Alright, I am taking a major chance here by asking for advice for naming my puppy that I will be getting in May. I will be getting a female miniature dachshund puppy that will probably be black and tan in color.
So here is what I am looking for/trying to avoid:
1) No girly-girl names (no Baby, Princess, etc.)
2) No direct human names- some nature or other names that sometimes used for homo sapiens acceptable
3)I want something that has some power or bite to it.
4) Creative, but not stupid- I don't want to be embarrassed when calling her.
So anyways, I am excited about getting my puppy, and have most everything I need but the perishables (treats, food). I just need some advice and help on choosing a name.
Hehehe- Maybe Cyd and Jim could donate a doggy-shirt with an Outsports logo- (you could sell these on your site and use a portion of the proceeds to animal charities)- anyways, it would be free publicity for the site when I go to the park or play tennis and she is there.

Kick,
Any name that you give the puppy will be GREAT, it will be a special name which you prived for this special animal!
Please dont worry, and just use what comes natural! It will turn out fine!
BEST OF LUCK!
Gald to hear you are hitting the courts.

Well, I could just name my little sunshine Miss Philly, as she is sure to be as positively wonderful and effervescent as yourself.
Thanks for the Kudos, sweet guy.
I am so happy to have you as an acquaintance in my life on this message board.
I can't wait until the next post you make, it simply gives me the giggles.
Or is it the gas?

I'm sure with some thought you're gonna get the perfect name!
Congrats to you again.

If she's black and tan, you might call her Harp or Guinness, or even Guiness Harp (the other way around doesn't really scan well). Though, Harpy wouldn't be a good nickname.
Kick, maybe you can get some ideas from here:
Next Day Pets Finding the right name for a pet is always fun. My partner and I (for some unknown reason) always pick a name beginning with
"B" for our animals, and they include Bartles, Bub, Beau-Bentley, and Benson! (All males!!)

My sister's girlfriend is a pet fanatic and she has similar criteria for naming her pets. Here are a couple of her's: China, Rainey, Hazel, Twila, and Miracle. She said she actually looks at liner notes from some of her favorite CD's (Dave Matthews for one) to find names for her pets.
Now although this would not be appropriate for your situation, I named my dog Javier Lopez Jr. I had to stake my claim to that man somehow! My Javy is a great dog.

How about:
Annabelle: A compound name including Anna, "grace" or "favor," and belle, "beautiful." Variants include Annabella and Annabelle.
Amelia/Amelie
Sophie
Bree (or Brianna)
Molly
or what about
Janay? When you set her down, she'll just stand there and look at you with frightened puppy eyes
Edit to add:
Whoops, sorry, I didn't read crieria #2! So forget my names..although I still like Annabelle. Belle/Bella for short. I like the poster who suggested Dachel...but that sounds like a boy dog's name. Since yyou're in Meeechigan how about Misha?
And Janay still works too

I'm not a fan of animals with people names. I think animals should have names like Nugget. Nugget is just a great name for a pet. It makes me laugh just saying it.
I have a friend who has two cats named Gaby and Steffi!

I've been told you should also consider keeping an animal's name short and simple--one or two syllables. Makes it easier for the pet to understand their own name and not confuse parts of it with other words (they have a limited vocabulary).

I was told many years ago that pets names should never be more than 2 syllables, as more than that will confuse them, and make it longer for them to learn their name.
All of my pets have had 2 syllable names, including the 2 labs I have now. The yellow lab, whose name is Goliath, is called Monster (I adopted him when he was 18 months old, and he was already named), and my chocolate lab, who I rescued last year, is named Denver. (my husband calls him a 100lb doorstop)
Whatever name you choose, should not be broken into parts, cute names used etc. The more names you call a dog, the less any of them will mean to the animal. If they have 1 name, use that one. Don't add honey, puppy, sweetie etc.
Remember, in the pet intelligence quotient, dogs have owners, and cats have staff.

My family had black and tan female mini Dachshunds when I was growing up, love those dogs. We were not creative, Heidi and Gretchen were their names.
What about Dachel? That is the actual german name for Dachshund.
Or Kugel? That translates as bullet.

don't do what my ex's upstairs neighbor did
he named his dogs George and Bailey--from it's a wonderful life
I like people names--I don't believe in Fluffy and cutsie names like that. It damages their self-esteem because the other dogs make fun of them
if you play tennis--pick out the names of your favorite German players. Boris is a good strong name.

Is she registered? If she is you could use something that goes with her parents names. When I have litters of puppies I try and pick themes to name the whole litter or use the parents names to come up with ideas
As an aside my dad actually had 2 dogs named Dawg and Cat. What can I say he's a little odd!!

The family has had some mini's. "Molly", "Bess", "Otto".
They have really bad breath(really) and an annoying bark. Only because they bark more than they need to and the room smells like their breath(septic).
You could name her after a wrapper from Detroit or a German auto, "Volks Wagging", "Beema", "Porschia". Some mini's have a tan bell marking on their bottoms.
I usually pick authors for pet names, Oliver, Wendell were cats that would lay down on your puzzle, book or scrabble board. Homer was a really great Samoyed that liked adventures.
Once she develops her personality, as Dachshunds do, you'll be calling her something else

When I was little, I had a friend who really wanted a puppy. He asked Santa for a puppy and sent numerous letters. Well, Christmas came, he opened the box with the air-holes and out popped a kitten.
He named it: Puppy
I vote for Cat.
p.s. My cats are Smacky and Cannibal Bob. They're girls.

We named our dog Champ because he was born on Superbowl Sunday when the Rams won. They were naming his litter mates after the Rams players at the time.
It should be a short name though. I like the idea about naming it from song lyrics. Why not your name Kick?

I am actually wondering if I should let the board name my puppy. I can pick my Top 5 favorite and then let you guys vote.
Some of the names I though of: Scout (from Scout Larue in To Kill a Mockingbird)- Raven (from Edgar Allan Poes tale)- Elphie (short for Elphaba- the nickname of the Wicked Witch of the West in Wicked)- Acey (tennis related)- Terra (meaning "earth"- since dachsies like to dig- and also because one of my favorite stories of all times is Bridge to Terrabithia) and Lara (for Lara Croft- adventurous woman or Lara-short for Laramie in Wyoming, which is self explanatory)
What are your thoughts?
Im thinking too much- I am done. You guys will name her.
I do like Schatzi- but one of my friends dogs breeder named his dog that...so I have to take that one from the list only for that reason.
Let's have fun!

I am liking the fun of taking some of the power out of my hands. It is either this or sell the chance on eBay LOL
When I think of the colors black and tan I also think of Jagermeister, but Jager is a boy's name.
I also think of candy bars, but Snickers is not a unique name, but I thought Skor might be a cool name, sorta sporty and sweet at the same time.
Also seems somewhat Germanic.
I am posting also to bring it back up to the top.
