Tuning in to a rerun of Match Game PM on the Game Show Network, which must have been taped around 1977-78, I was surprised when I noticed a current NFL head coach was a contestant. When host Gene Rayburn said "okay everyone let's meet Brian Billick" I said to myself "could it be?" And sure enough it was.
Billick introduced himself by saying he is out of pro football and looking to find work in a college or high school football program. He wore a very 1970-ish tan leather jacket. I never realized how big he is. He looked a little too big for that small Match Game set.
Unfortunately Brian Billick was not a clever Match Game player. He gave 3 rotten answers to his questions as not one panelist matched him. After giving his 3rd rotten answer, panelist Richard Dawson had some fun with Billick. He started writing a check list of Billick's career to this point. Dawson spoke as he wrote about Billick. "Football: failed, game shows: failed." Ironically it was Brian Billick, who went on to win a Super Bowl and become one of the best head coaches of today, to have the last laugh on Richard Dawson.
