Okay I'm as tired of some of the end zone celebrations as many others are. And the whole TO thing is out of control. But there are a couple of things that really drive me nuts.

First, the punters trying to drop the ball inside the five yardline rather than give it the old coffin corner. 98% of the time the ball rolls into the end zone and the opponent gets the ball at the 20.

Second, guys that intecept the ball in the end zone and then insist on running it out. Yeah a 105 yard INT return is exciting, but again 98% of the time he is tackled inside the 10.
GatorJamie
The fact that there is no real "halftime" in pro ball.

Hello, halftime is for THE BAND!
Marc
In the NFL, I've never cared for the 'sudden death' rule in overtime. Each team ought to be guaranteed an offensive opportunity. Also don't like the fact that the last two minutes of NFL games often take the equivalent of a full quarter to play (OK, I'm exaggerating, but not that much), and it seems that most games now stretch beyond three hours to complete.

In the CFL, I don't like the single point (sometimes called a 'rouge') awarded to the kicking team for a missed field goal (applies only if the receiving team doesn't run the ball out of the end zone). However, I don't mind the single point being conceded by a receiving team in the end zone on a third-down punt.
Joe in Philly
I hate when people complain about the sudden death rule in OT, which is fine just as it is. wink

I hate when they have a TV commercial break after a score, and then come back for the ensuing kickoff and then go to commercial again!
Maddog
I'm tired of being statted to death.

Take a breather boys...watch the game a little bit with us. We can handle a few seconds without most consecutive this or blah blah quarterback is 22-9 when he takes a bath in the morning instead of a shower. I mean gee-willikers!

Amen - and please God, maybe just a little bit of objective and educated discourse about the game that is actually playing out down there on the field?!

When I was a small kid I used to listen to Baseball and Football Games on my little transistor radio. The announcers were so good that I could picture EXACTLY what was happening in the entire stadium. When was the last game you could say that about?

I too hate the OT rule.

Also the amount of TV timeouts is ridiculous. Then it's the same TV ass****s who bitch and moan when 60 minutes is delayed cause the last 5 minutes took 35 to play.

Finally, too many penalties. Less flags should be thrown unless it has a direct impact on the play.

I'm tired about hearing about the Vick brothers. It's almost guaranteed that any college or pro game you put on they're bound to be mentioned. The VT game the week before the Miami game was the worst (forget who they played). It was the worst b/c Mike Vick was there watching the game. I swear 90% of the coverage was on the two brothers. Just horrible.

My other pet peeve, is when I'm in the stands at a game, and the only thing the chick behind me knows is that "# so and so has a cute butt". Yeah, he does, but this is football, we're not here to check out the players butts, (well maybe a little), but you can do that at American Eagle.

this usually applies to monday night football.

I hate the period in which the teams starting lineups are shown, and some of the players announce what elementary school or day care center they went to instead of the college they attended.

Well to be fair I'm guessing alot of them are naming the last school they actually did work in.

Or which prison they just got released from. Jamal Lewis, Federal Pen, Pensacola. Holla!

Why does every team need 8 captains to show up on the field for the coin toss? It takes 8 guys to decide "heads or tails"? Just say "heads," dammit!

Then, they all need to shake hands "hello there!" with the other team's 8 captains, and suddenly a Busby Berkeley number breaks out, with a hand shake, grip, flip, slap, pop, grip, clamp, clench, slap twice, bonk knuckles, slap low five, bonk bonk and here's your watch back, buddy.

Later that same day..., a coin is tossed in the air and 15 captains scratch themselves. Then, they all have to shake "buh-bye!" "I am about to bash your head in. Kisses!"

And if the coin toss is that important, why are we never told how it turns out? (It was "heads," wasn't it?) I'd be interested in knowing how each team is doing in the coin toss calling department this year. CU, have you crunched those numbers yet? smile.gif

Although I must say I'd be out there, too, for a chance to shake it up with Ed Hochuli.

Newspaper articles, television reports and internet stories demanding that I recognize what a perfect human being Tom Brady is. Kind, humble, smart, generous and just so special. And he is giving enough of himself to be constantly available for every possible media interview to emphasize his humility and regular-guy nature. Now 60 Minutes tells us he sees some even greater role for himself in the future. Its all getting to be a bit much.

I know it's for tv but it drives me nuts when there is a touchdown and extra point then a commercial break. then the kickoff then another commercial break. Like they need a break right after the kickoff? The Special Teams unit isn't even on defense or offense but maybe a few players! And the Monday Night Games keep going longer every year. I remember when they used to start at 9pm ET and end at 12AM ET. now it's like a 3 1/2 hour game all the time.

1. ESPN and ABC kill me how they can take one topic and run it into the ground, e.g., the return of Tedy Bruschi and the fact that Brett Favre is the only person in the world that has gone back to "work" after family tragedy.

2. Bonnie Bernstein on CBS trying to interview a coach on his way to the locker room for half time. "Coach, how did you feel after that blocked field goal and return touchdown put your team down 24 by half time?"

