to Gruden and the entire Bucs team for executing their game plan to perfection....all those shots of John Lynch didn't hurt either wink including the shots of him smiling and holding his son on the sideline celebrating the team's first world championship!....I think even "Chucky's" trademark scowl has got to disappear until next fall.

what a defense!! i was expecting a very close game, but the D just kicked ass. no doubt about that. I agree i think the MVP should have been the entire Defense. Quite a performance

Holy crap-tacular finish Batman! I may have to become George_Bucsfan. Because of that last TD and XP, I won the pool at the bar, $500! Helps out with my trip to the convention!

Amazing how the Bucs stomped the Raiders as handily as they did. I picked the Bucs, but never imagined they'd romp the way they did. Really happy for all the Bucs fans here on Outsports! And congrats to John Lynch, Joe Jurevicius, Mikey Alstott and all the World Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers!
billsf
Do you think Dexter Jackson deserved the MVP over Dwight Smith? I thought Smith's 2 interceptions, each for a touchdown, made him a shoe-in.

Do you plan on bestowing any of your newfound wealth on your fellow Outsporters at the upcoming convention?....just kidding, of course....congrats again!....after all the endless hours of hard work you put into running the contest for the past five months, you definitely deserve it! smile.gif

I think picking Jackson was a result of his two INTs setting an early tone for the game, whereas Smith's first made the score 34-3 and things were seemingly well in hand. It was one of those games where the MVP could/should have been the entire defense. The major reason the Bucs secondary gets that number of picks is because of the pressure on Gannon, the likes of which he hadn't seen this year.

This Penn and Teller bit is obnoxious. And enough on Bon Jovi already! The only reason to be happy the season is over is that we don't have to hear them! rolleyes.gif

Well for all their offensive prowess that season, the Rams still ALMOST lost both the NFC Championship game to the Bucs and the Super Bowl to the Titans. And the Rams themselves had a pretty good defense that season (holding the Bucs to 6 points in the title game) despite the offense getting all the publicity. The offense was so ridiculously prolific that it completely overshadowed a pretty competitive D.

I know, almost only counts in horseshoes, blah, blah, blah. But if I'm heading in to the playoffs and I have a choice of having a Rams or Raiders-like offense or a Ravens or Bucs-like defense, I'll take the defense EVERY time!

More fan idiocy. Police arrested 65 people in Oakland for rioting after the loss. Who are these moronic fans who take a game so seriously that they need to go flip over cars and start fires? From the Daily News:

QUOTE
Police arrested more than 65 people and dispersed scores more with tear gas and rubber pellets as fans, unhappy with the Oakland Raiders' loss to Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl, took to the streets on Sunday night to hurl rocks and bottles and set fire to cars.

Three firemen sustained minor injuries, according to police spokeswoman Cynthia Perkins.

More than 400 police were dispatched to control the acts of vandalism and random violence that included people throwing rocks and bottles at cars, Perkins said.

She added that several cars were set alight in the melees that erupted along International Boulevard, one of the city's main streets.

A fire department spokesman said about a dozen cars were set ablaze. One fire was set at a store but there were no injuries and several garbage cans were also set alight.

Police responded by firing tear gas and \"sting balls,\" a rubber pellet that stings when it comes in contact with skin.

Crowds gathered again after being dispersed but police considered the situation under control as midnight local time (0800 GMT) approached.

\"For the most part, things are under control,\" Perkins said. She added that most of the arrests were for drunkenness.

The disturbances started after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII by crushing the Oakland Raiders 48-21.

but I still think offense is what counts in games just as in real life. Its finding the right offense that counts. You don't win championships with a season of 0-0 results.

The Bucs had to score more than 21 points to win that game. At minimum they would have had to score 3 pts since the Raiders lucked out and scored that much early. Ironically the Bucs defense probably could have held them to that if they had needed to.

The Bucs entire defense definitely deserves its accolades but Gruden should make another "thank you" visit to Tony Dungy. Because of his maniacal devotion to building the Bucs defense they have the best in the league. Even though he never got the chance to concentrate on the offense - which he did with the Colts with considerable success - Dungy can't get enough credit for what he did. Whereas Callahan took a bunch of battered veterans further than Gruden ever could.

