Herr Tiggee
Obviously, we're not out of the woods yet. But all signs are good that we'll miss out on the fun that Emily is sure to generate.
sooners2727
Emily adds to the record books for this hurricane year... she's the strongest hurricane ever in the month of July. I'm assuming this is based on her winds (155 mph) and not pressure... though, now that I take a look at her latest pressure, 929 mb, that may be the case. She's right on the edge of being a Cat 5 and could very well make landfall as a Cat 5, depending on whether or not she has recently gone through an eyewall replacement cycle at that time.
Herr Tiggee
The Yucatan appears to be toast at this point. Cat 5? This is gonna be a looong summer.
Joe in Philly
The winds are down to 135 mph, so it's now category 4. Still pretty strong, though.
JC
Emily's moving offshore again and I am officially under hurricane watch. As soon as I saw how far south she was last week I wondered if she was headed this way.
KeyWest Guy
JC, good luck. Best advice is to be prepared and hope for the best.
jason_nation33
hey y'all i was watching a special on the weather channel over the past weekend and although they mentioned the galveston hurricane they said the 1935 labor day storm that hit the florida keys was the most intense storm to hit the US on record. many people drowned on the florida east coast train packed with evacuees - surge swallowed the train up.
MIB
Say hello to Franklin! TD 6 was just upgraded a few minutes ago. He's expected to do a clockwise loop, meandering in the western Atlantic, and moving toward Florida then.

Weird track: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_a...2122.shtml?5day

The NHC believes he could become a hurricane in 2-3 days.

Another history-making event: Never before have there been 6 named storms by the third week of July.

Here is a graphic of the new storm. I wonder if it is predicted to curve clockwise (eastward) because of a trough coming through, and if so what would make it then loop back to the west.

storm track
MIB
On TWC, they said a high pressure ridge and a trough from the states will cause it to do a loop as is indicated in your link and my link above.
Joe in Philly
Computer model link -- I guess it's because the storm is so new, right now as I post this only 2 computer models are up. (I think the link will have the updated info throughout.)
MIB
And could Gert be brewing in the NW Caribbean?

Just think: we're not even at the busiest time of the hurricane season yet, either! eek!
Herr Tiggee
In about a week I'll be headed to the Outer Banks. These hurricanes are pissing me off.
MIB
Mother Nature--she's a bitch! tongue.gif
sooners2727
But no, this isn't fair! This is going to sound bad, but I wanted Franklin to hit here! See, I'm originally from Franklin, Tennessee and didn't want to come down here with the parents and thought it would be pretty ironic if the first storm to hit here since we moved would be Franklin. Alas, it is not to be. Though, with tropical systems, you can never rule anything out.
MIB
I have this feeling that Franklin won't amount to much after all, and that he won't become a major hurricane.
JC
Storms that form that far north in the Atlantic rarely become very strong.
MIB
But Franklin is not far north in the Atlantic, and the SSTS ahead of him are very warm.
MIB
Hmmm...is Irene headed for the Carolinas or New England? She's predicted to be a hurricane by then.

The advisory for yesterday had the track heading directly towards my current home, Wilmington, NC ... which would have been a nightmare. (Of course, the storm tracks, at this point, are highly variable, but as a HUGE meteorology fan, I check them out constantly.)

When Charley gave us a glancing blow last year at marginally below hurricane status, it took the city quite a while to get the downed trees and such taken care of. Stay away Irene.

Bring it on!!

We're under a Tropical Storm Watch now. And just when we're looking to get out of town, too. It should have passed by Saturday, tho, which is when our flight leaves for Barcelona...

Now it's a hurricane, and Jim Cantore is on South Beach! Wish I didn't live so far away from the beach...
We're not going to board up for this one unless it suddenly picks up a lot of strength....
sooners2727
Where did you see that it was a hurricane? The last NHC update said that it hadn't gotten too much stronger so she's still just a TS.
sooners2727
Nevermind... you meant your TS watch was now a hurricane watch... context clues, I should use them!
MiamiSpartan
Sorry! My bad. It's expected to be a hurricane when it reaches us on Friday.
MIB
Jim Cantore? Too bald. I'd MUCH rather take Mike Bettes. Hot, hot, hot!
sooners2727
Yeah, give me Mike too. Hurricane warning now for y'all on the east coast. I'm glad at least the government is taking this seriously with schools being closed and such.
MiamiSpartan
Bettis is hot, but I'll take that furry musclebear Cantore any day! There's an article about him in this morning's Miami Herald, and it talks about his groupies! (No, they did not mention me! smile.gif ) It does describe him as being so powerfully built that he could destroy Willard Scott with his bare hands if that ever became necessary. smile.gif
MIB
What? And no mention of studly Mike Bettes. Mike's gay. He has to be. Jim's married, and he's not as furry as believed. I do like guys with hair, but Mike is just fine with me.

I just heard the same bad pun on the Weather Channel, of all places. Maybe Jennifer Lopez checks our boards. Sure Cantore and Bettes have been on-scene but it won't count as a real monster hurricane until Mike Seidel shows up.

