Full Version: Jeremy Shockey's Swanson Commercial

Okay, so I don't cook much. I buy many t.v. dinners. Everybody's entitled to their own opinion regarding Jeremy Shockey, who is an excellent football player. However, I take offense to Swanson's using and paying a clearly homophobic athlete to promote their products. I am boycotting Swanson's t.v. dinners and writing to the company about my feelings regarding this advertisement. Those of you that know me, know that I stay far away from the P&R thread. So, I am posting the address of Swanson's here for those of you that would like to write to the company. I realize that the moderators may move this thread over to the Politics and Religion thread. But, here is the address if you wish to express your dismay towards Swanson's.

Boycott Swanson's!
George Twins fan
So is there a new Hungry Homophobe meal I'm not aware of?

I've been boycotting Swanson's for years-not because of Shockey, but because the food tastes like crap. Think Stouffers CDog. No homphobic spokesperson and the food ain't bad either.

There are probably more peas in one Swanson's dinner than Shockey will have catches this year.

Food for thought-which has more fat content, a Swanson's dinner or Shockey's head?
Cattledog
Hey, George. I don't make a good activist, do I biggrin.gif ? However, those Hungry Man meals are pretty good (despite the loads of sodium and fat content), and they were at a good price today at Safeway. I bought Marie Callender's, instead. But, remember, Swanson's makes other stuff like chicken broth, too. I just wanted everyone to be aware of it because I was really annoyed when I saw the ad. Between my recent posts on the women's tennis thread and on the NFL (both of which I really don't post much), I think everyone is pretty much thinking, "go back to your precious Yankees, Cattledog!".

Not at all...

Good topic/thread. Shockey is a no talented, overrated, media darling for some God awful reason.

But bad news for the Yankee's, Cleveland plays the Royals 7 more times this year. It's a cake schedule. It's the division or bust for the Yankees.

I hesitate to post this because it means I'm going to disagree with cattledog twice in one day, but......

Shockey is hot as balls. I'd forgive him anything. I feel so cheap.

MM, both Jeremy Shockey and Mary Pierce are jerks. Our politics are pretty opposite, too. But, you know I think you are cool, so post away wink !

In case you want to extend the boycott to the entire company, Pinnacle Foods also has these brands in its corporate web: Aunt Jemima, Celeste, Duncan Hines, Lender's, Log Cabin (the syrup, not the GOP group), Mrs. Butterworth's, Mrs. Paul's, Open Pit, Van De Kamp and Vlasic.

Talk about a monopoly! wink However, I went to the website for Acme Markets (owned by the Albertson's company, for those familiar with that name) and they had listings for their own brand, plus Cary's, Kellogg's Eggo, Essensia, Maple House, Spring Tree and even Smuckers. wink

I just wanted to provide an e-mail address for those that wish to contact the company. Thanks.

I know that you guys have found me a bit silly over this whole thing, but I did want to let you know that I did hear from Pinnacle Foods Cooperation.

They are sending me a coupon.

Oh boy, a coupon! At least you got a response, such as it is. I've still heard nothing from the Phillies in reply to my letter regarding Gay Community Day.
Adam
You're getting a coupon for product from a company you're boycotting? Do they think your principles can be bought for a mere "25 cents off" chit? Makes no sense to me. By the way, I wrote them objecting to their use of Shockey but couldn't in good conscience join this boycott; as I keep kosher, I've never had a Swanson product and never will.

I have to agree. So he's in testerone overdrive. His performance last night was impressive. As was his backside when he flipped over for the camera. You'd need a passport to enter that country and i am applying!
ung
I agree... watching Shockey highlights and replays is like watching porn for me. When he flipped over, I was loving it!

Here is one of the biggest farces in football and they're making him the highest paid TE in the league. Here is an injury waiting to happen.

- - - - - - -
The Giants have signed tight end Jeremy Shockey to a long-term deal that makes him the highest-paid tight end in the NFL.

The deal ties Shockey to the Giants through 2011, and replaces the final two years (2005 and 2006) of his rookie deal.

Shockey gets $3 million to sign and a 2006 $7.5 million roster bonus, which is fully guaranteed for injury. He also receives a $250,000 reporting bonus in 2006, pushing the total guaranteed bonus money, for practical purposes, to $10.75 million.

However, the bonus money is offset by steep drops in his 2005 and 2006 salary. His 2005 base, for example, drops from $1.723167 million to $900,000. His base salary in 2006 is reduced from $2.071415 million to $950,000.

The new money, then, over the first two years is $8.805 million, and it could drop to $8.505 million (more on that later).

In 2007, Shockey gets a $1 million roster bonus, a $150,000 reporting bonus, and a salary of $850,000.

In 2008, he receives a $500,000 reporting bonus and a salary of $2.2 million.

In 2009, the salary is $3.025 million, with a $500,000 roster bonus.

In 2010, the salary moves to $3.825 million, with another $500,000 roster bonus.

In 2011, he'll receive $4.508332 million in salary, and a $500,000 roster bonus.

The total value of the contract is $30.183332 million, with new money of $26.388750.

The deal, however, also contains so-called "de-escalators," which could reel in his salary by $300,000 per year from 2006 through 2011 if he fails in the preceding season to put up Pro Bowl-caliber numbers.

So the total package could be reduced by up to $1.8 million, in $300,000 increments.

Even without the $1.8 million in money that could fall out of his salary figures, the new money is a hair under $24.59 million, and Shockey's per year new money average is $4.91 million -- more than the new money averages for all other recent tight end deals, including contracts signed by Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, Alge Crumpler, Todd Heap, and Randy McMichael.

I read this thread and I was shocked! Shocked, I tell you! I had no idea Swanson's was still in business!