On another note I thought the Raiders defensive secondary was the biggest surprise of the game. They totally shut down Gannons pass targets even on the few times that he had time to look for them, and judging from the closeups during the game they are also one sexy looking bunch. For both reasons I wish the cameras had focused more closely on them during the game.
Denver Fan
Let me say just one thing.

I remember how tortured I was by Raider fans when the Broncos got blown out in previous Super Bowls.

I just love to see the tables turned. The most arrogant and obnoxious fans in the league are now reduced to rioting and self destruction.

I love this game! Congrats Bucs fans
Jim at Outsports
I agree that Dexter Jackson should not have been game MVP. My vote would have been for Simeon Rice. Sports Illustrated's Peter King describes how the MVP is decided by a rather stupid system:

"I think the way the NFL picks its Super Bowl MVP is well-intentioned but dumb. Fifteen media people covering the game, including me, had a ballot this year. Four votes were given to the top vote-getter of a fan poll conducted concurrently on the Internet.

So here's how the vote went in the pressbox: Simeon Rice had 6.5 votes, Dexter Jackson 4, Michael Pittman 4 and Greg Spires .5. Rice was up big. Jackson came out on top in the Internet poll -- and was awarded all four of the fan votes, instead of a fragment equal to his percentage of total online votes. I mean, Jackson didn't get 700,000 votes and Rice zero.

I personally think the two defensive ends impacted this game much more than Jackson did, but that's neither here nor there. What is here or there is that the fans decided this MVP award, and the fans should not decide the MVP award."

I was most impressed with the Dixie Chicks national anthem, they did a great job, wasnt too happy about Shania Twain's lip syncing for halftime, but liked the Sting and No Doubt duet. I am also looking forward to the new Charlies Angels movie. It seemed as though ABC made a concious effort to avoid too many shots of Gruden in the first half. Congrats to the Bucs! the sister team of the Shithawks both expansion teams in 1976 , the Bucs are the pretty sister, the Shithawks are the sister that does drugs and gets fat hanging out at the Taco Bell

Northern California seems to have become Heartbreak Hotel this past year;
* Kings get edged by Lakers (the real NBA finals)
* Giants get "monkeyed" by Anaheim
* Now Oakland gets punked by the Bucs

As a side note, I was in San Diego this past weekend, enjoying the festivities. The scene in the Gaslamp area on Saturday night was hysterical. I saw a large group of gang members that were surrounded by San Diego cops with billy clubs. They managed to push and shove the gangstas en masse toward the edge of the crowd. I have no idea if they were arrested.

I was both pleased and impressed with how aggressive the SDPD was in taking early action whenever a fight appeared imminent. And while I saw two Bucs fans that began to instigate some "hot" situations, it was the Raider fans (surprise!) that seemed to be getting into the most trouble.

I was quite tickled to see a 5-foot-nuthin' Latino Raider fan trying to lead his posse against a husband-wife combo from Florida. As he cursed, then shoved the Buc fan, up pounces a police officer and pops the punk right in the forehead with the butt of his billyclub. The little prick fell straight back and cracked his noggin on the pavement. I couldn't stop laughing.

A Raider fan told me I was just jealous, that's why I hated the Raiders. I shook my head, "No," I said. "I just hate 99% of Raider fans. Nothing against the players, but I just want to see all the ass****s in Raider Nation humiliated."

Thank you, Tampa.

AUTiger: What a time to be without your video camera! Anyway, your vivid description will have to suffice as one of the most satisfying stories I've heard in a long, long time. I wasn't rooting for the Bucs yesterday as much as I was rooting against Raider Nation.
Joe in Philly
I was watching the game with one of our own--none other than bridgeportjake, who was in town for a few days and e-mailed me about where to watch the game. So I suggested the Bike Stop, the local leather/Levi's bar here, which has a sports bar on their second floor with a number of screens to watch the game, and I ended up meeting him there. It was great meeting Jake. He's fun to talk to, good sense of humor, knows his stuff when it comes to sports. He mentioned trying to get a group of Outsporters together in Chicago and how no one showed up. Y'all don't know what you're missing.

Anyway, he was thrilled that the Bucs won because he despises the Raiders. I, on the other hand, am getting increasingly disgusted. With their disgraceful performance last week, the Eagles blew it big time. There's no doubt we'd be having a parade this week if they hadn't wasted the golden opportunity against the Bucs. Don't waste your time telling me how their Super Bowl win proves how great the Bucs are, because I'm not buying it. I will never be convinced. Andy Reid ought to be ashamed.

