Full Version: Where is today's equivalent of 1920's-30's Provincetown?

I'm looking for retirement location ideas, and I'm drawn to the qualities that old Provincetown offered: off-the-beaten path, thriving (if small) gay presence, artists, charming, beautiful.
Of course, P-Town now is expensive and all the gay artists moved away 20 ago.
So where did they move to?
Where and what is today's version of old-time Provincetown?

If you can still afford it....artists, galleries, gays, on the Lake....

Problem is, Chicago money has found it too...

Check it out....

Miller Beach in Gary, Indiana. Don't laugh! It's on the lake, has the South Shore train to downtown Chicago, and is only 40 minutes away from Chi-town. Even though taxes went up last year, it's still way, way cheaper to live in Miller than Chicago. I've been there five years and I love it. Technically, it is part of Gary, but it sure doesn't feel like it. Oh, I forgot to add there is a large gay community in Miller. Cool!

Sounds a little bit like maybe this place. Great on the Lake ( Coeur D' Alene) location. Beautiful scenery, artsy. Just 30 minutes away from me here. Definitely now on the map, but still very small city feel overall.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. Yes, Coeur d'Alene is beautiful, though those winters give me pause...

Coeur d'Alene? Really???

I've only driven through it a couple of times, and it is in a beautiful location, but I'd be a little leary of those goose-steppers up by Hayden Lake. Are they still a problem?

If you mean by "goosesteppers" the Arayan Nation folk. No, they were kicked out, and left years ago. They relocated somewhere in the Pennsylvania area, gosh about 8 years ago. I assume thats who you meant....??

It was. Thanks.
