Do any of y'all love cars as much as me?

I was reading this item on Autoblog.com today and sorta chuckled....like this took a study?

All I'd have to do is look out into the parking lot of my gym and I could figure this one out.

Personally, I'm a Ford guy. wink

Subaru/VW/ BMW and Volvo eh?

On the whole, I think foreign cars have much greater aesthetic appeal. They just seem more stylish than most American cars, so maybe that's part of it.

Damn! I thought this was going to be a Gael Garcia Bernal thread. You guys are talking about cars...geeesh! eek!

I hear that argument alot...its all subjective, I suppose...

Interesting list recently released by the US Government regarding 2005 automobiles with the highest number of complaints filed with them:

Of the top 15, 12 were imports....not including the Chrysler Crossfire which is made in Germany and based on a Mercedes platform with a MB engine as well.

The complaint index is based on a ratio of the number of complaints for each vehicle to the sales of that vehicle. The numbers represent relative index scores, not the number of complaints received. The complaint index score considers sales volume and years on the road. Lower index numbers are better.

Suzuki Verona 10,462

Volkswagen Touareg 3,240
Nissan Armada 2,383

Well think about all the advertising that Subaru does within the gay community as well. Personally, I am a Toyota man. Most recent brand I have owned, and if I ever get another car, it will be a Toyota without any hesitation what so ever.
smalltownboy
I suppose I support Ford for the same reason so many gay people support Subaru....

True or False? Ford Mo. Co. Supports GLBT?

Last summer, I went out and bought my latest Ford to support them during FOF's "boycott"....believe me, I let everyone know too...from my dealer on up.

Give me a Honda, Toyota, or Nissan any day...go Japan!!!

In my world cars come from Europe. I drive a Land Rover, myself.

They make cars in Japan?! Who knew???

I regularly drive a Volvo station wagon, a Mercedez C class wagon, a Mercedez G500 and my beau's Jeep. The Mercedez station wagon is simply the best car I regularly drive--amazing control and speed, acceleration. The drawback to the car--too many sensors, and thereby too many quick trips to the garage to have it tinkered with, for lightbulbs burned out or air not cool enough, etc. And the car is just a little low.

the Volvo at first feels like a great car, but the more I drive it, the less great it feels, it somehow feels less authentically a great car, only a good car.

The G500 is a behometh, hate driving it.

Up until '99 I lived in the city and never needed a car. What happy times those were. In '99 as I was preparing to move to the burbs I bought my first car, a VW. I suppose the grass is always greener etc, etc. but I don't have much good to say about it.

They're notorious for the malfunctioning window regulators. That's when you're on your way to work and go to the drive-thru for hot coffee on a frigid February morning and the window won't go back up and you immediately must detour to the dealership because you can't take the highway into the city in the cold with the window down. These things happen but it's happened to me three times and the thing only has two operable windows.
Add to that the sunroof frame that had to be replaced (another moving glass part, hmmmm), the hatch lock which wouldn't stay locked so the hatch kept popping open at inconvenient times, the driver-side door lug that popped out when I pulled the handle as I was getting in one day.

I suppose I should be happy these malfunctions aren't related to the way the car runs (i.e., important stuff like the engine). I've almost always been able to rely upon getting where I'm headed. Although, there was that time the fuel line disconnected and I had to have the car towed to the dealer for repair and lately it's been drinking oil (they're notorious for that as well).

Right now the brakes need work and the catalytic converter needs replacing, also, I think, the fan belt. It screeches when I start 'er up, but I've gotten used to it.

Being the first car I've ever owned (and I expect the last) Does that sound typical for six years of car ownership?

Ford, Toyota, VW they're all satan's minions as far as I'm concerned.
millerbeach
I can't imagine ever buying a foreign car, no matter if it is made here in the states or overseas. I guess I have a different perspective considering I live in the "Rust Belt". I have always been very happy with my American made cars. Maybe I have just been lucky, but I've experienced great performance with all of my cars. I've owned GM, Ford and Chrysler...happy with them all.

