Rumor is that the Broncos and Redskins are in talks to send Clinton Portis to Washington for Champ Bailey. At this time of the year, that's a fairly big trade...

I heard on the radio this morning that there's a conflicting report of Bailey going to Seattle for Shaun Alexander.

Well God knows Denver needs help on defense and the Redskins need a RB. Add that the Broncos feel it's their system that makes their RBs great and I'm sure they feel they can afford to part with Portis.

The only ones cheering louder than Redskins fans for this trade to happen are Chiefs fans.
What a blunder this would be for the Broncos if they were to trade Portis for Bailey. A blunder I would like to see happen.
This tells me a couple of things 1) The contract demands/training camp boycott/ego, etc. distraction of Portis are something the Broncos don't want to deal with, and 2) They have the arrogance to believe that anyone they have left (Griffin, Droughns, or Galloway) can run behind that offensive line. Oh, by the way, Alex Gibbs is gone...
The running attack is an absolute necessity for Plummer to succeed in Denver. If this trade goes through all we'll hear from Bronco fans is how Quentin Griffin (one good game) is the second coming of Terrell Davis or Portis as they try to convince themselves that they haven't lost a major talent in the backfield.
Trading focal point of offense for 1/11th of defense.
Let's make this baby happen!

It isn't arrogance if you can back it up. So far, the results have borne out the fact that they can seemingly find 1,000 yard rushers under rocks somewhere.
Terrell Davis injured? Just plug in Olandis Gary for a 1,000 yard rookie season. Gary gets injured? No problem, here comes Mike Anderson to rush for over 1,000 yards. Anderson can't do it? Here comes Clinton Portis to the rescue.
We'll soon see what happens, won't we?

Is it true that Portis is only making around 400 thousand a year? that is the crazy part..Denver is not paying him what he is worth.. If I were him I would leave Denver if they are that cheap..who knows with him and Brunell in DC Joe Gibbs will probably make it to the Super Bowl before Denver...it seems like the big reason Mike Shanahan made it to the Super Bowl was Elway anyway

Portis is playing under the terms of his original contract. Nobody put a gun to his head and forced him to sign it. Plus he had an agent, so if anyone is to be blamed for his being "underpaid" it's him and his agent.

Denver is currently one of a handful of teams that is over the salary cap, right now, at $5.7m over. When Beurlein calls it quits, that will shave another million off that figure. They have some maneuvering to do to 1) Get under the league set figure, 2) Shop in the free agent market, and 3) Sign their draft picks. How they can afford "cap-wise" by paying Portis more and signing their restricted free agents is beyond me.
The cap problems forced Denver to ask RB Mike Anderson to take a pay cut, now he's asked for his release. Ephraim Salaam is going to have to restructure if he wants to stay. Look for the Broncos to ask John Mobley and Matt Lepsis to restructure, and possibly Trevor Pryce. The Broncos will likely have to put franchise tag on middle linebacker Al Wilson in order to retain him, which will have some cap impact with the increase in salary. If Shannon Sharpe retires, that will help. But it looks like a lot of manuevering will have to be done in Denver.
Oh, and DestinyRules, you just can't plug ANY running back into that system and have him rush for 3099 yards in just two seasons (what Portis has done). Right now, backup Quentin Griffin has 94 career rush yards with zero touchdowns. And remember, the Offensive Line guru bolted this year for greener pastures...