MIB
She turned southwest, toward the Keys. Maybe she's on her way to teach KW a lesson in civility. biggrin.gif
Herr Tiggee
Mother Nature doesn't care about lawyer-bartenders. There's some serious sinning in KW that needs cleaning. A hurricane may be overkill, but it does need cleaning.

Katrina is a real b**ch! For what was supposed to be a relatively weak storm, she hung around for quite awhile and did more damage than expected. It's 12:30 a.m., and it's just now cleared out of Ft. Lauderdale. It's been over land for about 7 hours now and it's still a Cat 1 Hurricane. They tell us that that's rather unusual. Three fatalaties at this time in Broward County, mostly due to trees falling on people/cars. According to the news, Cutler Ridge in Dade Co. where MiamiSpartan lives got quite a wallop. Hope you're OK down there!

One of the models had it taking that turn that it did tonight. That was quite interesting. The fact that it's picking a rather thin part of land to cross, and the fact that it's the swampy southern part of the state (that was an interesting thing this weather geek learned tonight - it won't weaken as much going over that part because of the moisture content in the land and the relative lack of development there, very interesting) is not good. She'll have plenty of warm water to soak up and use to her advantage on the way to her second landfall. The less powerfull she could have been coming back off land would have been better.
KeyWest Guy
MIB & Tiggee, hate to disappoint you but still here in one piece. And I get an unexpected day off work!

Getting some sustained winds and periods of heavy rain, but nothing like they got up on the mainland.
Joe in Philly
Katrina is strengthening rapidly -- now a Category 2 with winds near 100 MPH. Might be up to Category 3 tomorrow. If the predicted track holds it looks like bad news for the Florida panhandle again.
MiamiSpartan
Rob Marciano is across the street from my house AS WE SPEAK!!! He is a HOTTIE! He just did a live remote with my home in the background. His co reporter (a female, darn it!) just came in to use our restroom....we're in the middle of a party, and tried to get her to bring Rob over, but so far no luck...I'll keep you all posted. We survived, but got HAMMERED by Katrina here in Cutler Ridge...
Joe in Philly
You shouldn't have let her use the restroom unless she brought Rob over. Duh!
MiamiSpartan
My partner just ruined a live shot by going over and asking Rob is he needed to use our restroom!! smile.gif Gotta love those martinis!
He laughed and winked at him!
Herr Tiggee
Invite him in for a 3-way...he might accept, but he's kinda picky, so don't be angry if he says no.
Joe in Philly
I assume he'll leave soon to chase Katrina so that 3-way will have to be a quickie. wink Katrina now looks like it'll reach Category 4, and the track has shifted west, so the center might miss the Florida panhandle and go towards Alabama or even SE Louisiana.
MIB
This proves once again: Mother Nature is quite a bitch! tongue.gif

All during the day I kept hearing how Katrina confounded forecasters, even the experts at the NHC in Miami, because (a) they never expected her to suddenly veer to the southwest, (cool.gif she lost hardly ANY strength because of her veering SW, and © she was much stronger than Cat. 1 storms typically are at that stage. It was as if she was a strong Cat. 2 by the damage she left in southeast Florida.

Now she's confusing the hell out of everyone because she's still going west southwest when they all figured she would have turned north by now. Well, whaddya expect from a woman? Damn broads are just SO unpredictable. They never know where they're going, they take their time in getting there, and they blow into town messing up everything! biggrin.gif tongue.gif
MiamiSpartan
They kept saying the storm was heading west, when it was pretty obviously turning SW. If this thing hits New Orleans as a 4 iwth all the wind and rain, that city will be devestated..
JASooner
In my opinion (as a meteorologist), if you live in the New Orleans area, I'd strongly recommend you consider getting out of there today (Saturday). The numerical models are converging on a forecast track very near New Orleans and it appears it will be at least cat. 3. It's almost certain major evacuations will be called for New Orleans by Sunday. With a big, powerful hurricane, I'd much rather be out of the way before the traffic jams start.
Cadillac
Not only will it destroy New Orleans, imagine the possibilities when you factor the environmental damage of all the oil rigs that pepper the LA coast. This makes for an even stronger argument to NOT drill off Florida's coast for oil. When was the last time a major hurricane hit the LA coast? New Orleans? Was it before most of these rigs were out there?

Originally posted by PewterPirate:

THIS is one of the reasons Floridians do not want drilling off our coast. Even more powerful was the picture that accompanied this piece in the paper. There appeared to be hundreds, perhaps thousands, of black dots (each dot signifying an oil rig) peppering the LA coast. We never want to look like the coast of LA.
Herr Tiggee
Ya know, warning New Orleans residents to get out is kinda moot here. I can't recall that we have any Outsports messageboard residents who call that area home. And that's somewhat odd on its own merits - NO has a gay population. Is it weird that none of them are visitors here?

EDITED: Just combed through the member profiles sorted by # of posts. The top 320 people (ranging from Joe in Philly to anyone with at least 100 posts), and NOT A SINGLE PROFILE that lists New Orleans as home.

Howdy! Just got power back after 25 hours. The island sustained lots of flooding, but still pretty lucky. Nothing major. We'll be back to abnormal in no time.

Southern Decadence may be in for some serious problems in NO.