I love this thread! Here in SA we had a survey last year for the "gayest" car, with the following more or less the findings: -

  • Peugeot 206cc - the convertible with the dishes drying rack looking backside came first hands down.
  • Renault Megane - the hatchback model
  • Mini Cooper
  • Just about any model of Porche
  • Audi A3 and A3 Sportback

The others were mainly German Sedans, BMW, Audi, and VW mostly.

The funny thing is how accurate it is, my B/F drives a Megane, I have a VW, and within our friends theres all of the above listed - particularly the Peugeot, alot of A3's and plenty of BMW sedans, M3 sports models etc.

I have a Silver 2005 Impala with a Spoiler,moon-roof and one of the finest stereo systems I have ever had the pleasure of listening to!This is the first new car I have ever had and it's been a real treat!

I'm with Puschkin, my world is inhabited with European cars, Germany to be exact. After 15 years with BMW, this year I switched to Mercedes. The only American car I've ever had was my first car given to me by my father, that was a 67 Camaro, wish I still had it! wink
SFDutch
It's nice to see mainstream companies advertising here at Outsports, but somebody needs to talk to their marketing departments. I mean, really, the Ford Fusion????? sad.gif The Chrysler Sebring sedan????? huh.gif What self-respecting gay person would be seen in one of those cars??!!!???

The only brands you see parked in the Castro are Miatas, Hondas, BMWs, Mini Coopers, Saabs and of course those ever-so-masculine pickup trucks. And apparently lesbians have stopped buying Subarus, cuz you never see them anymore.

Which got me to thinking, what is the current hot gay vehicle?

American car manufacturers, get your asses in gear and give us gay customers something to buy! And hire some gay people in your design groups!

I don't know if I'd condsider it a "hot gay vehicle", but I certainly LOVE the Pontiac Solstice. And for the base price of approx $19k you can't go wrong (considering that it's a sports car). I've seen just a handful of them 'round LA...My only concern would be the fact that it's an American car. I wouldn't want to purchase a car that's gonna have tons of mechanical problems down the road. But it is hawt looking, especially the convertible!

Well, interestingly...here are the top 10 gay cars of 2007 as reported by gaylife.com

Top gay cars of 2007

Some of the cars on the list I like. The Scion tC, Porsche Cayman S, Cadillac Escalade, and Lexus S are all cars I like. Interestingly, Dodge has the top gay car for the trendy urban gay man...the Charger...a car I see being driven by many black men in the city. In 2006 it was the Chrysler 300M....another car I see being driven by many black men in the city. Both cars are popular with several gay homothugs I know. Interestingly, I didn't see Land Rover on either 2006 or 2007 list. I drive a Land Rover and I know quite a few gay men with one. They're not too big but make a statement and are stylish.
millerbeach
What? My 1995 Ford Contour is not on this list? How dare they! The salesman told me it was the gayest car on the lot...I thought I'd score big-time with a cool, 1995 Ford Contour! Man, fooled again!

My b/f has the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse. I've nicknamed it the Mitsubishi Compensator. wink.gif

The Scion xB is what the B/f drives (after a few repairs from an accident a few weeks back). I have also discovered that of his four closest gay friends here, three of them also drive this exact same thing! What are the chances? blink.gif

I'd always been led to believe that the gay man's choices for vehicles were all from Volkswagen or Mazda Miata or anything in prostitute pink. My stereotypes for cars has been shattered.

As for myself, I drive a Ford Probe GT with 140,000 miles on it. sad.gif

Car Talk did a survey on this topic a few years (five or so?) back. They mention the new Beetle, but I can't remember when they were introduced.

As you know, the Pontiac Solstice has a sister car, the Saturn Sky. They are pretty sharp looking, but they weigh quite a bit more than the Miata. I wish they could lose some weight.

I guess I am a token lesbian, since I have a Subaru Forester, it has everything I could possibly want, leather, power everything, a monster sunroof, 6 disc in dash cd player etc, and I saved 20K off the price of the Mercedes I was looking at, which had all the same bells and whistles. Although I am going the gay yuppie route, I REALLY want a Land Rover, so I think that is going to be the second car once I move back to Philly part time in January.

