We have this thread for the regular season, so why not the preseason...

That Kelly Holcombe can really throw that football, can't he?
Boltergeist
if Holcomb can play like that in the reg. season either him of Favre may be the best backup QB in the GFFL
PCC
Michael Vick was just carted off the field in the Falcons-Ravens game.
PCC
Fractured Fibula for Vick. Out at least 6 weeks.

Ok, this is my first post. But, let me say I LOVE THIS SITE!

I had Vick as my starter in my Yahoo League, but I'm not sweating it because I have McNair as backup. I'm Golden!

Also, if he is back by the end of October, then there is still hope!

Welcome, ML. So, just for the record, are you actually a lady? I think we only have one woman who posts regularly, and we can always use some fresh faces.

Question for all: can the Falcons survive the loss of Vick the same way that the Eagles survived the loss of Donovan McNabb?
Theo
Joe, I was reading an article that ranked team quarterbacks and the Falcons were ranked #4. I guess that translates to an answer of "yes, the Falcons should be able to survive the loss with Doug Johnson at the helm".

Want to know which quarterback trio ranked #1? You guessed it: McNabb, Detmer, and Feeley.

Yep, I'm a 28 year old married lady from NYC who loves football. I came across this site while reading up on some teams. I fell out of my chair laughing when I saw that Wade Phillips is known as Captain Clueless. Finally, a sports site that isn't afraid to state what is just blatently clear to the rest of the world.

Also, Hot Jock talk is the greatest invention known in the history of man.

As for REALLY impressive QB's don't count out Steve McNair. Now that he had a chance to heal, he was really impressive last night. The other cool thing about him is that if he fractured his fibula, he would just duct tape it together and keep going.

Atlanta announced today that Michael Vick has a broken Fibula - which is very similiar to the injury that Eagles QB Donovan McNabb suffered last year. Falcons are expecting Vick to be out for at least 6 weeks, and unlike y'all, I really do see where Doug Johnson will be able to lead this team that well. Atlanta will be lucky to go .500 with Vick on the injured list. Of course, as a Cowboy fan, that makes me happy as we open at home against Atlanta!!

You know...

Vick out for the falcons. #1 the falcons win, right now, with vicks feet, not his passing. Gonna miss the first, what 4 games? Doubt he's gonna be 100% for at least a few weeks after that... no vick running = no winning.

Comparing this to the eages is bubkus. Atl's D is not world class like the eagles. As good as detmer/AJ did with Dmac out...they continued to win with D. Atl just cant do that... sorry, thanks for playing falcons.

I don't know if it really IS that dubious a comparison. After all, the Eagles were SO reliant upon Donovan McNabb to be Mr. Everything when he got hurt that Koy Detmer and then A.J. Feeley (who is a cutie, BTW) were unknown and unproven commodities. IMO, the Eagles went 5-1 because the rest of the offense stepped up (in particular Duce Staley and Todd Pinkston) and the defense got a lot nastier.

People are predicting doom and gloom for the Falcons without Vick, but we don't know that T.J. Duckett won't step up and become the stud running back the Falcons expect him to become someday. We don't know that their defense won't step up and stop somebody.

Besides, if Atlanta at least goes .500 when Vick is gone, they will probably still be in the playoff hunt, though with less margain for error than they might have had. Then again, what if the Falcons have a winning record or go undefeated? Then the Falcons may be hard-pressed to justify rushing Vick back in until he's had a chance to be FULLY healed AND he's had a chance to regain some of his timing in practice or later in games.

Listen to what you are saying.... the rb needs to step up...unproven... the d needs to step up.. unproven... WR's need to step up.. unproven.. ect ect ect...

There is NO denying that Vick was the falcons last year. As much as you claim dmac was the eagles O.. he was not. Staley proved to be a solid RB. The D proved it could win games, if the O played well or not. By the time dmac went down, the O was not 100% reliant upon his skills to win games.

I feel sorry for Doug Johnson, the Atlanta back-up, talk about some pressure for him. He better not mess up or he is going to be known as " a worse back-up than than Koy Detmer." And to be worse than a Detmer is just a low down dirty shame.
Married Lady
Oh, and thank you everyone for the nice welcome! I'm so excited to be posting to this board! Like I said, I've been reading it for a while.

Huh? Didn't you watch the Eagles-49ers game on Monday Night Football last year?

Methinks you need to do some remedial reading. wink

Perhaps the hopes could be that the atlanta back-up can perform as well as the eagle back-up to the back-up.. mr aj.

Don't feel too sorry for Dougie. One, he's a major annoying whiner, and 2) his contract is structured such that he is very well taken care of in the $$$ department, even though he wasn't supposed to see a minute of playing time.

Interesting Dougie drama forthcoming: Redskins (coached by Spurrier, who is #1 on Dougie's s**t list) and Atlanta Sept. 14.... eek! biggrin.gif

Goes back to Dougie's playing days at UF. Long story, but see the online Orlando Sentinel for a summary...

My biggest problem with him was his whining and sideline confrontations with Spurrier. No matter how infuriated Johnson could have been, and no matter how justified he may have been, you just don't berate the coach during the game. Save it for later and don't jeopardize the game for your teammates. He just wasn't very mature.

Otherwise, I hold him no more responsible for some of those tough losses than I hold Gray Davis personally responsible for California's budgetary mess. Was he responsible for some of it? Yes. was he solely responsible? No.

In any event, I wish him well, just as I do any other Gator. It's gonna be a helluva game.