Just think, that fat overrated obnoxious big mouth Sapp has a Super Bowl ring. The world is not a better place for it.
J T
I think Tampa Bay scored again! The Raiders played real flat and Gannon threw too many "ducks" balls to his receivers. I was happy that the Bucs won the game. I predicted the Bucs winning the game by 21-13 but I never thought of a blowout.

Growing up in Florida as a Dolfan, I do remember that the Bucs were laughing stock of professional football with the 0-26 streak during 76-77 season. Also, the Bucs were stuck with many retread coaches like McKay, Leeman Bennett, Ray Perkins, and Sam Wyche. So I am happy that the Bucs franchise has finally redeemed themselves to their long suffering fans. I think that the changing of the uniforms, team colors, and ownership help in changing their lovable loser image.

I was very happy that Mikey got to score the 1st touchdown in the game. He had two key receptions in the 2nd quarter of the game with his 12 yard pass reception and 16 yard reception from Brad. Mikey was one of the few players along Sapp, Brooks, and Lynch who suffered under the old citrus, flame, and bright orange uniforms with the Benny the Buc logo. Also, I was happy to see Derrick Brooks returned an interception for 44 yard and a touchdown during the rout.

For watching the game in the Windy City, I must have been one of the few guys at Big Chicks who were interested in the game besides the bartenders. For the third consecutive year of watching the Super Bowl in a gay bar, I had some queen come up to me and said "OH MY GOD, YOU KNOW FOOTBALL" remark because I was calling plays or making commentary about game calling and hits. So Bridgeport, please let me know when you are trying to get another group together in watching a TV sports even in Chicago.

Once again, I think the Bucs have scored again. It was great watching Lynch, Jurevicius, Brooks, Alstott, Dilger, and Johnson smiling on the sidelines. Now, I go into my football depression until Spring football practice for college and draft for the pros!

Was reminded of a great quote attributed to Coach McKay during that horrible 26 game losing streak. A reporter asked him ab out his team's execution that day. McKay replied, "Oh I think that's a good idea!" biggrin.gif

Anyway, that leaves the following teams as the only ones without Super Bowl titles (appearances):

  • Buffalo Bills (4)
    Cleveland Browns (0)
    Cincinnati Bengals (2)
    Jacksonville Jaguars (0)
    Houston Texans (0)
    Tennessee Titans (Houston Oilers) (1)
    San Diego Chargers (1)
    Philadelphia Eagles (1)
    Minnesota Vikings (4)
    Detroit Lions (0)
    New Orleans Saints (0)
    Atlanta Falcons (1)
    Carolina Panthers (0)
Arizona Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) (0)
    Seattle Seahawks (0)

Sometimes I think the Texans will get one before my Vikes! frown

How's this for the dumbest comment of the year. Jerry Porter, Raiders WR, is quoted as saying the following about the Tampa Bay defense:

QUOTE
I'm not going to sit here and say they're great. I'm not that impressed. Their DBs... Across the board, they're awful, but they apply enough pressure up front where you can't expose them.

Let me tell you, if Ronde Barber had to cover all day, he'd be living with his brother (presumably Tiki).
This was the same loser who was overheard telling Jerry Rice that he thought "we should run more". What a LOSER!

I just made it back last night from San Diego. I had an absolute blast and was very lucky to have been there. The city is gorgeous, full of nice people, and hosted the big week better than I could have imagined. Though the game was a blowout, it was an experience just to be there. Being a Broncos fan, I hate the Raiduhz and was cheering for the Bucs; however, I have to tip my hat to the Oakland fans for their passion; I've never seen anything like it! I sat closer to the Raider fans and it seemed they outnumbered the Bucs fans, but that could just be from my limited perspective......Pre-game was good - I enjoyed Celine signing "God Bless America" and I liked the Dixie Chicks' version of "The Banner". I wasn't too keen on the half time show with Miss Twain.

I got to meet and hangout with NFLJockGuy while I was there. He's a real sweetie, quite handsome, and has some guns on him. wink We hung out at this place called Hamburger Mary's that was quite the festive little spot for an early weekday evening.

