Gay Man in Coma After Calif. Beating

LOS ANGELES -- A 34-year-old gay man was in a coma after he was beaten up by a man wielding a baseball bat and a metal pipe in the city's West Hollywood gay and lesbian stronghold.

Investigators said they were treating as a hate crime the vicious beating of Treve Broudy and his friend, Edward Lett. The two men were attacked on the street shortly after midnight on Monday after embracing each other following dinner together.

"We are treating this as a high priority, not only as an assault but as a hate crime," said West Hollywood sheriff's deputy Lynda Castro. "This involves two gay men in a city with a significant gay population. Any attack like this is horrific."

Broudy was struck on the back of the head, then kicked and punched. He was in critical condition in a coma after undergoing two brain surgeries. Lett, 22, was treated for minor injuries.

I wonder why the article isn't online now. Just a glitch or what? I'll have to pick up the paper and see what it says.

As for the California incident: I can't help but think it's time we started going around and assaulting straight couples the same way thugs attack gay people. Maybe THEN they'd learn.

Oooohhhh, yeah, kind of a queer version of the Black Panthers! "Deal with the more moderate elements of our movement or deal with us".

DISCLAIMER: Only kidding, I abohr violence etc. etc.

Actually, when I joined Queer Nation, I was a bit disappointed that they were so tame. I thought that it was going to be a lot more in-breeders-faces but it was mostly kiss-ins at Barney's Beanery in WeHo (they were notorious for having a sign that said "Fags Not Welcome"--in West Hollywood).

I'm always very, very cautious about Public Display's of Affection and have taken some static for it. You know what? I'd rather be seen as a closet case rather than having a lead pipe up the side of my head.

Anti-Gay Attack Is Alleged at Howard U.

By Amy Argetsinger
Washington Post Staff Writer

Howard University is investigating allegations that a gay student was beaten and taunted by several members of the school's marching band, officials said yesterday.

Darryl Payton, 18, said he was attacked Tuesday night and was treated at the university's hospital for injuries that included a swollen jaw and bruises -- one with the imprint of a trumpet valve.

A Howard instructor said he tried to be a peacemaker and was punched in the face even after he had identified himself as a staff member. "I was really surprised," said Luqman Salim, an instructor and technician in the theater program. "What they did was crazy."

No one has been arrested.

....
A D.C. police spokesman confirmed that an officer visited Payton in the hospital. He said that although the campus police are handling the matter, the D.C. police gay and lesbian liaison unit has offered to assist in the investigation.

Payton, a sophomore from Los Angeles, said he was leaving the fine arts building about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday when he encountered several of the band's horn players practicing in the hallway.

After he accidentally bumped into a female band member, Payton said, other band members started shouting "faggot" and other anti-homosexual slurs. As he tried to walk through, he said, a group crowded around him.

Salim, a foreman in the theater's costume shop, said he happened on the scene as the group seemed to be closing in on Payton. "They were about to attack him," Salim said. "I said: 'Hey, I work here. What's the problem?' "

Instead of backing off, Payton and Salim said, some band members starting hitting them with fists and musical instruments. "We were up against a wall," Payton said. "We were bent over, and they were hitting our backs."

Payton said the group that attacked him consisted mostly of male students.

Campus police officers went to the scene and took a report. Both Payton and Salim complained that officers did not make immediate arrests. But Salim said yesterday that he has met with administrators and that it appears the school is taking the matter seriously.

It was unclear yesterday whether campus officials would take action against anyone -- or, if so, what the action might be.

Although D.C. police reserve the right to investigate possible crimes on campuses, they often defer to campus officials, who are able to use punishments such as suspension or expulsion to deal with infractions that might not be suited to criminal prosecution.

Howard's student-conduct code does not specifically prohibit "hate speech," as do the rules on some campuses. It does prohibit expressions of discrimination, assault and battery. A campus judicial board can impose penalties ranging from a warning to expulsion.

Sterling Washington, president of an organization for gay and bisexual students at Howard, said that gay students have been harassed occasionally but that "acts of violence are out of character."

