Anyone heard about this divorce yet. It's getting really nasty. I hope Terry McMillan is not homophobic and is just voicing these slurs because she's angry and upset. Love & divorce can make you say hurtful things. In any event, I hope they can find an amicable ending. Here's a piece of the article from the Chronicle.

In a tale rich in lost love, closeted secrets and acrimonious divorce, it turns out that famed local writer Terry McMillan - whose celebrated romance and subsequent marriage to a man 23 years her junior became the subject of her fictionized best-seller "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" -- actually got her groove back with a man who now says he's gay.

The story is spilling out in made-for-Hollywood detail in Contra Costa County Superior Court, where McMillan has filed for divorce from her Jamaican-born husband of six years, Jonathan Plummer.

McMillan, 53, said in court documents that the marriage was based on a "fraud" because Plummer lied about his sexual orientation and married her only to gain U.S. citizenship.
"It was devastating to discover that a relationship I had publicized to the world as life-affirming and built on mutual love was actually based on deceit," she wrote in her declaration. "I was humiliated."

Plummer, 30, countered in court papers of his own that McMillan has turned on him with a "homophobic" vengeance and is trying to force his return to an uncertain future in Jamaica. He wants to void the couple's prenuptial agreement that would keep from him most of the millions she's earned as a writer.

He also claims he was denied his full share of royalties, as spelled out in the prenup, from "How Stella Got Her Groove Back," the fictionalized account of a single mother's torrid relationship with a Jamaican young enough to be her son that very much parallels the lives of McMillan and Plummer.

Nasty story. Gosh, if these two crazy kids can't make it, what hope is there for the rest of us? wink

I'm not surprised by McMillan's actions; she is not only a scorned, but probably profoundly embarassed woman.

Remember that she publicly celebrated this "May-December" romance to the tune of a multimillion-dollar book advance and a movie starring Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs (!), which sparked more than a few (Black and other) women to rush down to the Anglophone Caribbean islands hoping they too would find the hot, young, well-hung, devoted, handsome man of their dreams. Ladies, STELLA, like Rude Jam, is CONSTRUCTED reality!

Unfortunately, McMillan's young stud turned out to be homosexual. He wouldn't have been the first 20-year-old (when they hooked up), from a profoundly repressive and homophobic society no less, to reach adulthood and not be sure of his sexual orientation and identity. Nor would she be the first woman of any race or age to marry a sexually confused male. (He really ought to be very careful setting foot on Jamaican soil, though--I mean, they really, really, really openly hate homosexuals down there.)

I think she needs to chill, give the man some bucks for his years putting up with her (because she's a piece of work) and just write another best-selling book. Does anyone think after the popularity of J.L. King's down-low crapola that her expose of marrying a closeted gay man--who was foreign, no less!--wouldn't sell like hotcakes? She could wail on Oprah, Home Delivery, etc. Plus her horrible follow-up to How Stella Got Her Groove Back, which I think was titled A Day Late and a Dollar Short, brought her a reported $17 million advance, which the publisher fully earned back. She could title the new volume Mo' Sugar than a Cane Field or something equally vernacular and catchy. I wouldn't buy it, but I bet half the females in my family would.

Ah man, now there will be even more distrust and anguish saddlebagged to the backs of black men. The reason that I say that is because I read Disappearing Acts and Waiting to Exhale. Both books made black men out to be such terrible people. I can remember hearing some female friends of mine talking about how black men are leaving good black women for white women, etc. Disappearing Acts focused on a guy who didn't work all the time, drank, just negative portrayals.

On another note, from the picture that I saw of Jonathan, he is quite fine.

Really...that's a very interesting point of view. I never thought of it as making black men look bad or anything like that but just as telling true life stories from a black females perspective. These characters are played by black men but represent society as a whole as these things occur and are carried out in all walks of life. Bottom line: men are dogs.

I thought we were pigs. At least there were plenty of piss pigs at the Wet Wednesday event this week at my favorite sex club. I wonder if McMillan's hubby was there.

"How Stella Got Her Groove Back" is on Bravo right now. Was it originally scheduled for now? No! I checked my TV Guide and they're supposed to be showing "When Harry Met Sally." They changed their schedule in order to take advantage of this story in the news.

Katie Couric interviewed Terry McMillan on "Today" this morning. They showed a photo of the happy couple before the breakup. And when I saw Terry's Jamaican stud, I saw the eyes and said "queeeeen!" My gaydar swung to the red zone so fast orange juice was squirting out of my nose. Ok, not really, but I had to think of something to do with breakfast.

I feel sorry for Terry. The player that she's married is now contesting the pre-nup saying he didn't understand it and that he contributed to Terry's success in "How Stella Got Her Groove Back." I say they should threaten him with deportation and see how adamant he is about going to court to contest this.

By the way, I didn't think he was all that in the photo. I wonder if maybe he was cuter at 24 when they first married?

The gaydar went DING DING DING the minute they showed a picture of him. Both my partner and I said the exact same thing when the picture flashed on the screen.
Joe in Philly
Does it really count as gaydar if you've already read that someone is gay before seeing him or his photo? That's like me saying "I bet the Phillies stink" after they've lost a game. wink

Well Joe, you have a point. I guess it was a "confirmation" gaydar. I mean, sometimes someone tells me he's gay online and I look at his picture and think, huh? Really? By the way, Joe, looking at your picture. wink
Joe in Philly
My picture doesn't set off your gaydar?? Noooooo! wink

Man Terry is coming across as a real shrew so far.

Are there court proceedings still going on or is the divorce now final? I can't imagine their motivation for going on Oprah.

They didn't do a good job of clarifying all of that. I'm not sure if he's still sueing her or if their divorce is final or not? From their behavior on the show, they evidently seem to have put much of their animosity behind them as they have gained closure and appear to be moving on with their lives.

That Jonathan is much cuter than he was in his 'straight' days.

I think they finalized the divorce several weeks ago. Although unsaid, it seemed like he really regretted trying to break their prenup.

I almost felt bad for Jonathan--Oprah ambushed him, painting him as being 100% at fault for all the animosity between himself and Terry.

Oprah was very one-sided which I've never seen her do. Then it dawned on me in the last 5 seconds of the show when she said "I've bought the film rights to Terry's new book".

Didn't Terry remind you of Angela Davis ? LOL
fantomas
The divorce was finalized October 4, so it's still really fresh.

I think this was all a ploy to help sell Terry's new book AND to promote Oprah's film version of it. Oprah also appeared to take it personally, since she's also a very rich (a billionaire as compared to McMillan's millions) unmarried 40+ woman whose man has been rumored to be, well, gay. She just kept hammering Jonathan, at times like a prosecutor, and it's almost as if she wanted him to get on his knees and beg Terry's forgiveness.

Terry seemed to be reveling in the attention as the scorned woman who can now be understanding. She should just write that book about the devastation and count her coins, because we all know that it's going to sell and that Oprah will help her promote it (meaning many more millions in both their pockets).

Jonathan, though very cute, annoyed me. He seemed incapable of getting his position out there. I know it's not easy, given his background and how young he still is, but I wish he'd just said, don't crucify me, because we BOTH got something out of this. I sued her because I wanted support. I'm not rich, I came to this country to be with her, now I'm embarking on a news stage in life, and I felt I needed financial support. I mean, did she put the man through college? What skills (other than providing her with more than standard orgasms) does he have? She did appear to realize, as she said, that she'd taken his 20s from him--though he'd surrendered them to marry her as well.

Terry McMillan just won't let this go. She's suing her ex for $40 million!