I also got to see and shake hands with a few well-known athletes/personalities at a couple of parties or just around town. Since I don't have a lot of gay friends who would know any of these guys, I had to share it with someone who would and could appreciate it so I could think of no one better than my Outsports buddies. Here goes:

Mark Brunell - I found him quite stunning in person. He's much bigger, way more handsome in person, and is full of personality. Nice butt!

Jay Fiedler - very friendly and the ears and New England accent are actually kinda cute.

Keenan McCardell - appeared much smaller in person but was handsome, cool, and geared up for the game.

Keyshawn Johnson - "someone" had problems with the camera but Key was patient until we got it right. He's very tall and seemed quiet in comparison to his "tv personality". He was dressed in a Joe Montana jersey and had on a visor.

Curtis Martin - Dapper Dan, hair was meticulous, and he smelled good.

Jeff Garcia - I've always thought he was cute but there is something sexy about him! He was very Gucci, decked out in a Black cosmo shirt, dark denims and boots. (And yes, he can fill out a pair of jeans very nicely). He has all the personality one would expect. A female in the room made a comment about the room being dark and he lifted his shirt and said he could lighten up the place if it needed it. After I let a "yeah, baby" slip, it's safe to assume he probably knew what was up with me. ohmy.gif

Mark Schlereth - if you like a big friendly guy with a great sense of humor, cuddly, he would be your dream boat. He appeared elated to find that I was a Broncos fan, seemed to take a genuine interest in who I was, where I was from, and what I did, and gave me a guy hug when he said good bye.

Terrell Owens - seemed very quiet almost to the point of shy. Had no real interest in talking with him.

Chad Hutchinson - EXTREMELY friendly and got all excited when he found out he had "homeboys" in the house. He was cool, talked to us for a while, and the cameras do nothing for him.

Troy Brown - bumped into him in the Gas Lamp district. He was very fan-friendly.

Troy Aikman - for some reason, he came down from where ever he was dressed in shirt and tie to use the men's room. Though ABC was carrying the game, I guess he was working in some capacity for FOX; I don't know. Anyway, I was tempted to take a pic of him standing at the urinal but didn't want to get decked in the process. He was quickly brisked away once word was out that he was in the restroom. He's getter better with time.

Chad Morton - He had to be the highlight! I saw him on the street on the way to the Rockbottom Brewery and literally had to force my mouth shut. If you think he's a hottie on TV, he's even better in person. I think he was pleasantly taken aback that I immediately knew him. I could have explained it by saying there is a contingent of gay men on Outsports that thinks he is divine but I missed the opportunity.

Oh well, that's my story. I'm not sure if I've exhausted my supply of luck but if so, it sure was good while it lasted.

Damn Theo. . . .you WERE definately in the right circles last weekend. My bump with the celebs was much much less impressive. . . . saw Stuart Scott from ESPN. . . . always loved that lazy eye of his. he's hot. Also had dinner next to the aging porn star "Blue" or something like that. . . I later learned he's in the local San Diego run of "Making Porn" so some such stage title. Next year, I definately hang with you dude!!!!! bigbucboy

Thanks for the props, T!.... Have to second all his remarks about the visit to Southern Cali...If any of you EVER have the chance to visit a Super Bowl city that special week, GO FOR IT!

The jocks are especially friendly that week (yo T, I'm a director not a photographer and Keyshawn thought your camera was whack biggrin.gif )...

Even when the game sucks, it's a primo people-watching scene and if you're lucky enough to know the right people, more jock encounters and experiences than most dudes will have in a lifetime....hopefully Houston will be as much fun and more of you Outsporters will show up for the party....

Was I the only person that saw sexpot Finneran, the WR for the Falcons? He was extremely hot, and taller than I expected. Alas, it was for all of 10 seconds. He passed by with what I believe to have been his father.

Or maybe it was a sugar daddy. smile.gif

I'm jealous that you saw Mark Brunell & Jay Fiedler - I love them both. I would give my first born to mingle w/some of those guys in the NFL - well, not exactly.

Suppose they gave a team party but the team didn't come? Well, that's what just happened over in Oakland. Nice no-show, guys. Real class act!

But don't worry; as Mayor Jerry "Stuart" Brown says, "As long as you're not hurting anybody, you do whatever you want." That may have been the case during the Super Bowl, but it certainly wasn't afterwards!
