I'd love to be able to go to the gay clubs AND have gay friends who can talk about college hoops, NBA, etc. ... and I just can't seem to find the perfect mix. Am I the only gay sporto that likes to go clubbing?

Real athletes do not make a habit out of clubbing or bars, gay or straight. This is for reasons directly related to athletic performance. Clubs get old really, really fast for someone used to extremes already. However, if you are talking about "sports fans" then you are probably barking up the right tree. Your armchair cyclist can comfortably rate others performance anytime anywhere. However, your actual cyclist would rather be out riding or recovering from a great ride. I assume this applies to other demanding sports activities as well. But what the hell do I know. I am just bent from riding a bicycle too much

I'll admit, I'm not much of a bar person perhaps for the reasons that Erik gave. Lack of energy. I workout 5-6 days a week. I play tennis 2-3x a week and run and swim on the other days. Staying out late on a Friday night definitely makes it harder to get up on a Saturday morning to meet my buddies for doubles.
But to answer you question perryjaws, I'd say sports folks definitely hit the bars. Here in L.A. the jocks can gather once a month at
Jock Bar.

Not much of a bar person, but more because there are no bars in Miami any longer...only the Beach. Most cities have a couple of bars that will play sports on TV...Alibi in Ft Lauderdale has been known to do so...

I am in the same boat as you. I can't seem to find gay guys who like sports and enjoy a an alcoholic drink or two!!

I guess it depends where you live. Here in Chicago there are MANY gay athletes that also like to go to bars/clubs. On my softball team, we have circuit boys...they play sports, go out, and do the circuit-boy-club thing. This is certainly not MY scene, but it's what THEY do.
Also, we have a very good gay sports bar in Chicago (another is about to open at T's) that is very popular and caters specifically to the true sports crowd.

I wouldn't get too general about the relationship between sports and clubbing. After all, some of the 20-somethings I've played softball with for years have been known to go party all night and then, somehow, play at a high level the next day. Of course, most of us can't (and don't try) to do that, but there are some who do.
As far as going to bars, well, in my softball league, there are bars who sponsor several of the teams, so we'll all go in after we play to hang out. And yes, we often go to meet boys. We may be gay athletes, but gay is the key word here.

SoFla can attest to the fact that I too can be seen in a gay bar every so often. Ran into him at Georgie's during a trip up for a Miami football game. In fact, I think we were watching some sort of sporting event on the TV's while simultaneously cruising hot guys. Can't beat that combo!

We get a large turnout at the bar at work at for the baseball playoffs and World Series as well as the football playoffs and Super Bowl. We'll also have sports on if there is any game on (Sunday night football on ESPN, Yankees and Mets games, etc.) and lots of people watch. People were even glued to the thrilling finish at this years Masters. So there are lots of gay sports fans out there. You may just have to work a bit to find them!

There is a gay sports bar (Woofs) here in Atlanta which shows sports on all the tvs. Although I'm not a softball player, from what I understand its quite popular with the guys from the softball league especially after their games, as well as during big events like the NFL or MLB playoffs.
And if anyone thinks that athletes don't party, they haven't been to a NAGVA (gay volleyball) tournament!

I've seen some major sports events at George's Alibi but honestly they do a week job of it. I had to ask that the sound be put on for the world Bosox Yankies world series game. They eventually put it on the big screen but only had the sound on the small TV where I was sitting. A lot of people were watching the game a cheering. One character was trying to get laid and made aggressive passes at me, the guys to my left and right. You'll never get the sound on for a college Bball game.
For College Bball you have to be on Tobacco road or some other such place, like Kentucky or Indiana. Here in South Florida they have no clue what march madness is. In NY they only showed pro teams in most bars.

I'm old apparently. We usually just gather a bunch of folks (gay and straight) at someone's house and watch games there. Other than that, we are at our local restaurant at the bar (where we eat 3 nights a week) and we have lots of sports fans there, gay and straight.
Hell, I don't care what the crowd is as long as I have Beer and a TV.

Well, when I worked at a gay bar here in Minneapolis, I do know that the bar is pretty damn full of gay guys watching the Vikes play or when the Twins were in the playoffs for the past couple years, it was back in the video bar.
So, to answer your question ... yes.

