MIAMI -- A 16-year-old from Florida who traveled to Iraq on his own without telling his parents was put on a flight home Friday, the U.S. Embassy said, while warning Americans of the dangers of undertaking similar journeys.

Farris Hassan , of Fort Lauderdale, had been under the care of the U.S. Embassy after being on his own in Iraq for several days.

\"I'm going to hug him. He's my little angel,\" his mother, Shatha Atiya, said Friday after learning he was on his way home. \"I'm exhausted, I'm very anxious. I'm grateful he's out of Iraq.\"

He's lucky his mom didn't smack the hell out of him.

Oh I have a feeling she might have enjoyed the break.

When we were in high school we thought we were being rebellious by cutting school to go to Six Flags.

Anyway, it is amazing in this age of heightened security that this kid could do all this travel without somebody trying to stop him. But where the hell did he get the money for this trip? It's not like Jet Blue flies to Kuwait.

I wondered the same. Where did he get all that money, as I am sure there are no $99 fares to the middle east. Also, if it was that easy for a 16 year old to get over there, how hard could it be for terrorists to get over here?

Gosh Erik, you provide a perspective I never gave thought to! I never knew they had a Miller Beach in the Middle East! You teach me something new every day, oh wise master!

I wonder what they thought of him over there. He was arabic on the outside but obviously American if you heard him speak. He's lucky he didn't get killed at the Iraqi border by the taxi driver.

In other news - I see someone is happy about a certain coaching change. rolleyes.gif

I read this in an AP article at philly.com:

He took his U.S. passport along with $1,800 in cash. He said the money had come from a sum of $10,000 his mother had given him after he gave her some stock tips that brought a 25 percent return.

What I wanna know is how a 16 year old can be missing "for a couple of hours", yet in reality be on a plane flying to Europe without any parental consent?

Momma and Daddy didn't realize he was missing until he called them from Kuwait?????

Don't minors have to have parental consent to purchase plane tickets, get visas, etc....???

Something isn't exactly right about all this....

I have yet to read one piece on this "news item" where someone asks the parents, how the hell did he do all this without your knowledge, consent, etc....and your son is missing for how long before you decide to call the police????

I've lived in Iraq and Kuwait....you DON't just get on a plane and go there....I had to have a bout a zillion shots and my parents had to sign every document that had my name on it.....

I smell a rat somewhere....

I think I smell a movie about this. Don't know how it'll work out, but I think someone will somehow make a movie of this. Well, maybe...

Come on, we need a title! Farris Hassan's Days Off? Iraq Alone? Pretty In a Burqa? The Baghdad Club?