I drive a 95 Disco that I bought brand new, and I love it. I've off-roaded it quite a bit, and it looks it, but that's what they are designed to do really, really well.

One downside is that it's a thirsty bitch at about 14 mpg combined highway/city -- premium only, please, at $3/gal. Put a lower grade of gas in it, and it coughs going up the hills in these parts.

A probe sounds interesting, but I don't know about one with 140,000 miles. biggrin.gif

I've got a Neon, held together with duct tape and glue. It did amazing in the last snowstorm, but now the fan is humming something fierce. I'm gonna keep driving until it does that cartoon thing where it sputters to a stop, and then completely falls to pieces.

LOL I think I am gonna.... Since my main business is at the beach, I want one car for down here to show properties, and another to keep in a lot in Philly so that I have transpo there. I am looking at leases on the LR3 right now. I paid off the Subaru, and sold my Jag, so........ LOL I just feel all durty and Will and Grace.....

I'm perfectly happy with my 2005 Impala LS.It is by far the most comfortable car I have ever driven and it handles beautifully with decent milage. It's big enough to make me feel safe and fast enough for when I need it to be. smile.gif

I love my 2001 Buick Regal GS supercharged baby (aka Planet Express Ship). I bought it with a couple extra feature packages, so it literally has everything on it. My friends called it a granny car until they got in it for the first time and were smashed into the back seat when I hit the gas (makes it fun to race little punks who think they have a better car than I do!). It's charcoal with a sort of tan strip along the bottom and tinted windows. The heated leather seats are awesome in the winter also. Gets good highway miles, but not so hot in town. Who cares, tho? I look good in it! biggrin.gif

After graduation, I bought a Jeep and love it. Driving something that will get me where I am going (in the woods or out on the town) is the most important thing for me. Now that it is 4 years old, it have a few scratches on it, I feel more comfortable in that than anything else. Hell, who wouldn't look good in one of the hot cars on the top list? It is the person who has the confidence to drive the "crapola" cars like the Focus and Probe that are attractive to me.

I took a look at the letters they got (btw, LOVE those Car Talk guys), and the funniest, by far, was:

For lesbians, it's easy. Hands’ down, the new Chevrolet Avalanche. This thing looks like a movie prop from a post-apocalyptic Mad Max movie. There are NO men, gay or straight, butch enough to drive one of these.

I think I snarfed Diet Coke on that one - and the writer is totally right on that one.

As for me, I am currently driving a 1995 VW GTI (or actually not driving it, because it developed an electrical problem on the way back from New England yesterday) and am in the market for a new car this year - I'm aiming at the totally non-trendy small hatchback segment (and that includes the Ford Focus), which make the perfect city car, but are not nearly as hot as a Miata. Of course, when I get in a Miata my head is above the windshield line, so I don't think that would be a practical car for me anyway. laugh.gif

I just paid off my 2002 GMC Sierra. That was my Christmas gift to me.
millerbeach
Woo Hoo for you! Nothing feels better than paying off a car! Well, maybe some things feel better, but you know what I mean.

My boyf wants to trade in his El Dorado for a Saab convertible. He's a big guy and the Saab is the only ragtop he can fit into.

I like his Caddie though - it's the biggest car I'd drive.
Lksimcoe
I drive a 2003 Ford Explorer (Eddie Bauer edition) and love it.

Whe my parents died in 1998, I kind of had a mid life crisis all at once,
and bought an Expedition. Well, in 2001, when gas was hovering around .79/litre, and my
monthly gas bill was over $500, I traded it for a loser cruiser, (mini van).

I drove it for 2 years until I decided that even though I am a miserable failure
as a gay man, I do still have my pride, so I traded and got the Explorer.

And on cold mornings, the heated leather seats are sooooooo nice.