Salim said he hopes to see his attackers punished, possibly suspended. "With attitudes like that, they have no place here," he said. "If I had waited 10 more minutes, that child might have been dead."

And there was another attack in West Hollywood...

Los Angeles Times
September 6, 2002
By Andrew Blankstein and Jessica Garrison, Times Staff Writers

WEST HOLLYWOOD -- A third man was attacked early Monday morning near the spot where a 33-year-old actor and a friend were beaten with a baseball bat and a metal pipe, Los Angeles County Sheriff's said Thursday.

Both incidents are being investigated as hate crimes, officials said.

Officials said the third victim came forward and made his report Thursday, after learning of the first attack, which left actor Treve Broudy in critical condition.

"It was the same night. The same street. The same exact modus operandi," said Deputy Donald M. Mueller of the West Hollywood Sheriff's Station.

The third victim, whose name was not released, was walking near the corner of Hilldale Avenue and Cynthia Street about 1:30 a.m. when a car pulled up and two men jumped out, Mueller said.

The 35-year-old West Hollywood resident was struck in the back of the head before he could escape and run toward busy Santa Monica Boulevard. His assailants chased him and hit him again before they fled. He suffered large bruises on the back of his head, but did not seek medical help, Mueller said.

The third victim made the report Thursday as officials held a news conference to release a composite sketch of one of three men alleged to have participated in the beating of Broudy and his friend, Edward Lett.

Meanwhile, outraged family members and a local business offered a reward of $35,000 for information leading to arrests in the beating of Broudy. And West Hollywood community officials announced unity marches tonight and Saturday night in response to the attacks.

Broudy's condition was upgraded to serious at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, four days after he and Lett were assaulted in the 8900 block of Cynthia about 12:20 a.m.

At a news conference Thursday, Sheriff Lee Baca called that crime an outrage and said the victims appeared to have been targeted because they were believed to be gay.

Sheriff's officials said that patrol deputies were actively searching for a 1987 or 1988 light brown or faded red, four-door Nissan.

The vehicle, authorities said, is described as having tinted rear windows and may have California license plates with the partial numbers 3SDO or 3SOU.

Sheriff's Detective John Kniest said the department was investigating the incident as a hate crime because of the location and timing of the attack, which took place just after Broudy and Lett had embraced.

Kniest said other evidence also pointed toward a hate crime, but he declined to release details. Mueller said the second attack was also being investigated as a hate crime.

In addition to the beating inflicted on Broudy, the attackers smashed two windows on Lett's car and hit him on the arm as he sped away, Captain Lynda Castro said.

Two witnesses driving by saw Broudy struck with a metal pipe and kicked. They flashed their headlights and the attackers fled, sheriff's officials said.

"We want to show that the business owners and the residents -- we're just not going to put up with this," said David Cooley, owner of the Abbey, a West Hollywood restaurant that put up $10,000 of the reward.

City officials plan to distribute copies of the sketch in West Hollywood bars this weekend.

Steve Martin, mayor pro tem of West Hollywood, said the attack left his community rattled and determined to do more to combat discrimination against homosexuals.

"It just really brings home the reality of some of the mindless hatred that hangs over our lives," said Martin, who is gay.

If we look at this as a form of terrorism, well, shouldn't there be retaliation against terrorists?

These attacks are horrifying and unconscionable.

If the students at Howard are positively identified, after due process they should at the very least be expelled and Payton and Salim should press charges in the District of Columbia.

In the case of the West Hollywood attacks, I think the attackers should be prosecuted not only under assault and related laws, but also under any hate crime and civil rights statutes that exist. Prosecute them to the fullest extent of all the laws.

Although the news accounts point out that police often defer to university authorities for crimes on campus, it is incredible to me that the DC police did not arrest anyone, particularly if the victims knew or could recognize the assailants.

