I'm surprised that I appear to be the first to post something about this. It's so sad to see a former great go out this way.

Indians release Brady Anderson

DETROIT -- The Indians released veteran Brady Anderson and filled his spot on the roster Tuesday with outfielder Chris Magruder, a player the Tribe picked up from the Rangers last month.

The decision to release Anderson was made Monday night after the Indians lost to the Tigers, 4-3. He didn't start, but he came to the plate as a pinch hitter. But when the Tigers switched to a left-handed pitcher, Anderson returned to the Tribe bench without seeing a pitch.

In releasing Anderson, the Indians seem to acknowledge that the 38-year-old outfielder had little left in his tank. While he had played solidly in the field, Anderson never found his stroke at the plate.

Signed in the offseason as a free agent, Anderson appeared in 34 games for the Indians, batting .163 (13-for-80). He hit .122 in his last 74 at-bats.

Anderson was an American League All-Star in 1992, '96 and '97, when he was at the height of a career that included all or parts of 14 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. He hit 50 home runs and drove in 110 runs in 1996, his best season.

"I felt like we gave Brady a chance," Indians manager Charlie Manuel said. "In the end, if you look at our club, especially from a defensive standpoint in the outfield, we felt we wanted to go younger.

"It was time for us to take another look at somebody."

Brady must be relieved that Piazza stole his thunder... Oh well, I think he'll be leading a morning exercise show (in lycra) by the fall.

And he'll have more time for Brendan Lemon?

Brady's already taken, and his BF is based in the DC area [most of the time] so maybe he's actually glad to be back home!

As for his future--what does a [relatively] quiet, closeted ballplayer do next?

Anything that gets him more in the public eye is fine with me!

Scratch another candidate name off the list for first major league ballplayer to come out.

On the game broadcast tonight (BOS 3, NYY 1 <smirk>), it was rumored that Brady Anderson might join the Red Sox AAA team in Rhode Island, both for his experience and to have him available to move up. And Washington's only a shuttle flight away...

Will the Indians STOP getting rid of all their good looking players (Cordova, Anderson, etc.) At least I still have Branyon to look at. But he's not hitting much over .200 and his strikeout/AB ratio is through the roof. It won't be long...

Hey Brady...
Need a job? I'm looking for someone to mow my grass and bring me lemonade.

Does anyone know what Brady's doing these days? I don't think he's offically retired yet.

Brady will probably just stay home and putter around the house - that is, until he starts to get on Brendan's nerves
