Hey, a quick plea for help - I'm moving to SF this spring and will be looking for a place soon (this week, actually - I fly to San Francisco Thurs and come back to NYC on Sun)

If anyone has any suggestions re: realtors or brokers, or rental websites that don't charge or are not subscription based, please let me know.

You can zap me direct at byronpmccrae@yahoo.com if you don't mind (am I allowed to put an e-mail address in my message?)... THANKS!

Wattza matter wid ol' fashion'd shoe leatha?

Pick a nabe, have pen and pad, or handheld something or other, and walk around. Look at the many For Rent signs. They're not referring to Jeff Gannon.

You'll find lots of apartments available, okay, many are pricey, by SF standards, but they're available.

In my nabe, I saw at least five For Rent signs over this past weekend.

Yeah, there's tons of "For Rent" signs. Just go to your favorite neighborhood and walk around. The fun neighborhoods include upper Fillmore (or Pacific Heights), Noe Valley for the vicinity to the Castro, or Potrero Hill if you want something cheaper and you like the sun. Since you're coming from New York, I don't think you'll be shocked by the prices.

And you can always check out craigslist.org which has tons of free listings before you come out so you can set up some appointments given that you have such a small window of opportunity.

The San Francisco Chronicle, the main local paper, has rental listings for free too. While most people post on Craigslist, sometimes you get some traditionalist landlord who will list only in the local paper. The listings are viewable online at the paper's site, sfgate.com

Good luck!

There are lots of vacancies now. A friend moved a couple weeks ago, and it only took him a week to find his ideal apartment in the Mission.

My lease is up March 1st, and my landlord just offered my free rent for March if I sign another 12-month lease, and a $300 credit for April if I signed the lease by January 26th...which I did. I *was* thinking of moving to be closer to downtown, but this was simply too good a deal to pass up. Granted, I live in a 720-unit complex with alot of vacancies, and I doubt landlords of smaller complexes are giving out such good deals.

But this seems like a good time to be looking for a place to rent. Yeah, popular neighborhoods will still be pricey. But I imagine you'll find something good.

Like batboy said, www.craigslist.com is awesome. And once you get settled, you can use it to find activity partners, groups, jobs, a f**k buddy eek! and so much more. Craig's List seems to have put all those old rental agencies like Metro Rent, et al. out of business. The only problem with CL is that that is where everyone looks. So, even in this renter's market, if you pursue a great listing, be prepared to fight for it with many other prospective tenants.

I agree with MPetrelis. Take paper and a pen and your cell phone and walk around the neighborhood where you want to live. I think landlords in this city know they only have to put out a "For Rent" sign and they will get lots of bites.

Good luck and an early welcome to SF! The weather is supposed to be simply perfect when you're here later this week. You just missed the rain. biggrin.gif
