Things like this don't happen too often here in the middle of the country...

QUOTE
(From the K.C. Star)

Today Gay Pride, tomorrow the world. Or at least the city. The Cowtown's most famous drag queen, Flo (aka John Koop), is poised to drop a pop culture bombshell on a sleepy Midwestern town. As in Kansas City.

“Wait till I tell you I'm running for City Council,” Flo says. “That'll be great news.”

The reason for Flo's political aspiration: “It's time,” he says. “And I live in the 4th District. How many gay people and liberals live in the 4th District. Everybody!” The 4th District includes Westport, Hyde Park and midtown.

But let's get one thing straight (so to speak). “It has nothing to do with me being a drag queen,” Flo says. “It's just common sense. Intelligence. Good lord!”

Not that Koop or Flo or perhaps both would be above shaking up the system. “I'd even go into a City Council meeting in drag one time,” he says. “That'd be good entertainment on Channel 2.”

Qualifications: How about Flo's good work as president and emcee at the June Gay Pride celebration here. A three-day blowout with food, bands, informational and voter registration booths, and the like. “We had for the very first time last year, 49 sponsors,” Flo says. “And for the first time ever, in 15 years, Gay Pride made a profit at the Liberty Memorial. Isn't that great?”
Here's a pic of Flo. She's a pretty popular comic drag queen, and a great gay rights advocate and AIDS fundraiser. Her Sunday "Flo Show" in KC has raised over $500,000 for AmFAR, including all tips and proceeds for the past several years.

This is Austin's iconic mayoral candidate. I wish you could see him walking around downtown in his black thong and high heels when it's hot outside. smile.gif

I will have to send that bit of info to a friend in Chicago (who used to live in KC) who will get a kick out of it. A lot of my friends always loved it when she and Rage would come to St. Louis.