3. The 2 week gap between the championship games and the Super Bowl.

This is a Football and Hockey Pet Peeve.

I'm tired of both leagues ALLOWING it to be commonplace for athletes to try to injure another athlete during the course of the game.

After the Romo interview and the Bertuzzi incident, I'm amazed that these leagues haven't at least publickly denounced their connection to the fact that there are some players that play to end the season and in some cases the careers of other athletes.

These athletes as well as their families, friends, schools, teammates, etc. sacrifice so much during their lives for that person to even play in the college or professional arena. And then some goon gets an unspoken "okay" to try to break the guy's legs. I'm sorry but that seems insane to me.

Injuries are going to happen because both sports are so physical but I wonder what percentage would be avoided if the NFL and NHL formally enforced a "no goon" policy.

Maybe I'm in the minority here and maybe it would detract from the excitement of the game but it tears me up to see a man hurt on the field.

Magnified a thousand-fold when I hear it was probably intentional.

Okay at this bar I was just at they showed this DVD making of a French Naked Rugby Calendar which I'm sure you all have seen and I have this to say...

As God and Judi Dench as my witness if anyone and I mean anyone intentionally tries to injure any one of these self-sacrificing philanthropist aka rugger f**king studs, I will use my life savings to hunt you down and kill you like the bastard you are.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed this!

It also seems like every game I watch, some player achieves a "historic landmark" of some sort that's not really all that historic:

"He's the 15th player in NFL history to catch five receptions during the first game of November played west of the Mississippi River when the temperature is below 60 degrees."

Just how many people work in the NFL research library, anyway?
shep71
I can't abide by the announcers touting every player they talk about as "the best in the league", or "the best ever". I swear during the Panthers/Falcons game last week, Bill Maas must have made that statement about at least 5 Falcons players and 3 Panthers players. I mean enough already.

And that damn Maas just talked so much during that game. On at least three occasions, he spoke over the outro to a commercial. Shut the f*ck up already!!! and let us watch the game.

Oh, I feel a bit better now. wink

My whine is along the lines of "too many stats", but it goes further.

I like watching football. I like watching two relatively well-matched teams go at it. I like cheering the good plays and shaking my head at the bad ones.

It would seem I am now in a very distinct minority. Most football watchers appear to fall into one of two groups: rabid your-team-here fans, and weekend handicappers. I'll throw fantasy footballers into the second group for simplicity's sake.

In order to cater to these two groups, every game has to be dissected into atoms beforehand. Will so-and-so's knee injury spell doom? Can such-and-such be the one to put your team over the top? The quarterback didn't shave this week - was this a good move? And how does Bill Nye the Science Guy feel about the new roof on the stadium?

Then, during the game, each play and each of the player's stats need to be updated and discussed at length. Hey, they're using the running back for short gains for first downs - will this anger the running back? Will his manager sue? If you have him on your fantasy team, can you renegotiate? And how is this team doing in the red zone in November? How about the yellow zone? The T-Zone?

It's halftime. Let's go to the three guys in suits in the plexiglass room to go over what we just went over, and give each a reason to explain in great detail why his prediction isn't coming true. Oh, you!

Back to the game. This overlaid graphic shows us clearly who's giving the best bang for the buck, and according to the flashing arrow over the cornerback, his contract is about up. (Insert coins for more time.) Back to the booth so our commentators can divvy up the stats some more, and give more ammo to the idiots who like to find "sure things". (Did you know this team is undefeated when the other team's tight end has an X in his last name? IT NEVER FAILS!) The game winds down, and it's all over but the crying. Well, that and the post-game analysis, where the guys in suits will explain what it is we just saw, what it means, and how it fits in with the history of the Western world.

Apparently, there was a game going on, too, but I kinda missed it.

I like instant replay, but I hate the way it's handled.
Why is it that I always make the correct call, from my couch, in less than ten seconds, but the officials, after informing the audience that a review is about to take place, after walking to the peepshow booth, after cutting to a commercial, after blowing any momentum the offense had, and taking a good five minutes or more, come back with the wrong call half the time? I think there should be a very qualified official in the booth who looks at every play and has sole discretion as to when the game can be stopped. In fact, I think that official should be me.

Teams throwing 5-yard passes on 3rd- or 4th-and-9 and hoping the receiver can get the extra yards (which they seldom do). My fave last week was Carolina throwing an 11-yard pass on 4th and 18 and the receiver STEPPING OUT OF BOUNDS!

Uh, the Colliseum in Oakland was a perfectly fine baseball stadium until Al Davis came back and made it into his nasty Masoleum. Plus, How do you think it is playing baseball on that surface, I can only imagine the bad hops infielders get.

FWIW, the A's have been trying to get a stadium deal for more than ten years. It hasn't happened yet and probably won't for awhile.

I'm tired of the media and teams blaming their loss on a missed last-second FG attempt. Last night's 'skin game is just the latest example.

