Similar to the visiting Toronto thread...my partner and I will be visiting Montreal the week after Christmas. What are the sites that can't be missed? What should be avoided? Any tips on great restaurants and the gay scene would also be greatly appreciated.

Montreal in December, dear Lord, man!

Seriously, I've only ever been in summer. The gay area is along St Catherines. Why don't you go onto Gay.com montreal and ask around there?

Dont miss the art gallery, and the cathedrals. Enjoy. My time in Montreal have always been "jump right in." Learn the pleasantries and they will love you.

Where are you staying? There are nice hotels in the old montréal, but it's not the best in terms of convenience if you want to visit the city.
Old Montréal is definitely an area to check out.

Ste-Catherine streets runs through the whole downtown part. The EAST part has the Gay village.

If you get a chance, go see a hockey game at the Bell Center.. it's an awesome experience (if you like hockey of course) smile.gif

any other questions, don't hesitate to ask me, i lived there 6 years. I know there are a few people on here who live there right now.

Montreal in December can be... chilly. But it's a fabulous city. Check out the Montreal webcams and the Tourism Montreal website (which has a section devoted to gay & lesbian travel).

Old Montreal is definitely worth seeing. Very charming and European. Stop in at basilica Notre-Dame de Montreal, a beautifully grand cathedral (Montreal is home to many wonderful churches). You can take a romantic horse and carriage ride, bundled under a blanket. There are also some very nice restaurants there, too.

When visiting Montreal (in warm weather) I always go to Mount Royal the park in the centre of the island. The park was designed by Fredrick Law Olmstead (who designed Central Park in NYC). There are stairs you can climb up the mountain to a lookout with beautiful views of the city, cycling paths, walking paths, etc. There is an illuminated cross on the peak.

The gay village on Ste-Catherine St. E. is worth visiting. St. Laurent, and St. Denis ( the Latin Quarter) streets nearby are happening streets for music, restaurants, shopping.

Ste-Catherine West and Sherbrooke are the downtown shopping, hotel and museum areas.

At the site of Olympic Stadium is the biodome nature museum.

Almost everything is accessible by subway, although you should take a cab to the casino.

And don't forget: John Lenon and Yoko Ono staged their famous bed-in in the Queen Elizabeth hotel in Montreal, and recorded Give Peace a Chance.

My firt post on this board !

Montréal , if there is some snow , will be beautifull between Chrismas and New-Years.

Be sure to bring warm clothes and something hot for your feet.

The whole downtown erea of the city is all indoors with underground passges to go almost anywhere.

The city should be beautifull for the holydays. Make sure you go to the Chalet on top of the mountain for the view on the city., specialy after sundown.

Bring your highschool french ( or phrase book) and learn the basic hello , thank you ! Most people do speak englih , but will love you for trying.

If you need any info , e-mail me throug this site... I will be pleased to answer. I might even find time to show you and you BF around ! , Who knows !