We will never get past these types of outrageous crimes until the straight community takes them, and our lives, seriously. To dismiss this as a campus matter seems like the police are condoning the attitudes behind it. DC has worked hard to improve relations between the police and the gay community, but suspended training on gay issues for veteran officers - only new ones receive it. Perhaps they will change their minds after this attack, and the execution of two transgendered SE residents a couple of weeks ago.

It really does not surprise me here on the East Coast. I attend Virginia Commonwealth University here in Richmond, VA and my first year on campus I was beat up. When I reported it to the VCU police they could not do anything because it was not on campus and told me I could try and report it to the City Of Richmond, but they would probably ignore it. I called them and set up an appointment. When I met with a cop they told me they could not do anything because, "I was asking for it!" I even had the guys license plate number. They attended the University of Richmond. Higher Education is generally fairly equal but, recently it has turned away form that when it comes to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, trans-gender, and questioning persons. Richmond, being the capital of the south is very discriminatory! VCU though is generally pretty liberal on all issues but, when it comes to protecting themselves that is not the case.

Is there a gay rights group on campus or in the area. There must be someone who keeps track of "unreported" crimes like this. At least you should be able to register your experience with the Human Rights Campaign.
Jason Cottrell
I was the president of the Sexual Minority Student Alliance here on campus! We posted flyers all over campus and talked to the VCU PD and were told over and over, without the support of state legislature, there is no protection against gays and lesbians. We finally have the democratic governor, but he is to busy cleaning up the mess from from the past two governors in terms of budget that he can't focus on human needs.

Why, sodomy is a felony in Virginia, doncha know?

Proof, yet again, of how insidiously awful sodomy laws are. The Legislature & campus could, with some justification, say that they are not in the business of protecting criminals etc.

Only 14 more states to go to get rid of those pesky sodomy laws for good.

Assault is still a crime. It doesn't matter if the victim himself is a criminal, particularly if the victim was not engaged in a criminal act when the assault took place (i.e. if someone is breaking into your house, it might technically be assault if you decked him, but would probably not be prosecuted as such) But the victims here (neither of which have actually been identified as gay) were not engaging in sodomy in the halls. One accidently bumped into a person and the other attempted to control the situation using his authority which was ignored. This is the perfect case for the gay community to tell the religious right to put up or shut up. If the religious right isn't one hundred percent behind the prosecustion of these criminals, they are showing the lie that is at the heart of their specious arguments against protective laws for sexual minorities. It is not a special right to have our attackers see jail time. It is not a special right to be able to walk through the halls of this nations institutions of higher learning without being harrassed. It is not a special right to see justice done. However there is a notable lack of right wing, anti crime fervor for the apprehension and incarceration of these criminals (granted, if they are all indeed first offenders, prison time is unlikely). So if the campus were to use the justification that homosexual acts are criminal, and they are not in the practice fo protecting criminals from just prosecution, they must do two things, install survialance equipment in all the dorm rooms so they can know who is and who isn't worthy of protection, and hand over the criminals who beat two men into the hospital.

Anybody heard an update on Trev Broudy's condition? Nothing's been mentioned in the online L.A. Times for a few days. Is there a gay weekly there?

My prayers go out to the poor guy in LA, i hope he has a full recovery. Its very sad that in 2002 this stuff is still going on.
Stay strong and keep the faith

From yesterday's Los Angeles Times (reg req), an update on Trev Broudy, the young man who was violently attacked in West Hollywood last September. "Trev, of course you know that a major part of your brain was removed..."
bluebird48234
Excerpt:

"He is our Matthew Shepard except he lived," West Hollywood Councilman John Duran said of the passion with which his city rallied in support.

Sad, so very sad.

A couple of years has passed since this gay bashing in West Hollywood. Does anyone know how Trev Broudy is doing today. Has he remained in West Hollywood?

You are right Feverdog, and if I am remembering the Advocate interview with Broudy correctly, he has permanent memory and vision problems that will in all likelihood prevent him from ever acting again - but apparently voice-over work is another avenue for him.

I found a recent model shot of him. Despite what happened, he seemed to bounce back physically.
