I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the implications of being kicked out of a ROTC program are.

The issue arises is that one of my son's friends self identifies as bisexual. He is a freshman at Purdue here. He says one of his life goals is to be a Marine, hence enrolling in ROTC.

Apparently, he had an assigned "mentor" in the program to whom he confided some relationship issues. This "mentor" subsequently discussed this with the big poobah or whomever and he is out of the program.

I was happy he felt he could talk to me about this stuff. I advised him to talk to his department and to the dean of students office to make sure his side of the story gets in the "official" record.

My personal inclination is to burn down the ROTC offices on campus but as satifying as that might be, it is probably counterproductive in the long run. Does anyone have any experience with something like this so I can pass along the information?

There may be a financial penalty - for payback of what has already been spent by the military on his education - although if he is a freshman that may be waived. IIRC, when my friends were doing the ROTC thing one of them was dropped from the program his freshman year because he wanted to change his major. He had to leave school, because of the lost scholarship, but there wasn't any other penalty.

Because of the reason for your son's friend being dropped from ROTC, however, I think he will have to forgo the Marines unless/until DADT is repealed.