There are a couple of gay sports bars here in San Francisco. One in the Castro on 18th Street called "The Mix" (formerly "Uncle Bert's"), the other on Polk Street called "The Cinch."

Guys from my

no gay oriented sports bars in seattle. R Place will have sports on during the big events. but no place to go to watch the mariners on a weeknight or anything. The softball league has a host bar every sunday. so usually all the softball players are out and about. The Rugby team only frequents as a team it seems when they are fundraising.

I guess it's good there's a website like this where you can "chat" about your favorite teams, etc. Most of my straight friends think it's hilarious that I am so into baseball and football. I'm not the stats-quoting junkies my Dad and brother are, but I follow my teams and can keep up in a conversation. I just have to remember that, when talking to Dad or brother or other straight guy, how cute the player's ass is is not a statistic they care to hear about. =)

Fellow NAGVA player here, and all of the players who know me know me both for my skills on the volleyball court and my antics on a dance floor or at the bars. The majority of my friends and acquaintances are also volleyball or tennis players, and I can't think of many (or any) of them who don't like to go out or who can't play sports or who don't follow sports -- at LEAST the ones that they play. Perhaps involving yourself in a sport, especially one of the local gay sports leagues (if you have one) would introduce you to a larger world of guys who are sports fans, athletes and clubbers/barflies. Clearly, I am one of them.
Also, I just saw that perryjaws is from Louisville. All of my NAGVA friends from there are not just sports fans, they are SERIOUS sports fans who stay out at the bars with me til the wee hours during/after NAGVA tournaments.

Was in NY Monday and stopped by the Gym Bar to see the end of the Suns-Spurs game. The crowd was small-ish, but seemed real enough for the most part. Anybody else spend much time there? How's it working out?

It was crowded enough when some of us Outsporters went there after the Yankees game a few weeks ago...but that was a late Saturday afternoon. A number of us thought that it isn't exactly a sports bar. The TVs all showed sporting events but none had the sound on. They were too busy playing music. So it seemed like any other bar, except for the games on TV.

JIP: Yes ... that's what was missing -- the sound (hence it was tough for guys to get too enthused about what was on). There were guys watching (both the hoops and the Yankees were on); but it felt more like a regular bar with guys in it who might actually enjoy sports, than a sports bar. At least, however, there was NO SMOKE (except for the smoke-filled patio one has to pass through to enter) -- hooray for Bloomberg on that.

I live in the neighborhood, and whenever I walk by it seems fairly busy, althought that may just be all the guys who gather on that front porch - type area to smoke. I'm not crazy about the place. There's no sound on any of the TV sets, and I didn't detect a noticeable level of interest in sports among the clientele the two times I was there. To me, it's more a sports-theme bar than a real sports bar.

I never thought of the Mix as a sports bar
they have games on but I never see people really watching
I think the Detour also shows games as well. I also think that the bar sponsors a softball team or something
But this is San Francisco, I wouldn't have any problem going into a straight sports bar with gay friends

I've never been to a gay bar here in Charlotte. Luckily I have found some guys who do like sports down here. For some reason most of my friends are straight so I end up going to the bars with them. It's all fun.

Im not a big bar person because I dont enjoy most people's attitudes when I go out. But if I do I kind of like the Roundup Saloon, which even though I dislike country music, is a really good place to go in Dallas.
Oh and CardsFan, you arent missing anything by not going to a gay bar in North Carolina. Ive been to those in Raleigh, Durham, and Greensboro and its rather crappy to me. Im sure Charlotte isnt much different (one friend lived there and said they were rather cliquish).

Normally, I'm not into the bar scene at all. BUT, after the pride parade a couple of weeks ago, a friend and I dropped into
Rain and it was awesome! A female coworker and I are going for Happy Hour this afternoon. I promised to buy her one Cosmopolitan...I'll probably stick with my usual cranberry juice.

Just found this thread and the answers are coming pretty late but the gay sports bars in Chicago are Crew in the Uptown neighborhood and North End just north of Boystown proper. Of the two, Crew is the better of the two with tons of TVs playing just about anything you could want, often in hi-def. The food is great and usually lots of eye candy too.

I was out at Woody's in Dallas on the night of the Rose Bowl and the entire upstairs was packed and the crowd grew as the game went on. When Texas scored the winning touchdown, I thought the floor was going to cave in. It was a lot of fun and I met some really nice people.
