We're planning on going to Barbados for a week. My BF found some info saying it is too brit, and can be very 'stuffy'. Has anyone been there? What to expect? Any comparable carribean or tropical island? Any info is greatly appreciated...

I've been there on cruise ships several times. Nothing wrong with it, but not my personal favorite Caribbean island. They do try to create a British atmosphere, but the truth is, it's a long way from England both geographically and in spirit. The main town, Bridgetown, is a little bigger than the towns on most of the other islands, but that's not really saying a lot. Highlights are the good prices on rum & nice beaches. But it's relatively flat, if you're looking for scenery, I'd definitely recommend St. Thomas or St. Lucia. For gay nightlife, San Juan. JMHO, of course!

HB, when it comes to faux Britannias in the Caribbean, none of them are too gay friendly, no? I'm thinking of the Caymans, the Bahamas, and Bermuda by extension. Aren't the Dutch islands a LOT better for gay tourists?

I've only visited most of the islands as port calls on cruise ships, which is a different experience than staying overnight. Sometimes there were substantial GLBT contingents on the ship, and I never heard of anyone having any problems. I agree, though, that most of the resorts seem to be geared to straight couples & families. For anyone looking for a gay social scene, I think San Juan is the best choice. But if you're looking to enjoy the beach & make your own fun, any of the islands are fine. Haven't been to the Dutch islands, so I really can't comment on that.

fantomas had some interesting comments about homophobia in the Caribbean in this discussion ...

If you go to Barbados, visit Bathsheba, on the eastern coast; on a clear day you can see the coastline of Africa, and also go surfing there.

Bridgetown is the major city and you can shop duty-free there.

Some beaches to check out are Bottom Bay (on the east), Mullins (on the northwest coast) and Accra Beach (on the Southwest).

The Oistins fishmarket (I forgot it!) is worth seeing too, on a Friday.

Also consider a catamaran boatride.

BTW, Barbados was once known as the "Shire" of the Caribbean because of the strong British influence. It's not as rabidly anti-gay as Jamaica. The people are pretty friendly, too. (I lots of Bajan friends who would wring my neck if I didn't say some good things about their country--it is worth seeing.)

Now, FT, you know better than that. I recognize your farsighted wisdom, but Africa is hundreds of miles east of Barbados and never visible to even the most eagle-eyed! wink
