Full Version: Death to Spammers

We all have something to be happy about as the holidays are upon us.

Virginia prosecutes the world's 7th most heinous spam criminal

Happy, happy news. Spamming, IMHO, is no less detrimental to society that hacking. Hang 'em all!
Trevor
We were talking about this at work yesterday. It's funny that the felony charges only have a fine of like $2,500. Which is'nt much. But you could get 5 years in jail. I can just see a guy going to jail and being asked "what are you in for?" "um, I'm a spammer." Can you say "Bitch?" <G>

There's a discussion of this at news.admin.net-abuse.email

The anti-spam section of the Code of Virginia is 18.2-152.3:1. \\"Transmission of unsolicited bulk electronic mail (spam); penalty\\"
Here's another thread at NANAE on the subject. There are several.

A reliable source says this is the spammer.

VA AG Kilgore's press release is at
http://www.oag.state.va.us/media%20center/...Spam_Arrest.htm

Spamhaus's website is http://www.spamhaus.com/ , but there's a DDOS - distributed denial of service - attack on it underway. Spammers do that all the time.

(later) Spamhaus is available again.

This is no time to gloat, not until Ralsky and Soloway are in jail. (obscure reference to wellknown spammers.)

The struggle goes on. I report spammers. Their websites go down. On to the next one.

And you're almost practically kind of almost putting a tiny little ding in the spam industry! Woohoo! wink

I kid. Like I said, I understand what you do. It's a noble thing, and I don't completely disagree with the use of RBLs. I hope you realize that the only thing I've ever disagreed with is SPEWS, and how they almost hold a gun to non-spam sites in order to make them complain to their hosts. It's extortion.

Also, I think you're taking yourself a tad bit too seriously.

I wonder what their motives are? can someone clarify?

Between my various email accounts this morning, I had a total of 65 emails. Only 4 of them were not spam! All of these were received since 6pm last night as that was when I last checked my email. Death to spammers indeed!

I use msn8 dsl, and I must say I have been quite impressed by the spam controls which allow you to stop almost any and all spam you receive. The things that bugs me more than spam are popups. Now those make me  .

The FTC just went after a bunch of pop-up spammers, specifically, D-Squared Solutions LLC.

FTC Obtains Order Barring Pop-up Spam Scam

D-Squared says they have a right to extort

Whenever you are spammed, do not JHD - "just hit delete." Forward spam to your ISP's abuse desk or report it to your system administrator.

Spam is theft. You can stop it.

Theft.

Other than among spammers, there's considerable lack of enthusiasm regarding the recently passed bill that will surely become federal law. Perhaps you didn't give as much to your representatives and senators as the Direct Marketing Association did.

Happy New Year for Spammers

Google toolbar includes a very efficient anti-pop-up thingy. I was getting about 10 an hour now I get virtually none. Best free download Ive done.
Joe in Philly
I mentioned the Google toolbar somewhere else here, and totally agree. It block the popups magnificently.

Since I got the cable modem and switched e-mail, and changed my settings so that when posting to newsgroups my e-mail address isn't displayed, I haven't gotten any spam. The only e-mails from companies are from those I actually deal with.

Another thing you can do is get a free e-mail address from sources like Yahoo or Hotmail, and use that if you surf the web and need an e-mail address to access something (like these sites that require registration) instead of using your regular e-mail.

Perp number two has turned himself in. Sorry, no video of him being frogmarched.

The precedent in these case needs to be hard prison time. The $2500 fine is meaningless.

Las Vegas spammer speaks:

The Spam King

QUOTE
Still stinging from his appearance at the FTC summit, Waggoner tells his listeners that his distaste for the anti-spammers who backed the bill almost rivals his aversion to left-wingers. \"Anti-spammers and liberals should get together and have a big tea party,\" he says into his microphone.

He lives in Vegas, has a ponytail, dates a stripper, and spams for a living. When the Revolution comes, he'll be strung by his balls and beaten like a pinata. What a low life!

Eeewwwwww.

I have the google toolbar and it's attendant features. I have Free Surfer mk II. I still get a pop-up that results in that "Domain Lander Page/Almighty Search" and a couple other pesky critters.

As for spam, I'm on a small, local cable ISP, so the only spam I get is in my yahoo email account. But then that's usually diverted to my bulk folder and easily deleted. I still resent getting all that garbage about Paris Hilton. I have almost no use for wimmen, least of all sexually.
Trevor
It's intersting to note that some time this weekend, my spam has all but vanished. Usually I i have 20-30 spam messages overnight. Tonight I had 3. 3!!!! While i don't like SPam, i can handle only seeing 3.

Trevor
JC
My e-mail program dumps nearly all spam into the bulk mail folder, and I really don't get that much of it anyway--maybe 1 or 2 a day. I'm far more irritated by the half-dozen phone solicitation calls and the endless stream of credit card offers in the snail mail.

My pop-up blocker also works well, but sometimes it seems to interfere with things I actually want to see. I'm on Southwestern Bell DSL, FYI.
gayhawk
JC, check the options of your blocker, you might be able to hold shift or ctrl while clicking on a link to keep it from being automatically shut down on ya.

If anyone uses Opera as a web browser, there's pop-up blocking built in (as well as a bajillion other features that make it innumerably better than IE, but I won't start up on that wink ) - just set it to "Open requested popups only" and you'll never get another popup that you didn't want to get ever again.

twin, I had no idea I had found the topic nearest and dearest to your heart. You must really HATE spam more than I do. Cheers!

Is it a coincidence that my spam has been reduced from sixty to sixteen this past week? Probably.

I keep hearing great comments about Opera, so I broke down and bought a copy as my Geek Christmas Present to Self, for which I also received a Free Opera 7 Gift Certificate. If you're a little geeky too, and would like a free copy of Opera 7 without banner ads, email or PM me and it's yours, first come, first served.

Symantec awarded judgment in counterfeit software case

Symantec awarded judgment in counterfeit software case

December 22, 2003

Cupertino-based Internet security firm Symantec Corp. on Monday announced that the United States District Court for the Central District of California Western Division has awarded it a $3 million judgment against Baltimore-based Maryland Internet Marketing for selling counterfeit Symantec software.

As part of a settlement of the case, Symantec says Maryland Internet Marketing CEO George Moore is personally required to pay $300,000 in damages to Symantec.
....
George Allen Moore Jr. used to spam me every day - several times a day, in fact. He made the mistake of annoying a computer tech at Johns Hopkins University, one Francis Uy.

Marketer Challenges Anti-Spam Crusader

QUOTE
By Jonathan Krim
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, April 7, 2003; Page E01

Every day, dozens of spam e-mails land in computer in-boxes advertising instant wealth, quick weight loss and cheap pornography.

Francis Uy, a self-described computer geek from Ellicott City, decided to fight back by employing a tactic increasingly used by a small cadre of e-mail users fed up with spam: Outing spammers by posting their addresses and phone numbers on the Internet, enabling network operators to block their e-mail or to sue them.

But Uy's target is counterattacking, resulting in a court date today in one of the more personal and unusual spam litigation cases to date. George Allen Moore Jr. of Linthicum argues that Uy's site is harassment and wants it pulled off the Internet.
....

Moore said he sells official versions of the software, and has never been contacted by Symantec.

\"If I was doing something wrong, I think I would have heard,\" Moore said.

So is this guy back? Since he was arrested I'd get less than a dozen spams a day, but this week I've been getting my usual 30+.

Anyone else seen a rise of spam in their inbox lately?