I have no intention of going any smaller. To go to the cottage, there is always
luggage (okay, 2 small bags), food, beer, and 2 very large dogs. Also that the last
1.5 kilometers are on a really shitty dirt road (I didn't start the tractor at all last year to
smooth it out), I also need clearance.

And besides, I put in a Bose sound system, so when I turn off onto our road, I put on
Queen, turn up the volume, and basically let the lake know that another mad queen has arrived,
and if we've left late on a Friday, we don't get there till midnight, which means that the music echo's across
the lake.

I love being a bitch.

I drive a 98 Honda Accord EX v6 coupe. It has just under a 100,000 miles on it and the best thing is its paid for! The only thing this car doesn't have are heated seats and fog lights.
Honda's are so reliable I won't need a car for 10 years even then it'll probably still run fine.
bear321
We are getting ready to purchase a vehicle for my partner and we are stuck between getting a Honda Element and a Scion xB. There is a big different in price. About $4000 actually. Does anyone have a Scion xB or Honda Element that can tell me the one thing they DON'T like about them? smile.gif

What is it about gay men and Mini Coopers? After seeing "The Italian Job," I knew there were two things in life I must have - Mark Walberg and a Mini. Only one is achievable, unfortunately. I currently own a 2003 Toyota Corolla. It is the perfect practical car. Good-sized interior and trunk for a compact car, amazingly reliable, low maintenance costs, and very fuel-efficient. There is no rational reason to buy a new car. Yet, when the warranty expires next March (bought an additional 2 years), I will shoot over to the local dealership faster than a human cannonball to spec out a Mini Cooper S down to the very last detail. Hmmm, detail-oriented ... maybe that's the appeal.

The other oddly gay cars are Range Rovers. What is it about them that appeals so much to gays? Maybe it's their ruggedness (same reason we're so obsessed with "straight-acting", whether or not we're willing to admit it) coupled with exquisite refinement (sort of a "Queer Eye Does Survivor" concept). I had an old Range Rover for a couple of years. Gawd, that car was a nightmare (maintenance, repairs, breakdowns, never-ending!), yet I absolutely loved it.
millerbeach
I just got a new car! Woo-Hoo! It's a 2006 Chevy Malibu LT V-6. I am not used to a V-6! It's nice to have something really happen when you hit the gas. I just love it...gold in color, fully-loaded, with a sunroof! Remote start, which rocks to no end, power everything. The only bad thing is now, after 7 years, I have a car payment. After what I put up with during the final days of my 1995 Ford Contour, I can deal with a payment. If I drive a Malibu, does this mean I am still gay, or do I have to turn in my card?

It means you might have saved a few more American's jobs! I know it feels weird to have any kind of car payment.I'm leasing the Impala that I got in 2005 but it is a great car.Very comfortable and very fast!
Enjoy the new car!

I am a simple boy with simple taste... or maybe no taste.

I have a 2002 Ford Taurus. My dad works for Ford- so I need to support them somehow through this mess.

I've just never had the luxury to purchase a vehicle or been into worrying about my vehicle getting me from here to there....

Although I fell in love with the Saturn VUE when I was looking back at the time I bought my Ford.

Okay, we bit the bullet and bought a new 2007 Honda Element. The color is "Atomic Blue Metal." We drove it off the lot yesterday. I did tons of research online through Consumer Reports and we went into the local dealership all prepared to do battle for the lowest price. I placed the Consumer Reports notes on the desk in front of our salesman and said this is the price we work from. He took a look at it, keyed in a few numbers on his calculator and said. Okay sure, can we get you sign the papers today? I was floored. It was too easy. We came down off the sticker price almost $3000. Sweet!! We opted for the 3 years 0.90% financing. We can live with that for 3 years. Funny, on the note it says our total finance charge for the life of the note will be $208. Cheap financing. biggrin.gif

We had looked at several used Elements but they hold their price so well that it was worth it to us to get the new one because the price really wasn't that different and we get the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty. We opted for the extended warranty that takes it out to 7 years/100k miles bumper to bumper.