Headline on the front page of the Post this a.m.: "Redskins Lose to Vikings on Last-Minute Field Goal"

Font page of the Sports section; "Kicking Themselves: Redskins Fail to Send Game into Overtime on Missed FG"

No. The 'skins lost the game because, let's see: they failed to stop the Vikes on numerous crucial 3rd downs; they were 1 for 4 scoring when in the red zone (and Danny-boy Snyder is paying his offensive coordinator $2 million a year for that?!)

The missed field goal was just the last bad thing they did.

And who the F-- cares about Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise, A quick howdy do to a celeb at a game is OK --btu that went on and on. Next Monday night-- Itunr the sound off. Buggers

There are only 3 teams left that have to deal with that. Oakland, Minnesota, and Miami ... which in a few years will be trimmed down to Oakland, since Minnesota's getting a new stadium and either the Marlins will get a new one or leave Miami. All of that was a product of those multi-purpose cookie cutter stadiums built in the '60s-'70s

Sorry didn't mean to single out the A's. That was just the game I was watching last night.

But in this day and age of technology, why can't they come up with a temporary turf solution for the infield?

And declutter the screen! Show the game rather than information on how each play impacts a fantasy league.

Did anyone else think the Chargers/Raiders game was better presented than the Vikings/Redskins game last night? The broadcasters on the late game seemed a lot more smooth and informative than Tirico (how many times did he welcome us to "new era in Monday night football,") Theismann, and Kornheiser. Even Dick Vermeil was good.

Good Hands
Agree about want to see more of the game and hearing less talk/talk/talk. Especially when, in the midst of the constant chatter they didn't talk as much about an important play and call as they could have last night in the Skins-Vikes game. I thought the refs made a bad call against the Skins' safety (his name escapes me right now) who hit the receiver while the ball was still in the air and his feet had literally just hit the ground. Bad call. He hit him in the action, on the field, while the ball was in play. Getting back to the announcers....they didn't come out and take a position: good call or bad call. They did speculate about the player's rep and whether the refs were influenced by it, but not about whether the call was good or not.

And, personally, I get so tired of seeing the owner of the team during a game. Or of the constant camera jerking and close-ups that are so close-up you can't actually see around the face of the one subject...even though he's on a team of 11 or talking with coaches/other players. I guess that kind of non-stop switching, movement, jumping back and forth is someone's view of a good presentation. To me it's a lot of flashing around, but detracts from getting a feel of the game.

Have to say....I prefer hearing the crowd noise of most of the commentary, so I don't mind that. lol

Most of the Charger board was glad that Nessler/Vermeil/Jaworski/Bernstein was there instead of the sideshow. Just from the way they are/cover other events, you know they're there not to be the show, just a part of it.

This may be a pre-pet peeve but I saw it happen twice this weekend.

With the new roughing the kicker rules I saw two kickers take full-on dives when they were barely touched. One of them would have shamed the World Cup divers.

Both rushers only got the 5 yard "annoying the kicker" penalty instead of the major 15 yards infraction but it was 5 yards the kicking team did not deserve.

Dark uniform pants. And how some of the players wear their jerseys. The huge players usually have the sleeves tucked into their shoulder pads. Now if we can persuade the quaterbacks like Peyton to tuck them in and show off more of their guns.

As for the pants, give us more white, so we can see some jock lines. Oh did anyone catch the shot of a forty-niner with his jock band clearly present? Now that's what I am talking about ...

It's cool, I dig you on the Multi purpose thing 100% it's a liability for both baseball and football teams.

Well, about the only thing that they can do is either Astroturf, which 1)Kills players' knees, and also has been known to heat up to the point of causing second degree burns, or the FieldTurf stuff, which costs about a million bucks. It seems as though they're reluctant to go to an artificial surface in an outdoor stadium for whatever reason. I think they really should consider it, because it makes things a lot more manageable. IIRC, most of the indoor stadiums have gone to that, including the Metrodome. It definitely makes things a lot easier for changeovers and is better for players' knees.

Latest pet peeve...Ugh! These friggin' coaches calling time out to try and freeze these kickers has now backfired two weeks in a row. Last week Arizona called a TO and the kick would have been no good and the game would been over in regulation. Okay so the Cards still managed to win but still. Now today the raiders pull the same crap against the Jets. This game should be over but instead Feeley gets a second chance and makes it to send the game to OT. Change this rule!!

Mine has to be watching a football game with Ron Winters or jeff Tripplette as the ref.

We all now that holding, illegal contact and other nit-pitcky penalties occur on almost every single play.

Be smart when you call these plays. No one wants to watch a game with 25 friggen penalties.

I unbiasedly watched the Packers/Colts today, and the amount of nitpicky penalties was laughable. It totally detracts from trying to watch an NFL football game.

One penalty was actual announced as "I'm penaliing #23 on the Colts for a non-football related gesture in trying to draw a false start". Give me a break. If the offense actually jumped, OK call it. But to give Green Bay a first down because of something like that is just moronic and it's not football.
