Bob Garcia paints a picture of his son as a changed man since Jeff's Jan. 14 arrest in San Jose on DUI charges. Garcia is scheduled to be arraigned March 15, when he'll face a pair of misdemeanor charges. Leaving San Francisco may be a part of putting that ugly chapter behind him as well, Garcia's father said.

"That DUI has been a real bump in the road for him,'' Bob Garcia said. "He went through some tough times after that DUI. But he has four difference counselors he sees as part of the league [substance abuse] program, and he hasn't had a drink since. He's rededicated his life, he's got a personal trainer, and he told me, 'Dad, I've never been in as good a shape as I am right now.' ''

The arrest and subsequent counseling led Garcia to some soul searching, his father said. Bob Garcia can't help but feel the pressure of being the 49ers' constant focal point contributed to his son's behavior.

"I think those counselors narrowed it down pretty quickly,'' Bob Garcia said. "Jeff has always been real diplomatic and just kind of taken everything on himself. I'm not making excuses for him, and thank God no one was hurt, but I think it got to the point where his only outlet was to go out and get a drink.

"This thing [the drinking] only started about a year ago, and it just seems that that's about when everything was pointed at him all the time. I don't care if the special teams couldn't go out and kick a field goal, it was Jeff Garcia, Jeff Garcia. That's all people wanted to talk about. So it built up, and his only outlet maybe was to go have a drink. I think that was a big part of the situation.''

Though the Garcias are extremely close, even Bob Garcia had difficulty getting his son to open up about the frustration from last season, when the 49ers went 7-9 under new head coach Dennis Erickson and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2000.

"I sat him down and said, 'Jeff, I don't want you to tell me that you're okay, I want you to tell me what's really in your heart,' '' Bob Garcia said. "He said, 'I'm really lonely.' That was the first thing that came out of his mouth, that he was lonely. I knew he had broken up with his girlfriend right after the 2002 season, and I think he just hung out with all the guys he's always been with since high school. And maybe that wasn't the best thing for him."

Talk radio in Dallas thinks the Cowboys should bring him in for a talk. If he is in good shape with a healthy back, he would be a great veteran QB signing to complement Quincy Carter and/or give him competition for the starting job. Plus he would get the fresh start, at least out of the Bay area. First and foremost, I hope he is starting to get his life back together.

Garcia's story sounds exactly like Esera Tuaolo spoke of in his coming out
article on Outsports. I won't believe or say that Garcia is gay until he
himself says it, but I get the feeling it's just a matter of time.

Garcia is now coming to the Cleveland Browns! Wonder if he'd like a cop to show him the best gay bars in his new hometown! wink

Jeff Garcia is now officially my Public Enemy Number One of All Time. Not only is he a disgusting homophobe in denial, an alcoholic in denial, a homosexual in denial, a drunk driver in denial, and a third stringer in denial, but he has dislodged Tim Couch from the Browns. Fine.

Tim, good riddance to that god-forsaken industrial wasteland that deserved what it got from Art Modell (the Curse is alive), and whose fickle fans somehow blamed you for not being able to build a solid OL since you were there. They will likely love you in Dallas. At least there you can wear the cowboy hat and boots and not be stared at (well, I'll stare at you).

As for Cleveland fans, the fun has begun. Anyone who can root for Garcia with a straight face can buy my Tim Couch/Browns memorabilia on Ebay. As for Garcia's new shaved-head-receding-hairline trendoid look, he looks like a swabbish techno-lizard who showed up just a little too late at the rave to have his pick of fresh club-boi meat. Check out this doozie from the Garcia press conference. No caption is necessary. Have a great season, Dawg Pound.

Welcome aboard!
Jim Allen
Ruh roh, wait 'til OSUFan reads that.......

"Disgusting homophobe"? Does publicly saying you're not gay merit that? Drunk driving does not = alcoholic.

What was so special about the Cards v. Tigers WS to merit a handle? I mean, sure, Jose Feliciano singing the National Anthem was pretty cool, but I'm just curious.

Actually, Garcia in that link looks a lot like a photo that Allen has in one of his online galleries in the "Board Member photos" thread.

Here, read it for yourself:

"It won't happen again": spoken like a true drunk.

I would also like to point out two things: his BAC was .237 (!!!!) and he had 3 passengers, one of which was an 18-year old woman. Good going, Jeff. That's the way to make decisions in life!

Would we even be talking about this dork if he had killed someone, maybe himself, or maybe taken a couple of passengers in his own car with him? And you can give me the whole "everyone makes mistakes" spin if ya like: a BAC that high with passengers is evidence of a PROBLEM. I guess Cleveland can't shy away from signing players who arrive loaded down with non-football related baggage; they need SOMEONE to blame when their team stinks.

.237!! Nice choice, Dawgs.

Does it matter? Whether I am in rehab, or my mommy used to beat me, or I'm a state trooper, or I'm an ambulance-chasin' sleazoid lawyer who targets DWI goons, one thing is certain.

I do NOT feel sorry for a multi-millionaire closet-case who can't even call a cab for his "friends" after drinking himself into a stupor, tells the media and the world "sorry, guys, but I'm straight", talks shit about the outgoing quarterback at the very first press conference for his new team, and wants everyone to love him so much that he forks over a half-assed classicly Twelve-Stepian bullshit excuse about his behavior, hoping that his adoring gay male fans will forget what an ass he is and just concentrate on his pathetically bland self-absorbed image.

Count me out.

Just curious... anyone wonder what this "wallpaper artist" individual's exact reason for all of a sudden showing up on outsports boards only to be so synical are? Sounds like I hear a heel busting into and getting stuck in a soap box and someone crashing down, then she gets up name calling and blaming everyone else for the injustices in her world, namely Jeff Garcia.
