Full Version: Mariucci mouthing off

Mariucci is upset because he thinks Steve Spurrier ran up the score and used his starters (particularly the line) too long. Mariucci is an ass.

The Redskins starting offensive line (ie, a line with Chris Samuels and Jon Jansen) was on the field for 7 points. The other 31 were scored with various assortments of backups on the line. The top 3 receivers, Gardner, Green and Lockett didn't play, at all, beyond the first quarter. Stephen Davis played for ONE series and didn't touch the ball. And look at who the Redskins had at quarterback, Rosenfels and Weurffel, two people a lot of these so-called experts say can't quarterback in the NFL.

The Redskins starting defense played for two series. After that, it was all backups. Darrell Green is the third cornerback and he didn't play beyond those first two series. Almost the entire game was played with backups, yet they still had seven sacks. If it was our backups against their backups, why didn't they score more than seven points?

According to the AP story at espn.com, Mariucci didn't run a single play that the Redskins couldn't have seen on game film from last season. Of course, Spurrier didn't run a single play the 49ers couldn't have been seen on game film from the last 12 years at Florida. I've seen Florida play a few times over the years and there are a lot of plays Spurrier didn't run, namely no 3 wide outs, 4 wide outs or 5 wide outs.

Mariucci needs to stop making excuses and work on his own problems.

I'm just glad Spurrier isn't in the SEC anymore!

His complaint is ridiculous. It's a preseason game with a new coach who wants to see what his personnel can do in his system.

I totally disagree with Joe. Nothing has changed for Coach Superior. He coached the game like he coached his Florida teams...with no respect for the other teams.

I don't buy Joe's assessment that the new coach wanted to find out more about how his players play. How can someone truly judge a person's talent when the opposing team is not a first string but more like 3rd and 4th string? How fair is that.

If Coach Superior doesn't watch it, other teams will pour it on against him when his team is down.

If Spurrier's reason for running up the score in an exhibition game is to get his jollies and not to get a good assessment of his players, then as an opposing coach I would be quiet and laugh on the inside because of his stupid strategy.

As a coach in a professional sport, Spurrier wouldn't mind, I'm sure, if opposing teams ran up the score during the regular season. I'd like to think that professional players would play their best even if the opposing coach isn't a total jerk.

"How can someone truly judge a person's talent when the opposing team is not a first string but more like 3rd and 4th string?"

Because the Redskins were using 3rd and 4th stringers, as well.

PCC, the Redskins were using first stringers in the 2nd half.

As I wrote in my initial post, the only first stringers the Redskins used in the second half was the offensive line. And I'm being very generous by calling that first string because beyond Chris Samuels and Jon Jansen, the tackles, the Redskins don't have set first stringers. The center and both guard positions are still very much in flux. And even in this instance, they were used for only the first series of the second half. I watched and re-watched the game.

See, these are lies that Mariucci is spouting. The 49ers were beaten by Danny Weurffel, Chris Doering (who is hot, btw), Denarian McCants, Darrius Thompson, backup running backs and backup offensive linemen, and all backups on the defensive side of the ball. Instead of admitting that his teams has problems, he's trying to distract people with this BS.

Re-read my first post to get an accurate portrayal of who was playing, and when they were playing, for the Redskins.

I would think that Mariucci would not be too upset with Spurrier's tactics for two reasons.
First, the 49ers have a better grasp on some of their defensive weak spots. Preseason is all about figuring out where your problem areas are. Mariucci has a much better idea of who will be cut from his secondary. And second, it gives his team a chance to return the favor when it really matters in the regular season.

It's not like Washington played their starters all the way. Besides, you can't judge players by how they do in practice. You have to see them in GAME situations. That's why they play pre-season games (although they could stand to get rid of a couple). And it was just a pre-season game. If it were a regular season game, it might be a different story.

And by the way, it really galls me to have to defend the Washington Redskins.

Sparty
strange coincidence, I have met both of these coaches. Spurrier did a corporate event for the company I worked for and I ended up driving him around; I participated in a golf event in Michigan with Mariucci (along with Tom Izzo). I have nothing but positive things to say about Mariucci, he is a class act. Spurrier was an ass.

Sparty, I couldn't agree more...|Lets face it if Mariucci had Owens and Garcia for an entire half, I could imagine seeing at least 21 more points put on the board...Does the NFC East play the NFC West this year...If not, I hope to see them face off in the playoffs...
