HOUSTON-Mixed feelings were the reviews this morning after Wednesday night's premiere of the second season to Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Dallas Cowboys.
The topic of conversation Thursday morning while the Cowboys conducted a morning practice before heading off to Houston for Friday's meeting with the Texans was obviously the Randall Williams' segment in which his mother appeared. Williams, though, was lighthearted about his mother voicing the concerns of a single-parent raising a children in a less than desirable environment, including fears of him possibly turning "gay."
"I was there when she said it and I know what she meant," Williams said. "She's talking about growing up without a father and not getting caught up in everything that goes on the streets. I was hoping they would delete it but I guess they didn't. The guys are going to make a joke about it if it's at my expense."
Quarterback Quincy Carter was oblivious to the segment, although he caught the show.
"They've been talking all about it, but I haven't said anything to him," Carter said, "I thought it was a good show last night."
Owner Jerry Jones did not have an opinion one way or another on the overall rating of the premiere. Jones though did say he understood what Williams' mother was trying to state and was highly impressed with her openness about the situation when Williams was younger.
"I know that was the most impressive individual on the show, Randall's mother," Jones said, "I told Randall today I was so impressed with your mother and please tell her how proud we were of her testimonial about raising kids."
As far as Carter not being highlighted on the show, Carter himself did not seem to be sidetracked by what seemed to be an omission.
"All I want to do is see myself on Sportscenter," Carter said good naturedly. "That comes on everyday. This is a weekly show."
Other players, such as wide receiver Richmond Flowers were highlighted through several segments in Wednesday's show. Flowers, though, stated that the new attention has not been affecting his concentration on getting the job done.
""The camera is always going to be on me and on everybody out here," Flowers said, "Obviously being a guy that was showcased, it's (the camera) going to be on me even more. Catching the football is not something that I worry about. That's without a doubt my strong point. I never feel pressure of that (the camera)."
Flowers did note that watching the show was an event in itself.
